July CCL
Final Round: Leave Yourself Behind
The Card Creation League is a monthly contest in which players compete over seven rounds. Each month has an overall theme and/or story, determined by that month's host.
Each round, the host will assign a card creation task to the players. This task may vary between teams or players.
The first three rounds are open to everyone who joined in the sign-up thread, which will be posted near the end of the previous month. After these rounds, the Top 8 players will move on to three single elimination rounds to determine a winner.
Rounds usually last three to four days for submissions and about two days for critiques, but the host has final say in making the schedule.
For the first three rounds, players are divided into teams. Four teams is standard, but there may be more or less depending on the number of players. Each team will review another team's cards during the critique period of that round.
Each player must submit a Top 3 ranking for the team he or she critiques at the end of each round. Each First Place is worth 3 points; Second Place is 2 points; and Third Place is 1 point.
Additionally, each player can receive up to 2 additional points per round. One point is given for posting a Top 3, and one point for providing critiques for that team's cards.
Suggested areas to critique include creativity, balance, printability, and relation to the overall theme or that player's previous cards.
Players who do not post a card or a Top 3 will be put on "probation." Top 3 violations for a round can be removed by posting or PMing the host with your Top 3 before the end of the next round. Any player that would receive a second violation is disqualified from further competition that month.
At the end of the first three rounds, the Top 8 players will be selected by points (usually the top 2 from each team). In the case of ties, there may be more than 8 players advancing. The host will determine matchups for single elimination. At the end of each elimination round, remaining players not in that matchup will choose a winner to advance. The host will break any ties.
The final round is determined by public poll.
Prior to Top 8, players have a chance of getting a total of 100 points toward their score each Scoring Round. Scores for each Round are determined by the following equation:
Total points of Player A in round N = 100 * X/Y, where:
X = Total number of Scoring Points (Judge Points + Additional Points from Top 3 & Critiques)
Y = Total number of Possible Points (3 * Number of Judges + Additional Points)
3 points are given for a First Place Top 3 finish, 2 points for a Second Place, and 1 point for a Third Place. 1 additional point is awarded if a Top 3 is submitted. 1 additional point is awarded if Critiques are given for all entries to be judged.
This way the grading is more streamlined in the fact that all rounds prior to Top 8 are graded equally, and there is no handicap for any team that has fewer judges.
Each player accumulates points from each Scoring Round until the end of Round 3.
The Narrative
The land around you solidifies, and the power coursing through your veins has quieted from a roar to a steady hum. You are in control. And you are a little homesick. Your thoughts turn to the people that might be wondering what happened to you and where you have been. Knowing it will likely be a farewell tour, you direct your thoughts towards the little blue ball called Earth.
You appear in your bedroom, deciding that a shower and change of clothes might be in order, since it has been awhile since either occurred. That's when you notice the body lying in your bed. Your body. The computer is still on and logged into MtGSalvation, and you take note of all the activity of the past six weeks. None of this makes sense... until you think about what you've been through recently. No need to eat, or sleep... or any form of biological activity for that matter. It's all been thought. Pure thought. Somehow, your... well, their mind was copied onto the MtGS server, and through force of will, you managed to turn yourself into a Planeswalker.
Assured that your friends and family haven't been worried, a sad smile drifts into place. There's already one of you here, and this incarnation would never fit in on Earth. Plus, there's an entire multiverse to explore now, and Ravnica - if you can find it - would probably be the best place to get some information. As you head back to your new home, you decide that you're going to need a signature style. One of your favorite mechanics from the past, but with a personal flair. It's time to show the Multiverse there's a new player on the scene, and your name is...
The Challenge
Design a four card veritcal cycle (Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Mythic) employing any mechanic of choice - except cycling. One card must be an Artifact, with the remaining three chosen from Creature, Instant, Sorcery, or Enchantment. The cards should be in your Planeswalker's colors, and you may use any number of your colors for each card. The Artifact can be colorless should you so choose.
Once submissions are completed, a public poll will be put up. Good luck to both of you, and thank you for participating in the July CCL.
So, Gerrard's Mom, we meet again. It's been a long time. I won't wish you luck because we both are past the stage when luck can help either of us. So, may the best designer win!
I'm calling it right now- worst rare in the set. Even good limited players will find better bombs at common and uncommon no sweat. Worst. Episode. Ever.
I really do predict this to be our worst rare in set award winner. I'd be happier opening a jar of eyeballs, so I think anything worse is highly unlikely. This card wont just have zero constructed potential, but not be significantly better than a mass of ghouls in a draft.
Bold words, my friend. Well then, a duel it shall be. A design duel, to the death!
Also, thanks Kiwi and CodGod for a great round last round, and thanks to Eventide Sojourner for hosting everything, it's been interesting!

