Until now, CCL July has been basically top down design. I give you a bit more of the story, you build a card (or cards) based in some part of that world. Mechanically, all I've really been designating were very broad challenges, little more than card types(except for team Tall, but you guys performed admirably). Now we reverse this trend. You will provide some creative writing, and you will design cards according to my quite specific challenges.
The next part of the story is yours. Sort of. If you'll remember, way back in the signups was this blurb regarding our little apocalypse:
Quote from Sign Up Thread »
For months, every seer and scryer has been wailing like banshees about the end of our world! Some see it ending in dreadful flames, some in a timeless void, some merely can't see past some random point in time!
Hmmm...curious. What were they seeing, I wonder? That's your cue. This round, you will design three things:
Two cards, one a creature, one...something else.
And a story. Yes, you get to work your words.
1. The creature card. The race type is yours to decide. For the class type, you will use "seer." No other creature types can be used. One race type. And Seer. That means no soldiers, clerics or guardians, but also no mixes. No Bird Wizard Seer. No Mutant Ninja Turtle Seer. Two types only, a race and Seer. AND. (You had to know this bit was coming) Your Seer must have a Prophecy ability. Love it or hate it, it fits Rubor far too well for my not to force it upon you one more time. Lets see some more development of this ability. And remember all the discussion we've had as to the power level of Prophecy.
2. The other card is where the teams will differ. See the challenges below.
3. The Story. You will deliver some vision of the apocalypse. Specifically, the vision of the Seer you designed in the first card. Anything goes, so long as it is some sort of world-ending event as witness by the prophetic abilities of your creature. There are minor guidelines for the contents of the story listed in the individual team challenges. Your story is not necessarily how Rubor will end, merely a vision of one Seer. No more than 300 words. Period. No 315. No 301. If you go over 300, proofread and edit. A story over 300 is an incorrect entry.

Okay, that Seer challenge is pretty specific, so you'll need to be innovative to stand out from the crowd. As for the other card, it will be some part of the story you create. Some aspect of the card will be reminiscent of the story you provide. Blatant or subtle, that is up to you.
Team Icon - You will design either an Enchantment or an Instant. You may not use any keyword mechanic. Your card will be some form of Planeswalker's standard arsenal. A green land aura. A blue counterspell. Monored burn. A white/black sacrifice effect. But with a Ruboric twist. Much like the Seer, the difficulty here is to stand out, to present something we've all seen before in a new incarnation.
Team Oddity - You will design either an Artifact or a Sorcery. You may not use any keyword mechanic. The card that you design will not have a regular effect. No black discard spell. No white damage prevention. This is the more difficult, so I'll give a few examples as to what I'm looking for. Peace Talks. Aquitect's Will. Overmaster. Cryptic Gateway. Cloudstone Curio. Smokestack. All cards that fit the philosophies of their colors/artifactness, but effects that are not commonly seen.
Seer Card: You must use Prophecy. Anything else is up to you. Any of the mechanics built for CCL July, any printed mechanic, any new mechanic, anything built for your own custom sets. Anything goes.
Prophecy – At the beginning of your upkeep, name a card, then reveal the top card of your library. If the named card is revealed this way, <effect>. Otherwise, put that card into your graveyard.
Round 3 critiques mark the end of the team competition. Point standings after Round 3 critiques will determine the Top Eight, who will then compete for the remainder of July (and possibly part of August). This also marks the end of the world building. With Round 4, we start tearing this plane apart.
I suggest you all watch the Repo! trailer. Low Def at YouTube. High Def at official site.
I've never seen the stage play this is based on but, unless I've missed my mark, Repo! is the Rocky Horror for this generation. If nothing else, it stars Tony Head, Alexa Vega and Sarah Brightman, which, in my most humble, is one hell of a mix.
Jarket Moll was standing in his field, his plow caught in some obstruction in the earth. As he cleared the plow, a liquid began bubbling up from the ground. Reaching down to touch it, Jarket's had came back coated in blood. The blood began fill the land and rise at first to the tops of his boots, but then to his ankles. He tried to run back home, but the fluid was now up to his knees and still rising. Then the sky darkened and the sun began turning red. Deeper and deeper red it turned and as it changed, it grew larger until a blood red sun filled the sky. The blood had now risen past his shoulders and was moving to his chin when the sun suddenly shrunk to a mere pinpoint of light in the newly dark sky. The blood receded and he was left standing in the field, red and dripping. He raised his eyes to the heavens and the pinprick of light that was the sun suddenly exploded in a blinding white flash.
Jarket awoke in a cold sweat. It was the dream again. The same dream he's had every night since solstice. His wife stirred next to him in their bed and rolled to face him. Her eyes asked the unspoken question, and she could read the answer in his. "Tomorrow, I will go to Ca'Rubor and speak to the Ooze council, the Confluence." he told her softly. "You can manage the farm for a few days, and we must have an answer to these dreams. "
"These dreams are a warning." she said, "I fear they spell certain doom for us all."
He pulled her close to him, and eventually sleep found him again.

