I think if WotC designed mental duelist, instead of fight his ability would start a clash like from Lorwyn, with the losing wizard being sacrificed or better yet returned to the hand.
I think fighting for blue depends on the flavor for it to work. Ever seen games or movies in which the giant squid attacks the ship? A squid that fights creatures with Islandwalk would be believable, and definitely less narrow than what I designed. Blue could also get a sailor guy who has an ability to destroy creatures with squids and the like, kind of like the merfolk assassin who can destroy creatures with Islandwalk.
Your guy wasn't that narrow actually. Wizards are a tribe that like to mess with people's creature types and use them against them.(a.k.a. Peer Pressure, Imagecrafter, etc.) Where as it's a bit of a sub theme, there are plenty of decks that could make this card do more for it's money.
Anyway: Creeping Winds - 1U
Instant
Target player draws a card.
Splice onto Instant 3U(As you cast an Instant spell, you may reveal this card from your hand and pay its splice cost. If you do, add this card's effects to that spell.)
Now it's not parasitic.
IIW: Heh...wedge support card.

Hmm, I still wouldn't put it at first but that definitely makes the card a lot better than I gave it credit for at the time. Sorry for the oversight Crusader.

I just hated WOTC for not going there. This is a pretty straight-forward way to use splice in a good way, the effect is cool and simple enough. I just think it could be 2U.

Nice card. It would be better to see the power level on this with the rarity, but it's cool. I'm not totally sold on the red ninjutsu, but it's not much of a stretch either.
Jensei, Keeper of the Code :2mana::symw::symw:

I see the flavor, but this is waaaaaaaay too wordy and convoluted. The ability could just say Jensei fights target creature an opponent controls. Also, I would rather see just one ability related to honor counters, pump or win. And with anything to untap, I can see this as a pretty easy win condition.

Very cool card. It can be very devastating and risky, but very cool. Also, name is great.
Guys, you gave me a pretty hard time. Off the bat, I'm torn between the ninja from The_Cooler, and the two splicers, KageHamusuta and 175grams. Thinking about all aspects, The_Cooler made a great card, but didn't stretch what already exists. Kage and 175 on the other hand went beyond. Of those two card, Soul of Lightning feels a little bit more interesting and new. It's by an electrified hair, but the victory goes to 175grams.
So, next challenge:
IIW: the card from the "[set] mechanics" article that showcases a new keyword.
Clear-Sight Monk1W
Creature - Cat Monk (C)
Clarity (This enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it for each colorless mana spent to cast it.)
2/1
If I understand correctly, it's to have a common card with a keyword that shows it off as simply as possible while still looking powerful.
On the plane of Vryn, all beings have adapted to the growing technological capabilities of mankind. Demons in particular have adopted the humans' shield generators into the very essence of their bodies, allowing them to take several hits before eventually succumbing to the damage, while many humans use it to let them fight just a little bit above their weight class and still live to tell the tale.
Dread Reaver2B
Creature- Demon Soldier
Shield 3 (This creature enters the battlefield with three shield counters on it. Remove X shield counters from this: Prevent the next X damage that would be dealt to this creature this turn.)
4/1 Formed from the pits of hell’s forges.
It should be noted that you must activate the shield abilities before damage is dealt, but it may be done after the order of blockers is declared. Damage may be dealt to creatures after the first in the order as long as lethal would be dealt ignoring any damage prevention.
IIW: A nonrare card that is in some way exponential.
As the last winner, if you are ok with it, I'm taking over
Clear-Sight Monk :1mana::symw:
Creature - Cat Monk (C)
Clarity (This enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it for each colorless mana spent to cast it.)
2/1
I like it. It's pretty simple, well ballanced, and gives a good enough boost if you manage to clarity it into play.
Dread Reaver :2mana::symb:
Creature- Demon Soldier
Shield 3 (This creature enters the battlefield with three shield counters on it. Remove X shield counters from this: Prevent the next X damage that would be dealt to this creature this turn.)
4/1 Formed from the pits of hell’s forges.
It's not a great mechanic, but I see some potential in it. The problem is that this is a pretty white effect, and you choose to display it in a black card. Sorry, I just don't see black going there.
With that, the winner is Egak. So, next task:
