Hello and welcome to the October Edition of the Card Creation League, 2009. Here are the rules for reference, to anyone who needs them~
The Short Version
-I'll give you a task, and each leaguer has 3.5 days to submit a card. (We have a deadline, so try to adhere to this.)
- Then, the round closes, and each of you will have 1.5 days to post a Top 3 and reviews (And I shall do my best to have the next round up every 5 days.)
- We'll have at least 2 teams. Each team will review the opposing team's cards. After 3 rounds, we will cut to the top 8 players as determined by points.
- Each 1st place earns you 3 points, 2nd place earns 2 points and 3rd place earns 1 point
- Additionally, each player who posts a review for at least half the cards gains 1 point. Anyone who submits a Top 3 within deadline also receives a point.
- At the end of the third round, we go to a Top 8, where each session becomes a 1 vs. 1 (or not, it can sometimes be a 1 vs. 1 vs. 1 battle royal) elimination, until we have our champion.
- We have a "probation" procedure, which means that if you don't post a card or a Top 3, you are on probation. For Top 3 violations, if you didn't have time to post your T3 in time, PM it to me before the following round closes and I'll remove the probation.
- Some rounds I will vary the teams and scoring policies. I'll do my best to inform everyone what those changes entail.
- Here is a long, but very old version of the rules (thanks to Jau for finding this). Read at your own peril.
The CCL is among the more fun games on the MtGSalvation forums due to its inherent aspect of interactivity among the Leaguers (that’s you). We actively critique each other’s card designs at the end of each round, putting a more personal interest into our cards and generally making us all better designers. Typically, we build worlds more complete than many games, as each round builds on the designs and ideas of previous rounds in the month. The CCL allows for Leaguers to plumb the depths of creativity, as the point schedule aspect allows for three full rounds without fear of elimination.
* Schedule
o The CCL will run six rounds, each lasting five days.
+ Rounds 1, 2 & 3 will be free-for-alls with each leaguer fighting for the most points during critiques. At the beginning of each of these rounds. The host will divide the league members evenly into two teams and each team will be assigned their design challenge. At the challenge deadline, the round will elapse into the critique section (see Critiques below). Once the critique section ends, the host will tally points and post the next round. Team rosters are likely to change between rounds; the new rosters will be included in the initial posting for the next round.
o Each round will last five days: 3.5 to finalize designs, 1.5 for critiques.
o The schedule will usually operate according to US Easter time zone (GMT -5) We will stick to this schedule as closely as possible, adjusting as necessary.
* Challenge Rounds
o At the start of each round, the host will post the challenge for the round. This may be, at the host’s discretion, a single challenge for all leaguers, a list for each leaguer to choose from, challenges assigned to each leaguer, or other challenge variation.
o Each Leaguer will post his/her entry by the deadline, 3.5 days after the round is posted.
* Critique Rounds
o At the end of each challenge round, the host, or an individual the host designates, will officially close the round and open the forum for critiques. After this point, modifying the post containing your entry for the round will incur penalties (see Penalties section).
o Each Leaguer will thoroughly critique at least 50% of the entries given by the leaguers on the other team.
o In addition to the critiques, each Leaguer generates his/her list of the Top 3 entries for the round. The Top 3 listings are the chief source of points within the CCL and are therefore required to complete. Even if critiques are not completed, Top 3’s must be listed to avoid penalties (see Penalties for penalty schedule). Regardless of the cards actually critiqued by a given Leaguer, Top 3’s can be drawn from any valid entry of the round. Submitting Top 3’s grants one point.
o A valid critique does not need to be lengthy. A few constructive sentences will do as long as they are meaningful. Neither “Hated it,” “Too expensive,” nor “Bahhrokken!!!” are valid critiques.
Example:
The following card is submitted by Fitzgerald:
A few decent critics:
from Tiberius: Templating issue with “nonpermanent card,” it's confusing and should just read “instant or sorcery card.” And the cost seems steep: I’m giving up a mana, a card, and immediate access to the card I looked for. Creative, but not bad.
from Wilhelmina: I hate the name. Also the shuffle part should be right after removing the tutored card instead of on a separate line. Seems powerful as an instant, play it on the opponents turn and you get basically a free draw, but you get to pick it.
from Beauregard: A bit complicated for uncommon. It doesn’t go to microtext on a render (sans flavor text) but it still isn’t all that intuitive.
* Valid Entry Constitution
o A valid entry in a given round cleanly delivers all required components of the challenge. The CCL is based around card design, so each challenge will direct Leaguers to design one or more cards, but other components may be given according to the judge’s discretion. Historically, these non-card components have included such things as keyword mechanic designs, story pieces, and various ideas for the judge to incorporate into later rounds. Include only what is described by the challenge requirements, as superfluous items may sway judgings unfairly and will incur penalties.
o It is customary to include card renders in entries. This is not required. Some Leaguers may not have access to render design software and therefore will not be penalized for posting an entry without a render. However, it must be understood that a proper render is easier to judge/critique as it is more pleasing to the eye, more memorable and allows for Leaguers to judge the card by its wordiness, a very important aspect of a card’s design. Common rendering software used include Magic Set Editor (free program, the standard that most amateur designers use), PhotoShop (not free), and GIMP (free PhotoShop knockoff).
* Scoring
o The bulk of available points will be derived from Top 3 listings, as is League custom. Within each Top 3 listing, the choice for 1st place will be awarded 3 points, the choice for 2nd place will receive 2 points, and the choice for 3rd place will receive 1 point. It is common for Leaguers to post an Honorable Mention or two along with their T3 listings. Honorable Mentions are not awarded points. Posting T3s is required and awards one point for completion of the requirements. There are penalties for failure to post T3s (see Penalties section).
o Critiques are an optional aspect of the CCL, therefore no penalties are given for failure to complete critiques. Any Leaguer completing critiques for at least 50% of the other team's entries will receive 1 bonus point. An additional point will be awarded if a Leaguer critiques all valid entries in the round.
o As noted in the section on Valid Entry Constitution, entries are encouraged to contain proper card renders. Some Leaguers may not have access to render design software and will not be penalized for posting an entry without a render.
* Penalties
o Failure to post Top 3s as required during the Critique section of any round will put a Leaguer on probation. While on probation, failure to post an Top 3 in any later round will disqualify that Leaguer for the remainder of the month.
o Once a Round elapses into its critique section, any Leaguer modifying their entry after any leaguer has posted a critique, will be disqualified for the round.
o Failure to post an entry within the Challenge round will put a Leaguer on probation. While on probation, failure to post an entry in any later round will disqualify that Leaguer for the remainder of the month.
* Resources
o This is a templating guideline compiled by Kraj. It is quite concise and very useful.
o Making Magic by Mark Rosewater, current head of Magic Design at Wizards of the Coast. Making Magic is a weekly article detailing the trials, tribulations and achievements of Magic R&D in riveting prose.
o Magiccards.info is the database mtgsalvation draws upon when you use the [card] tag. The advanced search functionality is useful for searching all cards officially printed by WotC.
o Gatherer is the database maintained officially by WotC. It has slightly different functionality than magiccards.info, but the differences are too numerable to list here. (Someone should write an article about that)
o Your other Leaguers are fantastic resources. We, more than the players of other games on this forum, are a community, as can be seen by the dialogue of any CCL thread.
+ Question, consult with, challenge and encourage each other at every opportunity.
o Credits
I intend this month's CCL to be rather unique, as such I have some quite interesting ideas that I think should be very enjoyable for all of you, even after some of you have been eliminated. The finals, in particular, should be very interesting and stretch you in ways you may have not been stretched before.
Signups:
In order to get started, I need you to imagine a new plane that we haven't yet visited in Magic. Don't describe it here, but show us your avatar and his lackey. Your avatar was born in this plane and through great persistence has reached a lofty rank among his/her/its peers. Your Avatar should be a legendary creature. Along with your Avatar, also show us his second-in-command, a non-legendary creature such as Nissa's Chosen. Pack these full with as much flavor as you can, since you're not only representing your Avatar, but your world. What kind of beings develop in this world? What skills are deemed valuable? The better you can represent this world, the smoother this month will go.
To summarize: Signup Assignment
When you sign up, post the following. 1. A legendary creature born of an as-of-yet unseen plane. This is your Avatar. 2. Your Avatar's second-in-command, a non-legendary creature also resident of this plane. Note: Make every effort to describe your plane through your design, please do not describe it in text. You may describe it in an anecdotal manner as narration or description of your avatar, if you choose.
Sign ups will close at 12:00 Sunday UTC - 8 (Sunday Midnight, Seattle Time).
This is my first time hosting, so I'm hoping all of you enjoy it~