Pain was everywhere. Pain was in everything, everyone. Nothing could stop the waves of destruction that would crash down on our plane. If you would blame someone, don't. The way I see it, everyone is guilty.
The humans and their attempts to make our plane better which only resulted in endless pollution were to blame. The oozes are to blame for trying to expand their colony to newer regions but now they have only started a war with a tribe of native elves. Goblins have wrecked the plane, digging into natural mountains, killing forests. The city elves have done nothing wrong. They warned us. We didn't listen. Now the day of reckoning has come.
If anyone tried to stop it then they would die. The darkness comes from across planes. The darkness will come soon, destroying everything, leaving a shell of life in its wake. Shadows will weaken and guilt will kill. Other seers witness similar visions yet they are different in their own ways. If you look closely, you can see that inside we are all the same. We are reckless killing machines, killing our own race.
A race of time has begun. Only a select group can save Rubor. I trust in the city elves, lead by Lynu. They try again and again, more dead with each attempt. The slumbering ocean beasts awaken in this time of crisis, making it impossible to reach the only way to safety; The Ark. An old tale tells of a man making an ark to save living organisms. This tale is from a far of culture though, and is highly believed in.
Thankfully, this is only a vision. A horrible dream to foretell the future. I only hope we can stop it. Together we can. I know that united it will work.
Shield the Forgotten 2UU
Sorcery
Counter all spells that would target cards in graveyards until end of turn.
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.
will this have a top8 from all players? In the 1st round all players but one of Team Concrete judged the other team, and that's not true for the other team. What happens is that they have more points than we have. Of course that latter, if the top 8 is for everybody, some guys will have more points. just saying

Protection from red
Prophecy (At the beginning of your upkeep, name a card, then reveal the top card of your library. If the named card is revealed this way, destroy target nonbasic land. Otherwise, put that card in your graveyard.)
:symr::symr::symr:, :symtap:: Each player sacrifices a land. He traveled across the world with warnings of a Rubor engulfed in fire, yet all he received was mocking derision. It wasn’t until Mount Bül erupted and destroyed the city of Valnir that people started to take heed of his words. 2/3
Eve of Destruction :1mana::symr::symr::symr:
Enchantment (R)
Whenever a land is put into the graveyard from play, Eve of Destruction deals 1 damage to each creature and player. If a card was put into the graveyard from a library this turn, Eve of Destruction deals 3 damage to each creature and player instead. “As the fires of Heaven rain down and the burning Earth washes across us, the world will be reborn, cleansed of the sins we have committed.”
- Kazan
(Note: I'm using Word 2007 as the word counter, and it lists it as 300 exactly. Anyway, without further ado, the vision of Kazan:
I open my eyes, and the sky is as if the gods had spilled their lifeblood across the heavens, as all around me is painted a deep crimson. Nothing is spared from this light; the grass beneath my toes appears to be the color of clotted blood, while the bay seems to be of roiling flame. Smoke from an unseen fire stings my eyes and the smell of sulfur burns my nose, causing my eyes to tear up.
I stumble forward, blinded. The ground trembles as I move, deep rumbles that shake the very foundations of the earth, and it is with much effort that I strain to keep my balance. The world is in turmoil, my senses tell me, and that feeling pushes me to greater haste.
In time I crest the hill that overlooks Valnir…what was once the city Valnir. All that remains are broken shells of buildings, shards of brick and mortar flung in every direction. Small blazes dot the cityscape, those buildings made of wood having caught fire in a mysterious conflagration. The smell of rotten eggs is stronger now, gagging me.
I look to the west, and my body freezes in fear. I see balls of fire fall from the Heavens and Mount Bül spewing forth liquid flame from its shattered peak, both raining down upon the land, erasing all that it touches. My senses shift, and traverse all of Rubor. Throughout the land this image copies itself upon the world. I see Ooze and Man together flee from its wrath as kingdoms break apart in panic.
In the end, nothing is left. All I see is a scorched landscape, a shadow of the world as it was. And as it all fades to black, I sense that this time of destruction is upon us.

