"Do not despair," murmured a kindly voice. Tork turned and realized it was Seripha, Widam's angel mother. "There is still hope for us to win," she added.
"How?" asked Tork. "How can we find more troops now?"
"Do you not remember how you gained reinforcements from your world's elves?" reminded Seripha. "In times of despair, companionship and aid are your greatest allies."
"That's true, but I can't leave now, right?"
"That is true," agreed Seripha. "You have your kinsman to care for, do you not? Hmm, none of us can truly leave this place, for new battles will come soon and we cannot spare any men... Perhaps we will send one who is not with us currently."
"Who?" Tork wrinkled his face in confusion.
"Aeria," Seripha said simply.
"What? That little girl? What could she do?" wondered Tork.
"She's recovered another memory, Tork. She came from a distant kingdom of mages in your world. I don't know how she was abandoned in the shadow world, Tork. But I believe she can gain aid from her homeland."
"Really? How will we communicate with her if she's back at the castle?"
"There are soldiers still there, and there is a device with which we can speak with them," Widam added, materializing in thin air. "Here it is!" She held out a little gray block, that suddenly enlarged into a screen.
"Turu, come in," she called. The face of a young captain appeared.
"Widam, ma'am! There has been no attacks here so far!"
"Excellent. May we speak to Aeria?" The image vanished and the girl appeared on the screen.
"Widsy! What's going on!?" asked Aeria.
"We need your help. Do you remember where you came from now?"
"I think... You want me to go home then?" Aeria tilted her head in confusion.
"I think the people where you come from might be able to help us. Turu! Send an escort with her to her homeland!"
"Yes sir!" cried the captain. "C'mon Aeria. Let's go to the portal."
Tork turned to Widam. "How trustworth is Captain Turu?"
"The best of the best."

Captain Turu, Aeria and two other guardsmen stepped out of the portal and into a bustling marketplace. Merchants were darting from stall to stall and throwing golden and silver coins back and forth so fast it was a wonder they came away with any profit at all. Goods were exchanged and traded and stolen within seconds of transations and the entire place seemed alive on its own. Aeria gazed around in wonder and fascination. "This is Vooruk, Aeria, this is your home..." Turu told her.
"Wow! This place is soooo cool! It just makes me feel so... Alive!!" she began to float off the ground again and do a twirl in the air but Turu placed his hand on her shoulder and grounded her quickly.
"This is not the time or the place, I will ask you to keep your feet on the ground like the rest of us groundstompers, alright?" he winked at her when she pouted and made her grin then giggle.
"Alright, but I get to call you Captain Groundstomper."
Turu chuckled and shook his head.
"Very well Aeria. Now, where are we off to? Captain Groundstomper is at your service!" Aeria giggled again, then got a almost overly dramatic look of concentration on her face.
"Hmmm, I think it's....... that way!" she yelled and pointed off towards a hill that rose up in the middle of the city. She laughed again and dashed off into the crowd in the direction of the hill singing
"I'm going hooome, I'm going hooome!" while Turu and the two guards struggled to keep her within sight and preferably arms reach.

On that hill, there was a massive glass structure that towered over the surrounding city. Heat battered down on Captain Turu and his men, but Aeria paid no heed to it. She hopped and skipped toward the glass fortress.
At last, they had reached a sort of gate, guarded by men wielding strange glass cross bows. "Halt! Who goes there!?" they hollered.
"My name's Aeria!" cried the little girl.
The soldiers gasped. "She has returned after so long!" one shouted. "The Child of Destiny! But wait! Who are those men!?" He pointed to Captain Turu and his soldiers. "Kidnappers!" He raised a crossbow and aimed it at the other soldiers.
Startled, Turu raised a white flag and stepped forward. "We stumbled upon this child where I come from, the Shadow Realm. She had lost all memory, but she remembered this place. We come to return her and ask for your aid to defeat an evil called Zorruk!"
"The legend is coming true," a guard murmured. As if quoting a book, he chanted, "On the day the Child of Destiny is returned, three shadowfolk seek aid to combat a mighty evil!" He was silent for a minute and then he called out, "Come. You must meet Lord Calan! He lives within this Glass Fortress, known as Zori."

Aeria was led by two very heavily armed and very professional looking guards up a set of steep stairs while Turu and his two guards followed behind two more guards that while not as heavily guarded or professional looking, still dwarfed the group of three guards. Aeria skipped her way up the stairs, seemingly undaunted by the huge men. Eventually they reached the top step and two big oak doors. The guards stepped forward and eased them open, and while they opened slowly, they opened with a certain amount of grace, like they were floating. Inside the room was a grand hall with marble pillars framing the red carpet stretching the length of the room. At the end sat a throne with a young woman sitting in it with flowing red hair, blue eyes and a kind smile on her face. To her right sat a much taller man, that much you could see even while he was sitting. He had mixture between red and brown hair with hazel eyes and a mildly goofy look on his face. The guards bowed down before the two and Turu quickly followed suit. Aeria looked at them around her and then slowly began to bend her knees. Then the woman quickly stood.
"Is that? My....? My darling!!!!" she near screamed as she rushed down off the throne as the man stood behind her with a look of disbelief on his face. The woman wrapped Aeria up in her arms and whirled her around a couple times then set her down. "Aeria, my daughter, I can't believe you've returned to us!"

