What? No, my analogy had nothing to do with getting along with people, who needs that (jk :))). By "audience pleaser" I pretty much define a designer's ability to design cards that the average judge will like on first read-through (before he even begins going through the rubric) and not consider to be "off" in ways he can't put his or her finger on.
Ah, I see. Then I find it strange that you suggest my ability on that front is so low. I think I often design cards that both highly grokable and have a lot of appeal to judges with cool effects. Not everything I submit in these contest are cards I'm super stoked/proud of, but there are certainly some stand outs.
(3/3) Quality: Yeah yeah you're not ever losing points in this are you.
I like how it's become a trend to joke about how I rarely lose points for quality!
Thanks for another fun month, y'all. Tribal months can be difficult to make the most compelling, but it still was a good time. That brings me up to 4 MCC wins this year! Woot.
I'm almost settled into my new place now (moving to a new city and starting over is hard) but I should be a bit more talkitive going forward.
No, do not worry, my brain is always that same bad old one... it was something else entirely. Anyway, my healing is proceeding, although very slowly. I think I'll try to judge if the "no judges" emergency continues. If somebody comes up at the last moment wanting to judge I'll be more than happy to give up my spot if it comes to that. I don't think I would post an entry anyway.

The DCC is in a crisis situation right now with only two judges, one of whom is technically reserve and who is still recovering from surgery. If there's not a third judge by tonight I'm going to have to make a really drastic decision.
Don't do that.
I can drop my design and become a judge this month though I don't like this situation at all.
Starting from the next month, we should choose hoster AND judge team and the contest shouldn't start without them. Agreed?
But can you please add ohe more day to the judging deadline due to recent circumstances?
Yes, of course - I think Leo and I may need it too.
Yes, I'd definitely appreciate that too.

Invoking my privilege as organizer, I'm gonna extend the deadline another 12 hours or so - I'm just too exhausted to judge tonight and I'll do it in the morning.
Hey so I really want to follow up on some comments made in the adjudication of my card and at least discuss them broadly to get thoughts so that I don't make the same mistake again/ensure that these things were correctly understood. Given how close my bracket was, any one of these critiques being given in error would have pushed me into advancing in the next round, so I did just want to have the discussion.
Flavor
While I personally have no big problems with it, we know that guns are best avoided in official Magic. That doesn't mean there is no place for them in the game, there is some precedent and some guns might be in Unstable, but if the purpose of the contest is to make realistically printable cards, I feel there might be some problems with this card. If the purpose is to make un-cards or cards for custom sets, it could be fine. Except for this, I have no problems with the name in a vacuum or with the absence of flavor text (no room for it).
To be clear on where this design came from, it was designed as a card in my Piracy set, and was intended to be more historically representative of a pistol/gun that could only shoot a few times without being reloaded. I do understand that Wizards has tended to avoid guns in their cards, however, it strikes me that in the right context of a set, anything like drinking (e.g. Sleeping Potion), sex (e.g. Alluring Siren), etc. can all be done. Additionally, I am not clear on what is distinct between a gun and a sword and a gun or a cannon - both of which were featured in Ixalan. I definitely understand guns have a squeamishness about them, especially in light of recent tragic events in the US, and I am one of the biggest gun control people out there, but I also am concerned that this deduction of 1.5 points was a pretty dramatic hit. It seems to me that given that Magic is a 13+ game, and that as long as the card isn't using guns in a grievous way, I don't really see an issue between it and something like Pirate's Cutlass. I only ask for a distinction to be made here that isn't rooted in "guns are bad."
Formatting
"Whenever you equip" is not standard template. Auras and Equipment "become attached" to creatures, so this should be "Whenever Flintlock Pistol becomes attached to a creature, put two charge counters on Flintlock Pistol." (-0.5).
This was intentional. Lots of cards in my set had "attach" effects (e.g. Balan, Wandering Knight), so I had phrased it as such in order to correct for those types of effects. This would normally be something in the design notes, so I am less upset about this than I am about the flavor, I had just wanted to offer my rationale here and ask for future contests how one might try and do something a little bit less than normal without being docked for it.
Anyway, to be clear, I am not mad or upset. I am disappointed in the flavor side of my card being docked "on principle" that a multibillion dollar company is too scared of its image to print cards with firearms on them, particularly since forum cards do stuff like this all the time when we don't have shareholders to answer to. (See all the Star Wars sets out there) I hope Wizards loosens this standard a bit in the future, because it does strike me as incredibly inconsistent, but se la vie I suppose.
The dark irony of the name “Master of Mercy” for a mercy killer is appreciated. All in all this reminds me of a niche version of the infamous Goblin Sharpshooter. The fight trigger makes it seem more unique and legendary - were you thinking of Konjin when you made this card? Love the flavor text. Maybe I would have made this an Assassin rather than a Rogue just for the unique and cool factors. 23.5/25.
Wow, virtual second place in my bracket. Not bad, not bad at all.
Yes, this guy is from Konjin where fighting is a thing for nongreen cards and the names are Japanese.
I thought about Assassin creature type, but dropped it because some conservative judges may reduce the points for a red Assassin (there are only two known monored Assassins in the game and both of them are Goblins).
Is there anyone interested in running November's MCC?
The CCC mods want to encourage anyone to step up; in addition, if you're available to judge, please let us know here in the discussion thread so you can be confirmed on an informal basis before the month starts.
Ah, I see. Then I find it strange that you suggest my ability on that front is so low. I think I often design cards that both highly grokable and have a lot of appeal to judges with cool effects. • The two public custom sets I've been part a part of the design team for:
"Brotherhood of Ormos" - Blog post with all info - set thread - design skeleton / card list || "Extinctia: Homo Evanuit" - Blog post with all info - set thread - card list spreadsheet
• "The Lion's Lair", my article series about MTG and custom card design in particular. Latest article here. Here is the article index. Rather outdated by now, and based on the old MCC rubric, but I'm leaving this here for anybody that might be interested anyway.
• My only public attempt at being a writer: the story of my Leonin custom planeswalker Jeff Lionheart. (I have a very big one that I'm working on right now but that's private for now, and I don't know if I will ever actually publish it, and I also have ideas for multiple future ones, including one where I'm going to reprise Jeff.)
PS. Wow, 10.000 posts.

Flavor
Formatting
No problem.

And I thought I was nitpicky about templating!
Also congrats on the mod void_nothing, you were a great choice.
The CCC mods want to encourage anyone to step up; in addition, if you're available to judge, please let us know here in the discussion thread so you can be confirmed on an informal basis before the month starts.
