It's eight AM in the morning, and I personally don't have the critical thinking skills for judging at that time of day. Not sure about Cythare. I also never noticed Cythare lives in Boston. That's cool.
As luck would have it, I got coffee on my way to the office today, so critical thinking skills are at ~85% of peak capacity. Judging is commencing now complete. Apparently DFC were not that popular. Alas.
First, the criteria! The first criterion, as noted before, is that one side is Lorwyn, the other Shadowmoor. Since these are the plane's "day" and "night", and that's what the sides of the card are referred to, your card hopefully reflects this.
The second: On Lorwyn/Shadowmoor (as on many other worlds), day and night are a cycle, and now that Oona's been dethroned, we don't have to wait 100 years (sorry Rosheen Meanderer). Bonus points if your card flips both directions.
Rosheen Meanderer3(R/G)
Legendary Creature — Giant Shaman (R)
At the beginning of each one hundred years, transform Rosheen Meanderer. T: Add 4 to your mana pool. Spend this mana only on costs that contain X. Night after night, Rosheen babbled about a bygone sunlit world, her every word dismissed as a madwoman's ravings.
4/4
//
Rosheen Meanderer3(R/G)
Legendary Creature — Giant Shaman (R)
At the beginning of each one hundred years, transform Rosheen Meanderer. T: Add 4 to your mana pool. Spend this mana only on costs that contain X. Night after night, Rosheen babbled about a bygone moonlit world, her every word dismissed as a madwoman's ravings.
4/4
IIW: Flavour first.
While I do enjoy this, you'll run out of time in the round long before you can flip her. At least you meet one of the bonus criteria (pretty sure Rosheen would be (R/W) during the day)?
Cruel Cavaliers 1BG
Creature - Elf Knight {R}
Intimidate
Whenever ~ attacks, defending player sacrifices a creature. At end of turn, if that player controls fewer creatures than you, untap and transform ~. 3/2
//
Just Cavaliers
((G/W)) Creature - Elf Knight {R} Vigilance
Whenever ~ blocks, prevent all combat damage target attacking creature would deal this turn. At end of turn, if the controller of that creature controls more creatures than you, transform ~.
2/3
I really like the dichotomy here. Both sides mechanically capture the color combination, flavorfully capture the elf tribe on Lorwyn and Shadowmoor, and are at the appropriate cost & rarity. Also, bonus points.
Sharing BoggartR
Creature - Goblin (U) B, T, Pay 2 life: Each other player loses 1 life.
At the end of your turn, if you have less life than each of your opponents, transform Sharing Boggart. Then it came to Blokk. A way to share pain his with others. [1/1]
// Rampaging Boggart R Creature - Goblin
Whenever Rampaging Boggart deals combat damage to an opponent, you may pay G. If you do, destroy target artifact that player controls and you gain 2 life.
At the end of each turn, if you have more life than each of your opponents, transform Rampaging Boggart. Blokk liked metal. He thought it was crunchy. [4/4]
IIW: A challenge goes here...
This guy is pretty interesting. It also captures the boggart flavor pretty accurately for both sides of the plane. Given that it's a 1-drop though, I'm not sure how I feel about the transform trigger. I guess a 4/4 on turn 3 that will switch back to a 1/1 isn't overpowered, though, and I like the way its activated and triggered abilities interact with its transform trigger. Bonus points for you too.
Meadow's Creeper(2/B)(2/B)(2/G)(2/G)
Artifact Creature — Scarecrow (R)
Trample
Whenever Meadow's Creeper is dealt damage, put that many -1/-1 counters on it instead.
At the beginning of your upkeep, if Meadow's Creeper has -1/-1 counter on it, transform Meadow's Creeper.
6/6
//
Torment of Ashes
Artifact Creature — Horror (R)
Wither
Remove a -1/-1 counter from torment of Ashes: Torment of Ashes deals 1 damage to each other creature.
Whenever another creature dies, Transform Torment of Ashes.
6/6
IIW: Negative toughness
Your day side could use a little tweaking. The first ability should say "If ~ would be dealt damage...". This guy is pretty beastly. The back side having wither and a Pyroclasm effect is a little too much for me, even at rare.
swishh, I didn't judge your card, because it looked like you didn't like it. If you want feedback, let me know.