Meanwhile, Zorruk was brooding in his fortress.
"Curse them all!" he burst out. "How can they continue to defeat me with their pitiful forces! I send huge numbers of men after them, and in each battle they come up with reinforcements that should never have been there!"
"But sir!" said one of his advisors. "Your armies are enormous! How can you dream of losing to these pitiful rebels? Sweep them away!"
"Perhaps you are right." Zorruk conceded. "They are sorely wounded from our last encounter. But before I attack them, I wish to spy on them. I don't want any surprises in this next battle." He touched a piece of his throne, and a soldier materialized in front of him. "Send our stealthiest soldier to the base of these rebels. Tork walked through the healing camp with a heart heavy with grief. Even with the news that Aeria had gathered another wave of comrades, seeing all of the death that this war had cost so far was taking its toll on him. As he strode along, lost in thought, a Goblin walked up to him.
“Um, Ghoruush, Lord,” a sudden look of shock overtook the Goblin’s face and he dropped to his knees, “No, no, me sorry, forgot to bow to God Ghoruush!”
Tork looked around awkwardly. “It’s ok. . . I’ll, uh, forgive you this time.”
“Thank you Lord Ghoruush,” he said still supplicant with his face in the dirt, “me am Grop, you humble slave.”
“Get up, Grop. Do you have something to ask me?”
Grop got to his feet and bowed his head, refusing to look Tork in the eyes, then nearly whispered, “Grop have a question for Lord Ghrouush.”
Tork waited a few seconds then told him to go on.
“Grop have many brothers, but one, me big brother, Grap, when me get in trouble as a Gobling, Grap help me many times. He hurt other Goblings when they make fun of me in warteaching because of me’s hand.”
Tork was captivated. He looked at Grop’s right hand and saw that it was curled into a tiny misshapen ball. It must have been some kind of birth defect.
“Brother Grap, he help me learn to throw spears good anyway and when me got good Grap picked me for him wartribe.”
“I’m glad, Grop.”
“Well, Grap got to be warchief of the tribe and we came to here to help all tribes in big god fight. But Grap got eated by a big monster yesterday. Grop like Grap very a lot.”
The hard, god-like expression Tork had softened and he felt he was danger of crying before the anguish-ridden Goblin.
Grop sniffled a bit and looked up at Tork, desperation painted all over his face. “Lord Ghoruush, where is Grap? What happen when Goblins die?”
Tork sighed. He realized for the first time the implications of what he was doing to these Goblins. He was posing not only as their commander, but as the embodiment of all of their beliefs.
What had he gotten himself into?
He thought for a long time. Just as Grop was about to turn away, Tork put a hand on Grop’s shoulder. He started talking and then continued almost without thinking, as though someone else was speaking through him. “I have given Goblins many things, Grop. I have given them fierce and strong hearts. Too often though, Goblins use this for their own greed—that is, to help themselves only. I have given you the ability to kill, not so that you can get the most treasure, but so that you can help make the world better. Protecting things that can not protect themselves is the best thing a Goblin can do. Grap has helped you when you could not help yourself and for that he is a Good Goblin. When a Good Goblin can not fight anymore his ghost comes to live with me in the center of the world where we live in happiness for all the rest of the days.”
The other Goblin smiled. “Grap is with you?”
“I’m sure that when I return, Grap will be part of the Great Tribe.”
“But what about Bad Goblins?”
“There is a bad place that they go. I don’t speak of that place. I would suggest you be a Good Goblin so that you will never have to know of it.”
Then Tork turned and walked away. Perhaps there was hope.
A couple of Goblins holding spears ran up to Grop as he returned to their camp. “Warchief Grop, since Grap dead you am big leader now. We found big tent of Elf. Many am too sick to fight back. Do we kill them now or wait for sun?”
Grop looked down at his right hand. “No. If Elf helps us, we leave them alone. We must protect this place. Only kill Elf if Elf kill you.”
“But Warchief. Them are Elf!”

The invisible creature ghosted his way nearer to the camp. It was a type of shadow creature, but it was invisible even to other denizens of the shadow. It was Zorruk's method of choice for secret missions, and only it knew what went on in its mind. It finally came close enough to the camp that it could observe, but even if anyone COULD have seen it, it was still too far away for any but the most keen of vision to observe.
But someone noticed it.
Deep within the earth a voice chuckled. "Zorruk? Sending out your minions again? This game of yours is getting old." The voice's owner paused a moment, contemplating. "I think it might be about time that I started fulfilling a few of these prophecies I've been sowing all these years. You and I have a score to settle before either of us takes over this universe."
And with that, the owner of the voice flexed his wings and began flying through his caves, channels carved out of the plane's magma layer so deep that not even the shadows themselves had found them. And Zorruk suddenly felt a twinge of worry...
