THE CARD CREATION LEAGUE
[ September 2011 ] ROUND TWO "The Divergence"
The Card Creation League is a monthly contest in which players compete over seven rounds. Each month has an overall theme and/or story, determined by that month's host.
Each round, the host will assign a card creation task to the players. This task may vary between teams or players.
The first three rounds are open to everyone who joined in the sign-up thread, which will be posted near the end of the previous month. After these rounds, the Top 8 players will move on to three single elimination rounds to determine a winner.
Rounds usually last three to four days for submissions and about two days for critiques, but the host has final say in making the schedule.
For the first three rounds, players are divided into teams. Four teams is standard, but there may be more or less depending on the number of players. Each team will review another team's cards during the critique period of that round.
Each player must submit a Top 3 ranking for the team he or she critiques at the end of each round. Each 1st place is worth 3 points, 2nd place 2 points, and 3rd place 1 point.
Additionally, each player can receive 2 bonus points per round. One point is awarded for posting a Top 3, and one point for providing critiques for that team's cards.
Suggested areas to critique include creativity, balance, printability, and relation to the overall theme or that player's previous cards.
Players who do not post a card or a Top 3 will be put on "probation." Top 3 violations for a round can be removed by posting or PMing the host with your Top 3 before the end of the next round. Any player that would receive a second violation is disqualified from further competition that month.
At the end of the first three rounds, the Top 8 players will be selected by points (usually the top 2 from each team). In the case of ties, there may be more than 8 players advancing. The host will determine matchups for single elimination. At the end of each elimination round, remaining players not in that matchup will choose a winner to advance. The host will break any ties.
The final round is determined by public poll.
Prior to Top 8, players have a chance of getting a total of 100 points toward their score each Scoring Round. Scores for each Round are determined by the following equation:
Total points of Player A in round N = 100 * X/Y, where:
X = Total number of Scoring Points (Judge Points + Additional Points from Top 3 & Critiques)
Y = Total number of Possible Points (3 * Number of Judges + Additional Points)
3 points are given for a First Place Top 3 finish, 2 points for a Second Place, and 1 point for a Third Place. 1 additional point is awarded if a Top 3 is submitted. 1 additional point is awarded if Critiques are given for all entries to be judged.
This way the grading is more streamlined in the fact that all rounds prior to Top 8 are graded equally, and there is no handicap for any team that has fewer judges.
Each player accumulates points from each Scoring Round until the end of Round 3.
Waiting for any late Top 3 submissions before calculating points. @Team Gateway@

After pouring all your time and resources into your project, you've finally perfected a relatively reliable and safe means of interplanar exploration. Beginning your studies in earnest, you seek to gather as much information as possible about this first otherworld you've made contact with.
Yet as you dig deeper, you realize it's beginning to look familiar - in more ways than one. You're certain you've heard of this place before, found information about it during your earliest efforts to prove such worlds even existed. It wasn't apparent to you at first, because there were too many conflicting facts, but more and more every piece of information you collect points towards a single, undeniable truth: it's almost as if, at some point in the past, the course of this world's history was altered, the realities of two separate worlds meshed together. There are too many coincidences - names, places, past events - for it to have no connection to both other worlds.
Before you can continue your exploration, you must pierce to the truth of this boggling mystery. It's time to take a closer look.
This round, you must create a card that combines the themes, flavor, and/or mechanics of any two existing planes. If your Round One card enabled you to personally visit a plane, your card must be an instant, sorcery, or enchantment you witnessed being cast in this amalgamated plane. If your Round One card only allowed you to view a plane remotely or bring back information via a minion, subordinate, or tool, your card must be an artifact, creature, or land that was observed there.
If you choose a plane that has been visited in multiple blocks, such as Dominaria or Mirrodin, please note which block you're referencing themes from.
You have until Saturday, September 10th at midnight Pacific, when it becomes Sunday, to complete your submissions. Please include a link to your Round One submission in your post.
The deadline for critiques will be Tuesday, September 13th at 11 PM Pacific.

