About any "subpar" mechanics or cards: Context is king.
If I make a templating or grammar error, let me know.
The franchise MtG most resembles is Battlestar Galactica. Why? Its players exist in, at most, a dozen different models at any given point in time, with perhaps up to 3% variation, 5% if you're lucky.
I would bet money that the costs on this are totally bunk, but hopefully the concept is alright. The new mechanic doesn't need to be a thematic fusion of the two, just a functional one, right?

I miss you mom!
Our hearts still ache in sadness
And secret tears still flow
What it meant to lose you
No on will ever know
But we know you want us
To mourn for you no more
To remember all the happy times
Life still has much in store
Since you’ll never be forgotten
We pledge to you today
A hallowed place within our hearts
Is where you’ll always stay
