Smarlnos of Little Temper :3mana::symr::symr:
Legendary Creature- Troll
At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice two creatures.
At the end of your turn, you may search your library for a red creature and put it into play. Then shuffle your library.
3/3 To keep him fighting for their cause, the goblins had to bribe him with fresh blood.
Balance: 7
Putting a red creature from your deck into play is strong, but having to sac two creatures during your upkeep is a huge setback. Of course you can fetch out things like Goblin Marshal to help, but by-and-large, this card just doesn't wow me.
Flavour: 7
The flavour text helps tie "of Little Temper" to the upkeep sac ability, but otherwise I'm not sure I would have made the connection. I'm not sure the tutoring ability fits with the name either. On the plus side, I really like "of Little Temper" as a title; great card name.
Total: 14/20
Other notes: What I think would have made this more interesting is if you only had to sac one creature during your upkeep and the creature you grabbed had haste and had to be sacked at EOT. It's kind of old-hat for red, but I think I might have gotten the "of Little Temper" flavour better that way.
Ytre of the Yellow-Brick :2mana::symg::symw:
Legendary Creature - Human Druid Shaman
Ytre of the Yellow-Brick gets +1/+1 for each legendary permanent you control. Grandeur - Discard another card named Ytre of the Yellow-Brick: Search your library for a legendary permanent card and put it into your hand. Rejuvenate - Discard a land card: Return a card named Ytre of the Yellow-Brick from your graveyard to your hand.
1/1
Balance: 7
I can sort of see how this could be an engine card, but most of the time I think I'd rather use Captain Sisay. This guy can get pretty big, which is about the only thing he does that Sisay doesn't do better.
Flavour: 6
If I didn't know that there is a famous fictional road made out of yellow bricks, and if I didn't presume that Ytre was of this Yellow-Brick because he was leading these legends down said road, the flavour of this card wouldn't make much sense to me at all.
Total: 13/20
Neresa Swile, the Sunquencher
:1mana::symu::symu:
Legendary Creature--Human Wizard
2/1
Whenever an opponent plays a red spell, you may search your library for a blue card with the same mana cost except replacing all red mana symbols with blue ones, play it without paying its mana cost, then shuffle your library. (For example, if a spell costing :1mana::symr::symr: is played, search for a card with mana cost :1mana::symu::symu:. If :symu::symr:, :symu::symu:. If :1mana::symgr:, . If :symur:, :symu:.) <incoherent rage> --Jaya Ballard, Task Mage
Balance: 8
The card is about as narrow as it can be, but it's a fairly powerful effect if you can get it to work. It's the kind of card you'd have to build around, and even then, if your opponent isn't playing red, it's an overcosted weenie. Potentially awesome sideboard material, though.
Flavour: 10
I totally get the Sunquencher bit: Whenever red mana rears its ugly head, you find the same amount of blue mana to balance it. Very well done in this respect.
Total: 18/20. Very nice card overall.
Other notes: I only realized when judging that you can tutor for any blue card, not just instants. Possibly my favourite part of the card, though, is its lack of interaction with Painter's Servant; if your opponent plays Harmonize, you get to search your deck for a blue spell with a mana cost of 2GG. Good luck with that.
The Awakened 3WWUUU
Legendary Creature-Avatar
Lifelink, Flying
WUUUU: Search your for ~ and put it into play, then each opponent may search their library for a legendary creature with CMC less than ~'s and put it into play. Play this ability only if ~ is in your library.
5/5 It powers is such that it seeks out adversaries to test itself.
Balance: 6
That's a steep, steep cost for a 5/5 flyer with lifelink, even if you pay the WUUUU to get it from your deck.
Flavour: 6
I suppose it's The Awakened because you get it right from your deck? Not terribly evocative either way.
Total: 12/20
Other notes: I'm pretty sure its search ability wouldn't work with the rules, since you can't pay costs or play spells or abilities from hidden zones, which is what your library is. It'd also create rules headaches. What happens when you pay the WUUUU to search your library only to find the only copy in your deck is already in another zone?
Caos :symr::symr::symr::symr::symr:

Haste
:symr::symr:, : Shuffle all permanents in play, hands, graveyards, and cards removed from the game into their owners' libraries. Each player searches their library for 7 cards at random and puts them into play. If an instant or sorcery is selected this way, that player may play it without paying for its mana cost. At the end of turn, all sorceries and instants that were not played this turn are put into the graveyard. 6/4
Balance: 5
Five red mana for a 6/4 with haste and a mediocre ability? I'm not even sure how you would go about trying to abuse the tap ability, aside from having your deck chock-full of all that is red and fat.
Flavour: 7
I imagine this causing less chaos and more table-turning swinginess. The flavour is still sort of there, though.
Total: 12/20
Other notes: I'm not sure how one would search his or her library for seven random cards. I think it'd probably say to just reveal the top seven cards. The ability feels like it's worded the way it is just to meet my challenge criteria, which isn't very cool.
Jasi of Fervent Loyalty :2mana::symw::symw:
Legendary Creature - Human Soldier
When ~ comes into play, search your library for a planeswalker card and remove it from the game. Then shuffle your library.
At the beginning of your upkeep, put a loyalty counter on ~.
When there are four or more loyalty counters on ~ it becomes a copy of a card removed from the game with ~ except that its name is still Jasi of Fervent Loyalty and its subtype is Jasi. "Usually a Planeswalker's spark can only be ignited by extreme mental or physical stress, but in his case it was his intense feelings of loyalty towards me which triggered the Awakening." - Ajani Goldmane
2/2
Balance: 8
It's kind of slow, but being able to have two of the same planeswalker in play is probably well worth the wait. Nicely done.
Flavour: 9
Jasi becomes much like his master, and, well, planeswalkers use loyalty counters; thus, the Loyalty in his name makes sense. The Fervent isn't quite so clear, though.
Total: 17/20. Good stuff.
Thomos, Elder Librarian :symu::symu::symu:
Legendary Creature - Human Wizard
:2mana::symu:,:symtap:: Search your library for a card with the same converted mana cost as the last card played by an opponent this turn.
0/2 "He may not remember as much as he once knew, but he can give great references." - Librox, Researcher
Balance: 7
Another interesting yet narrow ability. It could work in fun ways, but you'd have to watch out for your opponent playing another spell in response to you playing this ability. That could totally throw off your game. Also, what do you do with the card once you search for it? Put it into your hand? Play it? Play it for free? This piece of info is critical to its power level, but it's missing.
Flavour: 8
The flavour text helps tie in the Elder bit, and being able to get new cards is usually enough to fit the Library descriptor. Works for me.
Total: 15/20
Giril, the Giver :2mana::symu::symu:
Legendary Creature - Human Wizard

:symu::symu:, , Discard a card: Return ~ to its owner's hand.
1/2
Balance: 9
It's slow and costly, but could potentially be an incredible engine all on its own. It's similar enough to Gifts Ungiven that I'd be worried about this seeing print, but I think it's slow enough and blue-mana-intensive enough to not dominate everything everywhere. Nicely done.
Flavour: 8
I realize it's an homage to Gifts, but that's really where the flavour ends. It works, but the flavour doesn't run deep.
Total: 17/20. Very cool card.
Tamble, the Gambler :1mana::symr:
Legendary Creature - Goblin Shaman
Whenever you draw a card you may pay :symr::symr:. If you do, search your library for a card, put that card into your hand, then discard a card at random. Then shuffle your library.
1/2
Balance: 10
It seems strong, but Gamble hasn't broken any formats in half. The fact that this is repeatable and triggers on any card draw could be problematic, but overall I think this is the best balanced submission I've recieved.
Flavour: 7
The ability is exactly like the card it's named after. so while the flavour fits, it's nothing new.
Total: 17/20. Great design.
Haru, Spirit of Spring :2mana::symg::symg::symg:
Legendary Creaturea - Spirit Avatar
At the beginning of your upkeep, discard a land card or sacrifice ~.
At the beginning of your draw step, you may search your library for a creature card and put it into play.
2/3
Balance: 7
Seems reasonable enough. It's an unrestricted and potentially unlimited Natural Order, but the upkeep is hopefully enough to keep it in check. The balance here isn't higher because I think it might not be enough.
Flavour: 6
I sort of get the spring and rebirth thing, but it's not really there. I suspect "Spring" is in the name simply because the creature's green.
Total: 13/20
Biggs, Goblin Landscaper :2mana::symr:
Legendary Creature - Goblin Advisor
When Biggs, Goblin Landscaper comes into play search your library for a land card, put it into play under target player's control. Then shuffle your library. That player then sacrifices another land.
"Those trees just won't do, they are too green and tree-like. Ofcourse the final decision is up to you, but you really must have a swamp."
2/2
Balance: 8
If you could choose which land the targeted player sacrificed, this little guy would be in a whole new league. As is, I don't think the ability really does enough to be noteworthy--wait, hold on. I just realized that you can fail to find a land in your deck and your opponent will still need to sac a land. It's almost like Stone Rain with feet. Potentially ugly in multiples; thank goodness it's legendary.
Flavour: 9
This is definitely in line with what a goblin landscaper might do. Personally, I would have left the flavour text at "too green and tree-like."
Total: 17/20. So subtle that I almost didn't get it.
Tirgae, Dewaz Tiller :1mana::symg:
Legendary Creature - Human
:2mana::symg:, Sacrifice a land: Search your library for a land card that could produce any type of mana the sacrificed land could and put it into play. Shuffle your library afterwards.
:2mana::symg::symg:: Tirgae gets +X/+X and gains trample until end of turn, where X is the number of land cards put into play this turn. His tools not only allow him to keep the plains of Troliv fertile, but to defend the ebb and flow of mana that run through them. 1/1
Balance: 5
I want that first ability to be like Harrow so, so bad. Sacking a land to search for only one land seems weak and slow, especially since the new land has to be similar enough to the first land to make the search seem almost worthless. The pump ability would also be a whole bunch stronger if the first ability was like Harrow. As is, you'd need to pay ten mana and sacrifice two lands to make him a 3/3 trampler (4/4 if you've played a land normally). What a wuss.
Flavour: 8
The tilling part is pretty obvious, but I'm not sure where the trampling pump ability fits in. I suspect it has to do with the Dewaz, of which I know nothing.
Total: 13/20

The Fantasy Novelist's Exam is a list of things not to do when writing a fantasy novel. Make a Magic card based on one of these things. For example,

22. How about "a half-elf torn between his human and elven heritage"?

His tools not only allow him to keep the plains of Troliv fertile, but to defend the ebb and flow of mana that run through them.

Good work, everyone. I had a great time looking these over. Good luck to all in the next round!
