Aven are worshipped by the populace as a ruling class, but even the Aven are slaves to some unknown force on the plane. The scarce resources and strife are constant, except along the river of Ankhmar, which houses thriving cities and lush jungles. People look to the desert with a sense of wonder, but also of dread as a scourge of warlike Naga conduct hit and run raids of the river-cities for sacrifices to appease an unknown entity.