Dreams of Other Worlds1UU
Enchantment (R)
Whenever an activated ability of a planeswalker is activated, you may draw a card. Whenever I sleep, I see through their eyes, these voyagers of the eternities. I know not why these visions come to me, but fear I must learn something from them to protect our world from the horrors I have seen on others.
I will be splicing Dominaria (Ice Age Block) and Kamigawa, and since my round one card allowed you to view a plane through dreaming the memories of those who'd been there, rather than actually travel, I need to make an artifact, creature or land.
Kelidoro, the Frozen Stronghold
Legendary Snow Land (R) T: Add 1 to your mana pool. S,T: Counter target spell or ability that targets a legendary permanent you control unless that spell or ability's controller pays 2. (S can be paid with one mana from a snow permanent.)
This round, you must create a card that combines the themes, flavor, and/or mechanics of any two existing planes.
Does this mean we pick one of theme/flavour/mechanics and combine this from the two planes, or can we, say, combine the flavour of one plane and the mechanics of another?
Wurmhole Generator3
Artifact {R} T: Search your library for three cards and put them into your hand. Then shuffle your library. Activate this only if another player controls a permanent named Wurmhole Generator. "It will allow you to travel through the cosmos and search for vast riches. It's a scientific marvel."
"Thats spectacular! Start it up!"

"Suffer the little creatures, for they may yet rise up and beat you senseless."
Prevailer's QuestRW
Enchantment {R}
Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under your control, you may put a quest counter on Prevailer's Quest.
As long as Prevailer's Quest has three or more quest counters on it, creatures you control have battle cry. "Our scouts have found a world that struggles as we do. Let us lend them our strength, in the hopes they will return the favor."
- Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer
"I found him playing in a lava pit! Can I keep him?"

Just for reference, here's Rikka (with an attempt to correct her power level. Let me know if it succeeded.):
Rikka, Druid Adept
Legendary Creature- Elf Druid
T: Add G to your mana pool.
At the beginning of your end step, you may pay XGGG. If you do, transform Rikka, Druid Adept and put X loyalty counters on it. "If the mana infusion succeeds, she will be our greatest weapon against the interlopers." -Elven Committee on Planar Trespass