Oh, and thanks to Lanxal whose sign-up thread I essentially cut-and-pasted.
Missing? Missing!!!??? In 137 years as Scrollmaster of this s****ep, I have NEVER had a single scroll go missing! Oh, the elders of the Seraphian Ring will have my feathers if I don't find it! Alright...calm down, Traversus. What do we know? The thief wasn't all that subtle about it. Everything was in disarray when I entered the chamber this morning. But despite all the chaos, I cataloged only one missing scroll. But what a scroll to take! If it was some surface looter who managed to bypass the guards, they'd have taken more. No, they knew what they were after, which is the most disquieting part. Well, WHY they took it is not important right now. I need to find out WHO did this. Again, what do we know? My drake was bound to the wall with some kind of metallic contraption, and there was soot everywhere. What a mess that was! Blast. There's only one place the thief could have come from...Ashenforge City. Only the Templars are strong enough to brave the wilds on the ground, much less those who inhabit the tunnels beneath it! But I can't ask for their help. The moment I do, every member of the Ring will know within a few days. No, there's no way around it. I have to track this thief to Ashenforge and reclaim that scroll myself. I'll just tell them I'm--taking a sabbatical--or something. Oh, may the Great Lights forgive me for lying so...and may they preserve me through the journey I am about to undertake.

