Ward—Pay 3 life.
At the beginning of your end step, each opponent loses life equal to 3 minus the number of cards in your hand.
At the beginning of each opponent’s end step, you gain life equal to 3 minus the number of cards in their hand.
I don’t have any particular purpose in mind for this card, whether it should be the third iteration in some future set or an alternate version of the Dominaria United version since the design is vaguely similar. Just had the idea and liked it.
I particularly like how interactive this design is, encouraging you to be really aggressive and empty your hand quickly and punishing your opponent for doing the same. It’s also more niche than the Dominaria United card, being a good matchup against other decks that like to empty their hands and worse against that like to hoard cards like control and flash. It also has the potential to give you almost immediate value depending on the size of each player’s hand, yet it doesn’t do much just by sitting on the board if you aren’t active enough. It’s the kind of design that I think works really well, pushing the player into a particular playstyle without being too narrow.
These are the contemporaries here. Just in case you didn't know.
I think the effect is obvious, but a little bland. Ward paying life and sacrifice is very abused. But tinkering with protection under special conditions can be much more dynamic and interactive. It can make your design pop and feel more balanced.
The only note I have is that the abilities feel like they should swap who's hands they are counting: i.e. opponent looses life based on their hand and you gain life based on yours.
I originally had it that way, but I think that puts the focus on more defensive play than interactive. It still encourages you to play more cards, but now each player is focused more on bolstering their own life total, whereas the way i have it in the OP, each player is concerned with driving down their opponent’s life total. It’s a subtle difference and idk how much that would actually affect gameplay, but I like the antagonistic gameplay more.
