The MCC should be up to date tonight. I can say this with confidence since... I'm the one holding everything back. So round 2 of April will be up and March's final judgments will be in and a winner will be declared. Sorry all, stuff's been hectic.
April's Round 2 is now up. Apologies for the furthered delays. I'm afraid the last March judgments may have to wait another day, but I thought it was more important to keep April's contest moving.
Does the card have to explicitly include the "When you cycle..." clause or is having any effect that activates during cycling enough?
That templating is certainly the usual way to accomplish this so I'm not sure what you mean. You can ask after your submission's posted if you pass a subchallenge or not though.
I made a slight correction in my submission 2h past the deadline, I hope it's ok, but if not I can revert it.
No, substantive edits after judge assignments have been posted are not at all okay. I'm not going to disqualify you, but I will have to instruct you to revert your edit.
I can’t help but think that the “Mountain” was a Quality mistake for “Forest”, which would really change this whole card quite a lot, making it still very powerful but considerably more fair.
You are correct sir. This is a quality mistake for sure. The forestcycling ability was supposed to feed into its other ability. I goofed up and thought I had one more day to finalize my card. I was actually going to change it quite a bit. Oh well. I think missing the cut by 0.5 points is pretty decent considering I never actually finished my card.
Edit: I can't get my edits to show up. Please ignore the quality mistakes in this post.
Edit: Never mind, adding the first edit made the changes show up.

On account of my having to put up other contest threads April's round 4 is going to be delayed a little further. I'm sorry about this once again and I appreciate everyone's patience.
Just a typo in the round thread OP: this should say May in the title.

• "The Lion's Lair", my article series about MTG and custom card design in particular. Latest article here. Here is the article index.Rather outdated by now, and based on the old MCC rubric, but I'm leaving this here for anybody that might be interested anyway.
• My only public attempt at being a writer: the story of my Leonin custom planeswalker Jeff Lionheart. (I have a very big one that I'm working on right now but that's private for now, and I don't know if I will ever actually publish it, and I also have ideas for multiple future ones, including one where I'm going to reprise Jeff.)
Quick question. Is there a rule that determines when reminder text is needed for menace? It appears to go both ways on gatherer with no obvious methodology behind it.
Quick question. Is there a rule that determines when reminder text is needed for menace? It appears to go both ways on gatherer with no obvious methodology behind it.
Well honestly, I've never seen someone use reminder text for an evergreen keyword in the MCC.
Okay, thanks. I just wanted to confirm as someone could point to several cards on the gatherer that have the reminder text for menace and dock me for it, but there are several that don't too so I'd rather get clarification up front.
The psuedo-unblockable ability that Thorn Elemental has is pretty strictly green, so making it in green/red is a pretty large bend. uncommon is viable for that ability, but this could ALMOST be a common for power.
I'm not going to nitpick some of your other points, but while the Thorn Elemental ability is green, my card also has fire breathing, so of course it's going to be both green and red. That's the classic example of how multicolor cards work. I really don't understand your argument.
Also, I've noticed a general trend lately with judges scoring Uniqueness. There have been a lot of french vanilla cards getting full points or 2.5s simply on the fact that the combination of keywords "hasn't been done before". A big part of what uniqueness is supposed to be about is creativity and exploring design space. It doesn't make sense to give cards like that full points and the rubric was written to penalize french vanilla cards in this specific section. So let's work on that. I know several judges these days were not involved in writing or the edits to rubric, but the points you're supposed to consider are all there.
Yeah, while it's ultimately up to the judges to score contestants how they wish and their decisions are final, as organizer I see a consistency problem with one card that's multicolor and has abilities from two colors getting a 2.5 on viability (for a rarity issue), and another card that's the same structure, and that Algernone25 indicated had a rarity issue of a similar level, getting a 1.
Again, I'm not going to make Algernone change their score. That's not my place at all as either mod or organizer. Nor does getting points back mean that Icarii has to advance; it's still perfectly valid for Algernone to score their card lowest in the block. But, cards have to be judged to the same criteria.
The French vanilla thing is another matter. I don't think we should punish such cards if they're the best design for the challenge or if the challenge explicitly calls for something like that, but obviously they don't merit full uniqueness points. If enough people think the rubric needs rewriting - and there have been issues with it in the recent past - that's something we can all work on as a community.
Your point over multicolor is well-made, and I have retracted the half-point deduction related to it.
When doing the judging for Viability, I lean rather heavily on Scryfall for an historical perspective. Both Freyleyes and RaikouRider created 1/1s for CD at uncommon, which as I noted in my crits have some very powerful examples to lean on as reference. 1/4s for 4 at uncommon have much fewer reference points, and the ones that stand out (most notably Felidar Guardian and Karametra's Acolyte) have abilities that are very straightforward.
By power level the card rates as a common, by complexity of ability (Thorn elemental is uncommon/rare by precedent, this is markedly more complex than that) this rates as rare. That doesn't mean uncommon is correct - it would almost certainly be a rare if printed, and that's why the deduction was so much larger.

• The two public custom sets I've been part a part of the design team for:
"Brotherhood of Ormos" - Blog post with all info - set thread - design skeleton / card list || "Extinctia: Homo Evanuit" - Blog post with all info - set thread - card list spreadsheet
• "The Lion's Lair", my article series about MTG and custom card design in particular. Latest article here. Here is the article index. Rather outdated by now, and based on the old MCC rubric, but I'm leaving this here for anybody that might be interested anyway.