Reworked version of my first card so that it makes more sense:
Cornerstone of Passage - 4
Legendary Artifact (R)
When Cornerstone of Passage enters the battlefield or at the beginning of your upkeep, put target exiled permanent into play under your control.
Otherworld Anomaly - 4BB
Enchantment (R)
You may play green, red or black creatures from your graveyard as if they were in your hand. When they enter the battlefield with haste. At the beginning of each upkeep, put a -1/-1 wither counter on them. When a creature put into play this way dies, exile it. As the outworlders stayed, they began to fade from existence.
(I apologise in advance for my lack of Vorthos-ness)
Ummmmm, I don't geddit. When you say "create a card that combines the themes, flavor, and/or mechanics of any two existing planes", how do you know? I mean, looking at Takaline's "Baby Boggart" immediately above, I guess it's from Lorwyn (is Lorwyn even a Plane, or is it called something else?) since that's where Boggarts are from, and Zendikar, because it has devour?
I guess, from a card/rules design standpoint, we're looking to combine mechanics and/or themes from two different sets? Aren't some sets set on the same plane as previous sets, even aside from the obvious like Mirrodin/Scars of Mirrodin blocks? Is there a list somewhere of which sets were on which planes?
Edit: NLynx posted while I was posting - I thought Alara was the Plane, not Grixis? I so confused...:confused2:
I'll go hide my mechanics-focussed face in shame now
Viperion - I did make a note in Clarifications in the OP: "If you choose a plane that has been visited in multiple blocks, such as Dominaria or Mirrodin, please note which block you're referencing themes from."
You seem to be interpreting the challenge correctly, so no worries. If you're unsure whether your card fits the criteria, just ask.
Another note: By planes, we're referring to the settings for each magic block, not the Planechase cards. You don't need to find a way to combine mechanics from Plane cards (though you're free to do so if you choose, I don't necessarily recommend it since there seem to be a number of players who don't really like Planechase or are unfamiliar with it).
Combining Kamigawa and Zendikar here. The guy at the other end of the ansible is there to sound the alarm if the Eldrazi pull anything...
Kitsune Voidwatcher3WW
Creature - Fox Samurai (R)
Bushido 1
Spells and abilities opponents control can't cause you to sacrifice Kitsune Voidwatcher.
When a permanent with converted mana cost 10 or more enters the battlefield under an opponent's control, until your next end step, you may cast Samurai spells as though they had flash.
3/3
Phystric Cytoplasm3UG
Creature - Elemental Mutant (U)
Phystric Cytoplasm enters the battlefield with four -1/-1 counters on it. Whenever another creature enters the battlefield, you may move a -1/-1 counter from Phystric Cytoplasm onto that creature.
7/7 Some of the ideas on this world are magnificent, but they require a bit of... changing.
- Jin-Gitaxias, Core Auger
Old Mirrodin and Lorwyn Madblood Mob4GG
Creature - Elf
Trample
Affinity for Elves
Madblood Mob enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter for each Elf you control.
1/1
Jund (Pre-Conflux) and Zendikar Quest for the Tyrant2BRG
Enchantment
Whenever a player sacrifice a creature, put a quest counter on Quest for the Tyrant.
Remove all quest counters from Quest for the Tyrant and sacrifice it: Put that many +1/+1 counters on target creature.
Coldsnap and Zendikar Deathkeeper's Ascension2BRG
Enchantment
Whenever you sacrifice a creature, put a quest counter on Deathkeeper's Ascension.
Sacrifice a non-token creature: Put a 3/1 red and black Graveborn creature token onto the battlefield. Activate this ability only if Deathkeeper's Ascension has 5 or more quest counters on it.
Ravnica + Zendikar Legionnaire Captain2WR
Creature - Human Soldier Ally Radiance - When Legionnaire Captain or another Ally enters the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter target Ally creature and all creatures that share a colour with it.
2/1
New Phyrexia + Dominaria (Otaria Cycle) Phystric Sliver2BG
Creature - Sliver
Sliver creatures you control have infect.
1/1
Impossible Spyglass2
Artifact (R)
Players play with their hands revealed. "I can see everything both in this world and the next."
Since my previous card takes something from the graveyard, it would make sense that you are there, so mine had to be an instant, sorcery, or enchantment.
I think that melding Eventide (retrace) with the fighting ability of Innistrad would be awesome! Upon copying a potential spell from those planes, we come up with:
Rampant Brutality3G
Sorcery (U)
Target creature you control gets +X/+X and has fight until end of turn, where X is equal to the number of lands in your graveyard.
Retrace (You may cast this card from your graveyard by discarding a land card in addition to paying its other costs.)
OOOH. Brainflash. Of course it's combining one of the most hated mechanics ever (IIRC) with one of the most disappointing blocks ever... and they were right next to each other anyway....
Kanjuro, Spirit Guardian 7W
Legendary Creature - Angel Spirit (Mythic Rare)
Affinity for Spirits (this spell costs1less to cast for each Spirit you control)
Flying
Spirits you control have "1W: Exile this creature. At the beginning of the next end step return that card to the battlefield under its owner's control"
5/5
*the first one, obv
Interplanar Scout
Artifact Creature - Golem (c)
Whenever Interplanar scout attacks, scry 2.
1/2 Now, finally, I shall know what lies beyond this world.
... A stunning landscape, which stretched for as far as I could see. I was so awed by the secery that I almost missed the fact that this did not appear to be the world which I had first glimpsed. Clearly, this waranted investigation.
(Insert OP story for the round)
Finnaly, I had living proof of the relationship between this "Bant" world, and the place "Zendikar" which I had first seen.

At risk of becoming the goblin guy, I wanted to develop a theme. Kud found his way to Mercadia/Alara (Jund):
Kyren DragoncallerR
Creature- Goblin Spellshaper (R)
1/1 3RR,T, Discard a card, Sacrifice a creature: Put a 4/4 red Dragon creature token with flying onto the battlefield. The Kyren tribe established an alliance with the dragons by making offerings of Jund's other goblin tribes.
Kyren Fodderpriest2R
Creature- Goblin Spellshaper (U)
1/1 1R, T, Discard a card: Put two 1/1 red Goblin creature tokens onto the battlefield. The Kyren tribe established an alliance with Jund's other goblin tribes by assisting with their offering rituals. The Kyren tribe established an alliance with Jund's dragons by making offerings of the other goblin tribes.
Kud of Ashsoot Mountain RR
Legendary Creature- Goblin Warrior (M)
Haste
If CARDNAME would die or be exiled, put two loyalty counters on it and transform it instead.
2/1
////////////////////
Kud, Myth of Ashsoot
Planeswalker- Kud
+2: Put two 1/1 red Goblin creature tokens onto the battlefield.
-1: Sacrifice a goblin. If you do, CARDNAME deals 3 damage to target creature or player.
-6: You get an emblem with "Goblin creatures you control get +1/+0 and gain haste."
My original Kud was (admittedly) overpowered. As I've seen a few others update or "fix" their initial submissions, this is what I'd do with Kud, if I had Round 1 to do over again.