SnoopYah: Here, I edited the stuff for you; there's still one part that I'm unsure on(I don't know what you're meaning by the use of "notional"), but the rest was pretty easy to fix. No big mistakes or anything, man, so no worries.
The world was dead. The plains — craters. The seas — boiled. The swamps — dried. The mountains — threadbare. The forests — burned.
Nothing lived anymore, and the only thing that reminded of the life that existed were the spirits. The spirits looked exactly like one thinks — white, floating, and wailing, always wailing. They did not know anymore what they had been, but they knew nevertheless that they had been something. Thus they wailed, and they were terrible, each one’s cry increased the suffering of the others.
Why? Why the destruction? Why the suffering? Why the end of the world?
The oozes were guilty.
It had not been a particularly beautiful day as the Council of All had come together. The sky had been as grey as the oozes with their bubbling, swelling and fading bodies.
One had been very tensed. "The end is nigh", it had bubbled, "I saw it!"
The others had groaned; they all had known that this had to happen. With quite some efforts, they dragged themselves into the prophecy pool. They all thought solely of the end, and therefore they saw it: The end was nigh!
But they had not seen that they had caused it! They had gone impurely into the pool; yes, they wanted to see the end, because they had been so sure that it would come! They had been notional[?] joined and their gloominess had made them see only the bad! And the oozes had been powerful enough to cause the destruction — with a little help from the gods.
Therefore the destruction, the suffering, the end of the world!
The gods punished the oozes for their dimness and they punished the world as well — and the oozes had been their most eager assistants!

Maybe we should have two Top 4s - one for each team, so that together they'll form the Top 8?
This is one of the great discussions we've had over the past handful of months. You can catch up on some of it here. We've decided that the changing team rosters idea is the best way to go, which is why I've started it this month. As planned, I'll be taking the top 8 from the full roster. Again, you can find out why here.
It makes sense to me, and the schematic in that thread illustrate it well (5th player of team B has more points than the 4th of team A, so he deserves make the top 8.)
However, this would be perfect when ALL players post top3s. When that not happen, you would have a team with more points than the other. If I get, for example, 2 first places, is better not post a T3 (lose one point, uau), than giving the other players points (because they're still my opponents, despite being from the other team)
(I would never do that, but see a player from other team make top8 because some guys of that team don't post top3 is sad)

Should the penaltie for not posting a Top3 be higher then? For example if you don't post a Top3 you loose 5 points.. No second and third chances you just loose 5 points each time..
We could also get some bystander critiquers that could step in for those that missed their Top3 (they would still loose points ofcurse)?
You've got a few good ideas here, and some that have been raised in the past. To kind of catch you up on the CCL, we've been through alot in the past, say, 12 months of competition. You can look back to those CCLs of yesteryear to see what I mean. For example, the concept of teams really hasn't been around that long, we used to use one single roster. This was back when we had fewer Leaguers per month, of course. And the concept of penalties for failure to post T3s is an even more recent design. My point here is, we are still very much in the development of the best version of this game, and with each new month, we get a new host, and things change slightly again.
Now, to your points specifically.
A higher penalty for failure to post T3s is not a bad idea, we've been trying it this way for a few months now and, in truth, it doesn't seem to make all that much difference. But for July, I'm staying with that system since it was what I posted as my rule set in the sign up thread. I don't want to change halfway through. Next month, you're going to have GiftsTrix as your host. GT has been playing loads of forum games for quite a while (I’m not kidding) and understands fairness pretty well. Send a PM or two that way and see what ya'll come up with.
Now, when I was coming up with the method to reshuffle teams between rounds, I had a few options. The one I almost went with was to consider which Leaguers actually posted T3s and/or critiques, and ensure that there was an equal number of that kind of judge on each team. For several reasons, I instead went with reshuffling according to point standings. I hope someone else tries it the other way to see if it works out any better.
*short aside* I realize I'm laying down some pretty long winded posts recently, but with the knowledge that I'm leaving the forums, I'm trying to drop what philosophies I've developed over the past year in hopes that it may help someone with theirs. *back to the rant*
If I get, for example, 2 first places, is better not post a T3 (lose one point, uau), than giving the other players points (because they're still my opponents, despite being from the other team)
At face value, this is a valid argument. But here's one thing you'll learn if you play the CCL for a while: The kind of people that pull dirty tricks like that don't last long here. I've said it before, we've got one of the best communities in the games forum, and it gets pretty obvious who the natural fits are, as well as those who will be gone soon. With that in mind, a scenario like this, while a reasonable issue to consider, won't really be worth the worry. The majority of us are reliable enough that a decent host will keep as many people in Top Eight contention as possible.