Sorry for stepping on your toes GM I just came up with a really idea for convoke, which is one of my favorite mechanics ever and I realized I could develop something cool from it. I reckon you could go with convoke too if you want; your themes are quite different from mine so the cards could end being different enough.

Yeah it's too bad no one left comments. As always, your cards are top notch, but the one thing that might be hurting your chances is that although you technically fulfilled the challenge as it's worded, you failed to keep with the spirit of it by not using an easily recognizable mechanic from the past. I was surprised you decided to go that route when convoke and conspire or even devour would have fitted your theme.
In fact -and that's why I went with convoke- the challenge said nothing about keeping in theme with your previous cards: just to choose a favorite mechanic from a plane from the past. You could have choosen any as long as they made sense in your colors.
I'm calling it right now- worst rare in the set. Even good limited players will find better bombs at common and uncommon no sweat. Worst. Episode. Ever.

It didn't say keyword or ability word mechanic, I didn't think that was a major requirement. I considered making my mechanic into an ability word like "Worship" or "Cooperate" or something like that, but I had some space concerns. Also, not to complain, but I didn't really understand the use of the word "cycle" in the challenge; I can't think of anything that would qualify as a vertical cycle over different card types, let alone forcing one of them to be an artifact. Laccolith Rig maybe barely qualifies as a non-creature part of the Laccolith vertical cycle (+some), and there are varied card types over the horizontal Coldsnap hoser cycle, but that's about all I can come up with.
I considered multikicker - tap an untapped creature you control, but it took lots of space for no real benefit. I also considered were having the mythic get out X creatures or permanents, but I couldn't figure out how much that would need to cost.
I like your cards in this order: artifact, creature, instant, enchantment. The enchantment I just wish was +1/+1, if you've played massive token armies with lots of different pump you know how hard it is to compute all the p/t.
Really? The enchantment is my favorite and the artifact is my least favorite (not only I think it's kind of bland, I'm also afraid that there's a really degenerate combo to be made with it.) As for the assymetrical pump, yeah, that's a vice of mine, result of playing mostly online where keeping track of those things is really easy.
I believe that multikicker, while technically unnecessary, would have helped flesh out the "cycle" and generate identity while keeping more closely with the flavor of the challenge:
One of your favorite mechanics from the past
Also, it would have helped people parse the cards together, especially taking in account the diversity of effects you were dealing with. That's why ability words like Radiance, Imprint or Metalcraft are created. If I'd have to point the real strength of my submission it would be how closely tied mechanically together are the cards. It's all about tapping and untapping your guys and getting bonuses out of it that are intimately related to those actions.
I'm calling it right now- worst rare in the set. Even good limited players will find better bombs at common and uncommon no sweat. Worst. Episode. Ever.

In fact -and that's why I went with convoke- the challenge said nothing about keeping in theme with your previous cards: just to choose a favorite mechanic from a plane from the past. You could have choosen any as long as they made sense in your colors.
I believe that multikicker, while technically unnecessary, would have helped flesh out the "cycle" and generate identity while keeping more closely with the flavor of the challenge:
Also, it would have helped people parse the cards together, especially taking in account the diversity of effects you were dealing with. That's why ability words like Radiance, Imprint or Metalcraft are created. If I'd have to point the real strength of my submission it would be how closely tied mechanically together are the cards. It's all about tapping and untapping your guys and getting bonuses out of it that are intimately related to those actions.