Flamekin Flayer3R
Creature - Elemental Warrior (U) 2R: Elemental creatures you control get +1/+0 until end of turn. If this is the third time this ability has resolved this turn, transform ~. When consumed by the heat of battle, Flamekin warriors have a tendency to burn out quickly.
2/2
//////////////////// Cinder Slasher (B/R) Elemental Warrior (U)
Red creatures you control have first strike.
Black creatures you control have wither. Devoid of the passion that once fueled them, Cinders are full of nothing but cruelty and wickedness.
2/2
IIW: Allies
This guy looked really strong at first, until I realized he flips one way, making for one expensive blowout turn, instead of several. 2R seems reasonable for a team pump, and the mileage you get out of +3/+0, first strike and wither at 9 mana seems reasonable. The fact that the back side is basically Bloodmark Mentor plus Corrosive Mentor is a little less exciting, but it fits mechanically with the front side and with the (B/R) color combo on Shadowmoor.
Dawn Caller1W
Creature - Kithkin Cleric U
Whenever you untap a plains, gain one life.
Whenever you have B in your mana pool,
transform Dawn Caller.
1/2
///
Dusk Gwyllion
(B) Creature - Kithkin Hag
Creatures you control have Wither.
Whenever you have W in your mana pool,
transform Dusk Hag.
2/1
IIWL Narrow but 0
First off, Kithkin aren't hags, but that's fine. This guy's transform trigger seems like it would be a pain, especially with lands that can produce multiple colors, because it forces you/your opponent to clarify what colors of mana you're making, which can be time consuming. It's also a super easy transform trigger to work around. Tap a Swamp during combat to flip it, then tap a Plains at the end of your opponent's turn to flip it back to gain life. Barring needing all of your mana, this guy is basically whichever side you want whenever you want it, which would be rough for Limited at uncommon.
Merrow FartraderWU
Creature-Merrow Wizard (U)
Whenever Merrow Fartrader deals damage to a player, gain 2 life. If that player controls 2 or more non-merfolk creatures, transform Merrow Fartrader.
UW:Merrow Fartrader gains islandwalk and vigilance until end of turn. When the aurora hit, he found himself surrounded by bodies...all bearing the marks of fish teeth...
2/2
//////////////////////////// Merrow Farhunter (U/B)Creature-Merrow Rogue
Whenever Merrow Farhunter deals damage to a player, that player sacrifices a creature. Then, if that player doesn't control a non-merfolk creature, transform Merrow Farhunter.
UB:Merrow Farhunter gains wither and hexproof until end of turn. When the aurora hit, he found himself surrounded by traders from the other races, and he was filled with hateful envy of the trinkets he'd just traded to them...
4/3
IIW: Looters!
Merrow isn't a creature type. These should be Merfolk. While this may look like nitpicking, Lorwyn is a tribal world! This guy also has a little too much going on. His day side can grant vigilance and islandwalk, ensuring that it connects in the mirror match. The night side then can gain hexproof? The power level on this card seems much too high, especially for 2 mana.
Guardian of the Meek4WR Creature - Giant Cleric (R)
Vigilance 1WR,T: Until end of turn, prevent all damage that would be dealt to target creature this turn. If it would deal damage to a creature or player this turn, it deals twice that much damage instead. R: Transform Guardian of the Meek.
3/6
----- Roughtumble Brawler (:symrg:) Creature - Giant Warrior
Trample 1RG,Q: Target creature you control fights another target creature you don't control. R: Transform Roughtumble Brawler.
6/3
iiwsig
The amount of stuff options here is dizzying. In Limited, he can basically end games when he hits, since the back side has trample. You attack with him, tap him with his ability, transform him, and he connects for (up to) 12. If a pesky blocker gets in the way, fight it (it'll deal 12 damage to it, and won't take any), to maximize the chances of the full 12 to the dome. I also think this transform trigger is far too permissive, considering how strongly the two sides interact.
Thoughtweft Enforcers2GW
Creature - Kithkin Soldier (U)
Hexproof
Whenever a creature you control deals damage to an opponent, put a +1/+1 on that creature.
At the beginning of your upkeep, if there are two or more +1/+1 counters on Thoughtweft Enforcers, transform it.
3/3
//////////////
Thoughtweft Hoarders
(:symwu:) Creature - Kithkin Rogue
Hexproof, vigilance T: Move all +1/+1 counters from target creature to Thoughtweft Hoarders.