What do I see? I see nothing but the end. I see streaks of red polluting the land, staining the people. The red is seeping from the mountains and peaks, down to our cities, consuming the land. You have seen the recent outbursts of sentiment against the Ooze. The angry mobs that lurk our streets at night. Rubor is falling, and we are the cause. Wait... I can see the mob being watched and guided by a small group, with eyes glowing black and red, all with the same face. No, he is one person. There is another, though. I cannot see him, but I know he is there. I can see his presence, placing thoughts into the heads of the mob, building them into a full riot and self destruction. I can see the third, most imposing of all. The formless hand is controlling him, too, if I can call it a him. It is no longer a man, but a mindless beast, warped by the red.
There is more, though. The three are not the cause. No, they are just taking advantage of our natural lust for more, of us summoning the red. But I now see their plan. The first can see the pure power, the streaks I see. The second guides it. The third devours it. They will sacrifice themselves, as they have many times in forming our current situation, but this time, to the beast. They will take control of him, and use his limitless hunger to consume all the red, and unleash a power in the beast. An overwhelming power, in what appears to be a spark of flame. They will consume all the life, all the power in our world, and move on to another. That is what I see.

I watched them argue. They yelled louder and louder, each one initiating their point with a new and forceful push. I just shook my head, laughing to myself at how absurd both of them looked. Both of them were almost out of breath until one of them yelled the most disturbing line any wizard could say:
“Let me show you!”
Silence. As comforting as a giant worm bite. The wizard ran towards the stairs, quickly followed by all the other wizards in the room. I watched them all flock to the roof.
“Like moths to the flame,” I muttered to myself.
Bored of reading the same book for the 5th time, I walked after the mob, hoping at least I could see a man kill himself. After climbing 3 flights, I walk through the portal to the roof.
Stepping through the portal, I could tell that something was not as it should be. The group ooed and ahhed at the spectatul they were seeing, bright lights flashing and bolts of lightning appearing from nowhere. Immediately I knew this spell was above the ability of this particular wizard. Watching the sky get darker, something didn’t feel right. Curiousity got the better of me. I asked the man next to me what spell the man was chanting. My eyes grew wide with horror as the man told me:
“Time travel.”
I knew this wasn’t good. I immediately began chanting a quick spell to silence the wizard, but it was too late. I looked up and watched as the sky turned black and ripped apart. Light became dark. Up became down. The very fabric of time blinked and became no more.
So it was. The world, universe, time itself became no more. All just to show up another wizard.

“The swamps dried up! It cannot be. The goblins revolting and destroying anything in its path? How could that be?” Zhandra, the Dark One awoke in a feverish sweat. She have been having the same vision over the last months, and to think that she blamed the food that the goblins have been cooking in the kitchen.
Zhandra has been in little cranky lately, the energy of the swamps have been getting strange, the goblins have been up and down all day in a restless stupor. Zhandra knew she had to keep working on her potions, she had enemies to torture and villages that have not given her the proper tribute for her protection. Lately all have been acting strange and Zhandra got a lot of work and the headache she’s been getting was getting worse and worse, maybe a little rest…
Zhandra opened her eyes and she was shocked, her small tower was in ruins, her laboratory smashed and the blackened bones of the goblins littered the stone floor. Zhandra looked around intrigued, She looked at the blackened sky that were vomiting lightning and an opaque rain like the tears of the gods. She knew in that instant that it was another of her visions, but this was different, this one was so real.
Zhandra decided to explore the devastated landscape. She walked and the only thing she found was rotting bodies and destroyed villages. She continued walking, searching for the cause of this madness, until she reached the edge of the swamps. Looking over the horizon she saw it and still it was hard to believe… a great crater was between the swamps and the mountains. She screamed in rage!

Excerpt from the field journal of Enrec Kallos...
As I gazed upon the ancient ooze hive, an image began to materialize in their flesh. It was a vision of the end times, the apocalypse of Rubor... I saw a great unmaking of creation: the creatures, the land, even mana itself began to disappear, as if never there. The very fabric of all beings simply faded into oblivion, and the rest of Rubor began to follow suite. The bravest warriors and the mightiest mages could do nothing as their homes, their families, and their existence dissolved into the aether.