Though wild drakes can be quite unruly, once trained they are intelligent assistants and reliable guards.
The Lord of Turrach bursts forward out of his night-time wanderings of his subconscious. He reaches upward to sweep his wing across his brow, and feels his pinions come away sticky from perspiration. Gasping through his regal beak, the Lord climbs from his extravagant bed and stalks to his private washroom. He dunks his head in the basin and shakes of the cleansing liquid. "What more must I see?" He gasps at his reflection, "There are already so many torturous beings out there, how many more will threaten my land?"
The visions, yes, that is what they are, visions of the future. A place of such pain and suffering for his people, brought on by some strange outsiders from beyond the sky. He saw them at times, always torturing his people and scheming for his destruction. He will try to prevent this future. He must! Too many people would die, killed for their amusement, or of malnourishment, or even from giving up on their future. He turned and gazed out the window, taking momentary solice in the fact that he was the master of everything he saw there - and, indeed, anywhere else.
The beings who live outside the walls of his massive fortress, they didn't understand. They assumed he taxed them so heavily out of avarice, that he forced them to work for his own amusement. But they would see. Hopefully not too soon, but one day they would see that he has been preparing them and all of Turrach for their eventual arrival. Then his people would stand up, strong, because he made them that way, and fight against the invaders of his dreams. Yes, then he would have their understanding, and their love.
"Yes," He muttered to himself as he returned to his blankets, "Soon, they will worship Draqal as their savior."
Now if only these premonitions would end, the Lord of All thought as he laid his head on the sheets.