4/4
IIW: Make a creature card based on a character from a popular fictional story.
I'll just get it out there - I don't like hexproof. Having it on one side is fine, but both sides is rough, especially since the back side is Spike Rogue on a stick. I like the interaction between all the other abilities, and honestly, if the front side didn't have hexproof (having it on the back is fine, since you have to work up to it), this card would be awesome, but the amount of stuff going on here with minimal interactive opportunites (especially at uncommon) is a bit too much. Also, +1/+1 counter stealing is not (W/U), mechanically or thematically, unless you restrict it to creatures you control.
Trapmaster Fae2UU
Creature - Faerie Rogue(R)
Flying, Flash
Kinship - At the beginning of your upkeep, you may look at the top card of your library. If it shares a creature type with Trapmaster Fae, you may reveal it. If you do, Transform Trapmaster Fae.
1/3
// Deathmaster Fae
Creature - Faerie Assassin
Persist, Deathtouch, Flying
When this creature transforms into Deathmaster Fae, Put a +1/+1 counter on each creatures you control and a -1/-1 counter on each creature your opponent controls.
1/3
IIW - What Magic: the Gathering means to you.
I like the Delver of Secrets-esque front side trigger (I know kinship did it first), and the back side is interesting. I'm not sure how I feel about the persist mixed with the trigger, since it has an internal combo there, but I assume this was intended. Internally referencing two types of counters on the same card is usually a no-no. The transform trigger one by itself is fine, but with the persist, it becomes a mess of counters. I guess technically it meets the day/night cycle criteria too, because of the persist/+1/+1 counter recursion loophole.
Blazing Vanguard1RR Creature - Elemental Warrior (U)
Haste
When another elemental creature you control dies, transform Blazing Flamekin. He fights for the Flamekin, reveling in their victories.
3/2
Smoldering Vengeant (B/R)Creature - Elemental Warrior (U)
Intimidate
Whenever Smoldering Vengeant attacks it gets +1/+0 for each red or black creature in your graveyard. He avenges the cinders, loathing in their shortcomings.
2/1
IIW: Big fat fatties
First off, I have to give you props for tuning the back side by making it smaller to offset it's abilities. It doesn't meet the secret criteria, but otherwise, I see nothing wrong with it. I would love to see this card printed, and it makes sense both flavorfully and mechanically. Well done.
Meadowgrain Strategist2WW
Creature - Kithkin Advisor {R}
Kithkin creatures you control have lifelink.
At end of turn, if a Kithkin creature you controlled died this turn, flip Meadowgrain Strategist.
2/3
/// Mistmeadow Guerrilla
Creature - Kithkin Advisor {White}
Whenever a white creature you control attacks, you may gain 1 life.
At end of turn, if a Kithkin creature entered the battlefield under your control this turn, flip Mistmeadow Guerrilla.
3/2
IIW: A card that tells a tragic story.
I like this guy. The two ways of gaining life are stepping on each others' toes a bit, but that's okay. The transform triggers are nice. I'm not sure why the Guerrilla is an Advisor, though.
Liru, the Nightingale 1B
Legendary Creature - Faerie Rogue R
Lifelink, Flying
Discard a card, pay 2 life: Target opponent reveals his or her hand. You choose a nonland card, that player discards that card.
At the beginning of your upkeep, if you have 10 or more life, transform Liru, the Nightingale The greatest thieves are the best at not caring
2/1
//////
Liru's Apathy
(B) Legendary Tribal Enchantment - Faerie R
At the beginning of your upkeep you lose 1 life and put a 1/1 black faerie rogue token with flying into play, then if you have 10 or less life, transform Her sense of irony is legendary
IIW: Incarnations
I was going to start by noting the issue with DFC and the legendary supertype, but the transform trigger here makes it nigh impossible to stick two copies for any longer than one turn cycle, since the triggers is state-based instead of action-based. It seems a bit strong for a 2 mana legendary creature, but Bitterblossom costs 2 and isn't legendary. The only real issue I see here is that her Duress effect should probably be limited to sorcery speed.
Your winner is: AsianInvasion! I love the triggers on both sides, as well as the captured flavor of the tribe on each version of the plane.
Creation Coil7