I must apologize for my absence from this contest these last weeks. I unfortunately wound up a great deal more busy than I had expected this month while I set up everything for my return to college in August. I really had intended to take part in this, especially since it seemed that so much work was being put into it being quality and since this would be among your last contributions to the boards, Scrounger. It is always saddening to see someone leave these forums, and especially such a talented and devoted designer as yourself. Though perhaps not as much when we first saw your designs (I remember your green, forest tossing Giant,) your talents have greatly improved since October to a point where you are a rival to be feared. Though it is disappointing to see you leave, as someone whose life (as I'm sure you all noticed) regularly intrudes on my ability to design and judge cards, I can certaintly sympathize. As enjoyable as it is to design these, it's quite time demanding, and easy to lose oneself in. For distractable people like ourselves, the only way to go one direction is to shut off each other path available. I may eventually walk the same road, myself, especially if I'm to receive a good grade in biology this next semester (for whatever reason, a music composition degree requires a biological science credit.) But until then, I'll just keep an eye out for if and when you choose to come back to the fold. You can expect to hear from me a couple years from now regarding a soundtrack for your movies, and be sure to keep me posted on any breaks that come your way. I'll be excited to hear about it.
'In the morning of a new day, beautiful as usual in Rubor, he predicted something. Something bad, awful, something that Rubor never witnessed before. Was his vision correct? Would that really happen? Or was just it one more fabricated image that would never occur? He knew his powers. He knew it could happen. Maybe wait for a new vision? Or try to warn everybody?

Slowly, covering the sun, turning the most beautiful day of Rubor into a scary night. The breeze became the strongest wind Ruborians had felt. Now the judges. This round was amazing. For the negative :\ only half of us posted something. but grading will be easier
I have the flavor! the seer being sacrificed when you play something coincides with the story. Congruence combos well with prophecy, but it's kinda unplayable you don't draw cards for the rest of the game. (combined with rule of law could be ok :p)
This story is cool too, and the cards fits very well together. Eve of Destruction is very balanced, and really red. The plus works very well. The seer is cool too, but it's ability is overcosted. each player sacrifices a land, for 3. there's creatures destroying lands at your choice for less. (ok, then the combo would be insane, but we can't look just that way).
Well, the enchantment is cool. Maybe strong for some combos. too strong. The seer is ok too. 4 mana for a 3/3 vigilance is good too. But how are the cards related? The vision of the seer doesn't seem be nothing close to a catastrophe.
The spell is simple and creative. But the Seer is broken. You have a lot of ways to know what's in the top. Adding that ability I think it's just unnecessary. Also, remove all permanents and hands from the game for a prophecy is too much. Or at least, just giving tokens by the creatures removed. It would be the end of control decks
You get points for the originality in the story. A wizard destroying all the world with a wrong-casted spell. (Although I think that trying travel in time isn't enough to end the world :p) The Seer ability is cool too (care about it's CMC is creative too) and the enchantment is cute too (except the name..it seems from playtest :D)
yes ok, you're right on that. But what I meant, and I think you had understood, is you have to play it and do things while it's on stack or before draw, to can draw some cards. And to do it, you play Congruence in your opponents turn (5 mana is a a lot of mana, blue control decks would never pay that much to counter I guess) and you have to spend more mana in cards to draw cards. and that resources aren't unlimited. But as I said, with Rule of law/arcane laboratory, is a great combo.

The next part of the story is yours. Sort of. If you'll remember, way back in the signups was this blurb regarding our little apocalypse:

Prophecy – At the beginning of your upkeep, name a card, then reveal the top card of your library. If the named card is revealed this way, <effect>. Otherwise, put that card into your graveyard.
Other Card. No keyword. No ability word. No keyword action. If I can find it in the Comp Rules or on WotC's keyword cheatsheet, I don't want to see it here.
Vision. All yours. 300 word limit.

Thought of the Month:
I gave up from trying to require the 'i' on my name: SolesticIo

This is one of the great discussions we've had over the past handful of months. You can catch up on some of it here. We've decided that the changing team rosters idea is the best way to go, which is why I've started it this month. As planned, I'll be taking the top 8 from the full roster. Again, you can find out why here.

Thought of the Month:
I gave up from trying to require the 'i' on my name: SolesticIo