The skyline was calm, quiet, and peaceful. The water glistened; waves rippling, sunlight playfully reflecting off the surface. Purples and blues painted the sky above, light yellow clouds flowing through the scene. A flock of birds cawed, emerging from behind a pack of fluff. Their alabaster feathers were damp with condensation as they made long, lazy circles, gliding above the sea. Off in the distance, a light breeze blew through the land. The indigo, metallic looking grass whistled as the air pushed through the blades. Two figures emerged, their feet crushing the plants with small crunching sounds as they stepped forward towards the beach. The terrain gradually changed as the two moved forward. Plains flowed into rock and rock flowed into sand further down the path. The taller of the two figures, directed the eye of the shorter one towards the rocky cliff that led to a steep drop into the water. His lavish royal blue cloak, tinted with gold billowed lightly in the wind.
"That is our destination," he spoke a gravely, yet sagacious tone. The shorter figure, a woman clad in robes the color of the sky tilted her head questioningly. Her willowy blonde hair fell across her face.
"But why? What are we here to do, exactly?" she asked.
"We are few, but we are the ones who count for many," he replied as they trekked onward. "We are the ones who have the aptitude. We are the ones who truly understand the way the mana on this plane flows. We understand the inner workings of this land. Our world has a unique potential. It bends to the will of those within it. There is no true god, no all powerful, divine entity here. We are the divine. We are the gods. And it is for that reason why we have come. In order to understand the true nature of your gift, Linessa, you must see it for yourself."
They were at the edge of the cliff now, overlooking water as far as the eye could see. "Now," spoke Celrius, "watch."
At his words, Celrius cast his hands upwards. His sleeves fell back, revealing a series of runes carved into his flesh. They began to glow with a silver light, passing through each rune, one by one, moving up his forearms into his hands, which began to glow with the same light. Its brightness increased with each passing second to an intensity that almost seared the eyes in pain. Eyes focused forward, Celrius twisted his hands in a pattern, and with them, the water began to stir. The liquid twisted again and again, spiraling upward towards the golden sun. Linessa gaped at the sight. Before her very eyes, the reality of her world was changing. Celrius began to slowly slide his hands down in a diagonal direction away from one another, and with it moved the water. The hue of the light emitting from his hands was beginning to change, fading from a silvery white to a bright red, and as he moved his hands back towards one another, clasping them tight, the light soared forward, blinding Linessa in a flash of red which dominated her vision, obscuring her senses and her mind. She heard enormous waves crashing. The sound of birds cawing wildly in fear as they flew away was amplified a hundred times over, echoing through her mind endlessly. She shut her eyes tight, opening them with hesitation after a full minute. What she saw astonished her. Bright blue had turned to dusty brown. In the middle of the sea, where the tower of water had once stood, was an enormous mountain, its peak covered by the clouds.
"How-" Linessa began to say, awestruck with disbelief. Celrius turned to face her. He stared into her ivy green eyes, and spoke.
"That, my pupil, is how one changes the world."

What I value in my life is autonomy, power, and righteousness; I do whatever I want so long as I fell that it is justified by my own principles, damn what others think. At my best I am glorious, exciting, and courageous; at my worst I am merciless, destructive, and violent.
Each an everyone of you came here with one thing in common: "you are sick of the greater good blinding our eyes to the present". For me, there will be no greater good as long as people are starving to death or being caught in wars that don't belong to them. -Grieta looked over the village with a sense of pride and delight. These were the places she loved best: green, fertile, and productive. With her help, the farmers here would reap a huge harvest, both making themselves great profits and feeding the cities in a beautiful ecosystem of wealth. Noting a baloth strapped to a giant plow, she shook her head as she remembered the elves that used to live on this land, the ones who had been pushed away and who still claim it. How wasteful they were, she thought, to have all of this wonderful land and idyllic resources and not put it to use. With a wistful sigh, she dismissed them as relics of the past, and started down towards the hill. In only five hours, she would have to attend a meeting of the High Senate, something she never cared for. While she had always respected her nation, she felt she served it better out here among the people than in the stuffy meeting rooms and overblown chambers of government. She let herself imagine life without a schedule for just a moment, smiled at the idea, then laughed it off as a notion as silly as elves.-

