Based on the scores, there will be eight contestants moving on to the Round 3 - the versus round - of April. With three judges, the pairings would be uneven, so I will randomly create two triples and one pairing with only the top scorer from each moving to the finals.
I can host the May MCC if no one else has already stepped forward. I have an idea already lined up, but it's a little out there, so I hope it goes over well. My idea has nothing to do with Dominaria though, so if people would prefer to have a Dominaria themed month, perhaps someone else would like to take May and I can do June? Let me know.
Edit: @ void_nothing.....My idea has nothing to do with the one I PMed you about a while back.

May round 1 is up. I'm a bit nervous. I'm starting to think I should have just gone with a more standard challenge. Hopefully people like to play a little "What if..." from time to time.

Korider, Trainer of the Many2WW
Legendary Creature - Human / Knight (Uncommon)
Whenever a creature without a class enters the battlefield under your control, put a +1/+1 counter on it and its class is Soldier.
2/2
No, this card does not pass the main challenge. The main challenge asks for a card that cares about race, but you card cares about class. It's a clever design though.

Just out of curiosity (doesn't impact any card design ideas I'm working on) why treat zombie/vampire as a class? (especially if you're not going to include Shades, Skeletons, Specters, Spirits, Thrulls, or Wraiths) I could see starting to define what kind of zombie/vampire, but this seems like more of a dual race than a race/class relationship.

Zombie and Vampire are race types, when they stand alone, but also "status" types, when put with another race type. What that means is hard to define but it's like an adverb in a sense - it modifies the other type.

For the sake of this month's challenges, Zombie and Vampire will both be considered creature classes.
hence my question.
Well it does come down to the organizer's discretion but I would highly advise that they be put as race types - clearly Sengir Vampire's race type is Vampire and Scathe Zombies's is Zombie, for example.
Oh man. I'm sorry my attempt at clarification just caused more confusion. I typoed my clarification. I meant to say that Vampire and Zombie should be treated as races, not classes. I'll fix that now.
As long as I'm here....I realize that cards that only have one type listed could cause some confusion in my hypothetical NWO for creature types (I'm looking at you tokens), but I think if Wizards were ever to do what I'm suggesting, they could potentially handle the issue by creating an official list of MTG races, and an official list of MTG classes. This sounds like a lot of potential for confusion, but IMO, race and class are pretty intuitive for the most part. Cardz5000 does a good job of listing many of the creature types that might cause confusion (Skeleton, Wraith, Spirit, Beast, etc), but to me, it is pretty clear that all of those would be considered races. Mirri the Cursed is a good example of the kind of card that might cause confusion. It has two creature types that I would consider a race, but it has no class. Again, I think it's fairly intuitive that both of the creature types on Mirri would be considered races, but any argument about it could easily be settled by an official list.
I realize that it is highly unlikely that Wizards would actually adopt the change I'm suggesting, mostly because it has the potential to cause unnecessary confusion in what is an already confusing game, but there are times when I wish Wizards would give people more credit. Also, I think it's fun to play the "what if" game from time to time. Hopefully I'm not the only one.

I personally don't find that list confusing, I was just saying that if vampires were a class that the others should be (I feel those all make sold sense as races, not classes)
Good to see it was a typo and not weird "if it would be an acquired template in DnD than it's a class" logic
Clarificaton needed, please: Do creature cards need to have a race and a class to satisfy the main challenge?
No, a single creature type is ok. If the creature does have a race and a class, it should be formatted as I laid out in the thread.
As long as we're on the subject of my unique formatting requirement, I'd like to advise the judges to judge the unique formatting requirement in the quality section of the rubric. As it would be if it were real formatting. I know I have the formatting requirement as part of the main challenge, but I certainly don't wan't to see anyone disqualified for making a mistake on a made up card format.

Congrats IcariiFA
Definitely had the most straightforward approach to the challenge, which tends to pay off with multiple judgings as long as it isn't boring.
I liked Hemlock's Quirion Dryad instinct but the C had a hard time fitting in. I wonder if it could have gone along with the rest of the mana symbols somehow, allowing for totally different trinket text?
I had two other ideas, one being a Crystal Quarry variant something like this: Hall of Incarnation
Land (R) T: Add C. 4, T: Add WUBRG. Spend this mana only to cast Avatar spells. (trinket text?) 4, T: Create a 1/1 white Cleric token with "T: Target Avatar creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn."
And the other one I really wanted to create the guy pictured in the back of Ersatz Gnomes and give it a Celestial Dawn effect washing into colorless, but sadly the templating on those effects says "white mana" instead of "W" for some reason so I couldn't figure out how to fit it. Would have made Gnome tokens that had some trinket text.
I really liked the paradigm of the three mana pairings but I could have probably pushed it into something more interesting.
That's weird, I fixed the Celestial Dawn tag and it still isn't showing up right for me in the last post.
IIRC I was going to make it a weird 5-color colorless commander.
Graycloak, Ersatz Master4C
Legendary Creature - Human Wizard (R)
Gnome spells and permanents you control are colorless. (so we can bring Quarum Trench Gnomes into the fold)
You may spend colorless mana as though it were mana of any color to cast colorless or artifact spells or activate abilities or colorless or artifact permanents. (was thinking for a minute I could do "you may spend C instead of W, U, B, R or G...")
2/7
And uhhh...Gnome creatures you control have "T: Put a +1/+1 counter on another target Gnome."? I guess I could have done it as is and given him a WUBRG ability to make a bunch of gnomes or something.
So the round 1 entry period for May ends tonight and we currently only have 14 entries, one of which is netn10's, which I've already told him does not meet the main challenge. That said, I'm afraid I have the opposite problem that the MCC generally has these days - I think I have too many judges. Conversely, I think I have a problem new to the MCC - not enough players. Generally 12 people advance to round 2, correct? That only leaves 2 people to eliminate. Any suggestions on how to handle these issues would be greatly appreciated.
On a similar topic, there are several cards that currently care about creature type in general, but not race specifically (as the challenge asks for). Although I feel like these cards should fail the main challenge, I realize that I made the main challenge a bit too ambiguous on this front, so I am recommending that the judges pass these cards, but reduce the main challenge score for not following the spirit of the challenge. While caring about creature type is technically caring about race type, I think it is clear enough that I was asking for the card to care specifically about race. Otherwise, why bother with separating race from class in the first place?

Seems ok to me to drop one per judge so 14 -> 10 and then 10 -> 6, then we get double judgings and advance half of those 6 to the final?
So randomly assigned pods of 3 or 4 per judge this round.

My advice is to tell whomever was the last judge to sign up that they have the month off this time.

Good to see it was a typo and not weird "if it would be an acquired template in DnD than it's a class" logic

I had two other ideas, one being a Crystal Quarry variant something like this:
Hall of Incarnation
Land (R)
T: Add C.
4, T: Add WUBRG. Spend this mana only to cast Avatar spells. (trinket text?)
4, T: Create a 1/1 white Cleric token with "T: Target Avatar creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn."

IIRC I was going to make it a weird 5-color colorless commander.
Graycloak, Ersatz Master 4C
So randomly assigned pods of 3 or 4 per judge this round.
My advice is to tell whomever was the last judge to sign up that they have the month off this time.