+1: Sacrifice a Goblin. If you do, CARDNAME deals 3 damage to target creature or player.
+0 : Put a 1/1 red Goblin creature token onto the battlefield.
-5: Sacrifice any number of Goblins. Put X 1/1 red Goblin creature tokens onto the battlefield, where X is twice the number of goblins you sacrificed this way.
I find it interesting that this round is named the "Divergence" instead of "Convergence".
Gateway : New Phyrexia (Scars of Mirrodin) + Eventide/Shadowmoor
Phyretic Hold :2mana::symb:
Enchantment {UC} BB: Creatures you control gain persist until end of turn.
Creatures you control with -1/-1 counters on them are artifacts with infect in addition to their other types and abilities. "A creature that willingly accepts death is a creature that Phyrexia will willingly embrace. In that, this plane is much like its creatures."-Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite.
Spark Clamp3UB
Enchantment - Aura {R}
Enchant Planeswalker.
You control enchanted planeswalker. 3UB, Exile Spark Clamp: Move all loyalty counters from enchanted planeswalker to another planeswalker you control. "For years I tried to create an artificial spark within me. Having failed, I found it much easier to merely tap into the power of an existing walker. Regrettably, they rarely survive the process." - Zaun, Madman of Dimir
"Divergence" refers to the planes diverging from their proper history. It's not just two planes slamming together Conflux-style; these worlds have been combined as if they were always that way. In any case, "Convergence" might have also been appropriate, but every round this month starts with D, so I have to stick to the pattern. ;P

Reconstruct can't be countered by spells or abilities.
Choose target player. Each player shuffle all cards from his or her graveyard into his or her library, then the chosen player puts the top thirteen cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard. "Change the past without changing it."
Landfall - Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control put a +1/+1 counter on enchanted creature.
Remove two +1/+1 counters from enchanted creature: Search your library for an Aura card that can enchant enchanted creature and put it onto the battlefield attached to enchanted creature.
Round1:
Reality Egg
Enchantment (R)
At the beginning of your upkeep put a charge counter on Reality Egg.
Sacrifice Reality Egg: Put an artifact, creature, enchantment, or land card with converted mana cost X or less from outside the game into play, where X is the number of charge counters on Reality Egg.
Critique
Hyral lcd - I liked bob so i kinda like this and it is very splashy but I don't like the interaction of abilities. MagicBrains - I think this fits nicely into the alternate formats, but beyond that I don't see it working too well. Gerrard's Mom - I'm a huge fan of over the curve cards but in my opinion this should be blue/white or just blue and the ability should cost at least one more. this is the unholy spawn of tinker and pride of the clouds and i love it at the same time im scared that it would ever touch a format at this cost. yewlas - The amount that goes into producing those 4/4 dragons is weird and I don't like sacrificing and discarding. Doom Lich Timothy, Mimeslayer - The threshold bit just feels tacked on to say that it is from that plane Ryder052 - his second ability lessens the value of his first ability, why not just remove defender and make the choice into one for attacking and one fore blocking. DeusofCalamity - finally a card in blue comparable to fireball that doesn't suck.

Rampant Brutality 3G
Sorcery (U)
Target creature you control gets +X/+X and has fight until end of turn, where X is equal to the number of lands in your graveyard.
Retrace (You may cast this card from your graveyard by discarding a land card in addition to paying its other costs.)

Critique
Hyral
lcd - I liked bob so i kinda like this and it is very splashy but I don't like the interaction of abilities.
Doom Lich
Timothy, Mimeslayer - The threshold bit just feels tacked on to say that it is from that plane
Ryder052 - his second ability lessens the value of his first ability, why not just remove defender and make the choice into one for attacking and one fore blocking.
DeusofCalamity - finally a card in blue comparable to fireball that doesn't suck.
top 3
1)DeusofCalamity
2)Gerrard's Mom
3)Timothy, Mimeslayer