Tellos looked over the small camp that housed the once great Arcane Academy, where the most gifted mages and artificers mastered their craft. Now this ragged camp is the only thing that remains tought Tellos. After that chronal experiment that breached the dimensions and brought upon us a plague of shifters. We lost over a thousand students in the first weeks, we decided to push the shifters back but it was already too late. They had taken the visage of fallen students and infiltrated the Academy, when we pushed them, they pushed back harder than anyone expected. We evacuated the Academy and regrouped here in these mines where our artificers take the best ores and exploit them. We set the camp and between me and the ancient sage warded off the caves from the shifters. Some were content with our current status, but I knew deep inside that I must purge this Island from those shifters. With the right backup I could get them out of here and when it comes to backup there's no backup like the that of the Kingdom of Khana in the main continent. The artificers have arranged for the journey that I'm about to make and given me control of one of their latest golems, one that can fit every need that rises. This is one of the things that we can thank the shifters, new ideas on how to improve our designs. So, with everything ready, the golem and my magics I will cut through the great winds that manage to keep the shifters on this island and come back with the means take the island back from them.
I leave this mystical memory under the care of the ancient sage for safekeeping. Let it be know that a leader is not a leader because of his ability, a leader must teach by example and what better example than risking all for those that have a future.

Figneous dreamed. In his dream, a rainbow colored mist surrounded him but started clearing shortly after. From the uppermost layers of the thining mist, bright, warm sunshine pierced through bathing him in a never felt before bliss.
He was roused from his dream by a gentle prod. He opened his eyes and realized he had been crying.
"Good morning, master," said a metallic voice at his side. Figneous turned over his back to see one of his trusted construct attendants.
"Good morning," mumbled half-sleeply Figneous. "The start of another business day, isn't it?" He stretched out and following his small awakening rite, blinked five times while building up his resolve, then step down of the bed determinately and walked to the window of his bedroom, taking aside the shutters.
"Ah, what a beautiful morning!" said Figneous wistfuly. "Thick and greenish, with chances of some black later today. It's going to be a busy day."
In front of him, the uneven roofs of a medium sized town extended in all directions. Above them a thick, viscous fog soared slowly covering the whole sky all the way the eye could see. Faint and blurry in the distance, the familiar silhouette of the mana plant that vomited that fog from its many chimneys could be seen looming menacingly over the town.

I'm calling it right now- worst rare in the set. Even good limited players will find better bombs at common and uncommon no sweat. Worst. Episode. Ever.
I really do predict this to be our worst rare in set award winner. I'd be happier opening a jar of eyeballs, so I think anything worse is highly unlikely. This card wont just have zero constructed potential, but not be significantly better than a mass of ghouls in a draft.
Edit: Aww, did we lose Jau? I could have sworn he was here before.
That's a good eye you have there, Alabran. I did initially sign up, but I wasn't feeling particularly creative this month. So yeah, I think I'll sit this one out.
Awesome work Krey. Curious, though, did you mean to put the cards on top of your graveyard?
Thanks for that Alabran. Was so into the cards that I did not notice, it is on top of your library. Was having a hard time balancing this guy, but I think I got it there.

Hello and welcome to the October Edition of the Card Creation League, 2009. Here are the rules for reference, to anyone who needs them~
-I'll give you a task, and each leaguer has 3.5 days to submit a card.

* Overview
* Schedule
o The CCL will run six rounds, each lasting five days.
* Challenge Rounds
o At the start of each round, the host will post the challenge for the round. This may be, at the host’s discretion, a single challenge for all leaguers, a list for each leaguer to choose from, challenges assigned to each leaguer, or other challenge variation.
o Each Leaguer will post his/her entry by the deadline, 3.5 days after the round is posted.
* Critique Rounds
o At the end of each challenge round, the host, or an individual the host designates, will officially close the round and open the forum for critiques.
* Valid Entry Constitution
o A valid entry in a given round cleanly delivers all required components of the challenge.
* Scoring
o The bulk of available points will be derived from Top 3 listings, as is League custom.
* Penalties
o Failure to post Top 3s as required during the Critique section of any round will put a Leaguer on probation.
* Resources
o This is a templating guideline compiled by Kraj.
To summarize:
Signup Assignment

Sig and Avatar by Rivenor of Miraculous Recovery Shop!
