I think I finally cracked a mechanic I've been tinkering for ages.
Suddenstrike Apprentice3U
Creature - Human Ninja
Shadowstep 2UU (If you cast this for its Shadowstep cost, it has Flash and replaces target creature you control.)
2/4
Replace Rules -
When two creatures Replace each other, both phase out without counters or attachments, then phase in tapped as if they were the other creature (keeping the attachments, counters, blocking assignments, timestamps, etc, from what it replaced.)
Replacing requires both creatures to be controlled by the same player, otherwise nothing happens.
Like Mutate, casting a creature via Shadowstep turns it into Shadowstepping spell that targets a creature. If the creature no longer exists, it is no longer a Shadowstepping spell and it resolves like normal (the creature doesn't enter tapped as it normally would.)
If the Shadowstepping spell resolves, it replaces instead of entering the battlefield. This means the original creature phases in tapped as if it just started to exist. Shadowstep (like all replacing) never triggers 'enter the battlefield' effects.
Chaos Mephit3R
Creature - Elemental
First Stike 3R: Chaos Mephit replaces target creature you control. (Both phase in as the other, tapped.)
2/1
Phasing in tapped makes Replace focus on being a combat and removal-dodging mechanic, instead of becoming a flickering value machine.
It could work as a primary Blue/Red combat mechanic, being tertiary in black due to flavor.
Your rules are very confusing. Why are you using phasing. It seems quite obvious you want to use exchange, you just add on counters with the part about being attached.
Shadowstep (if you cast ~ for its shadowstep cast it has flash. Exchange it with target creature you own when it resolves.)
Since you don't want to trigger ETBs you add to either the ability or to the action exchange that it doesn't ETB.
A permanent that phases out is removed from combat so your combat trick aspect doesn't really work.
Phasing while leaving the auras behind and moving them makes some sense although the rules as they are now would phase the auras out too, but the counters don't. They have to be somewhere.
It seems like the best option is just to have the creature enter normally and then swap all the counters and attachements and blocking assignments.
What? None of these makes sense. Could you please simplify? If we are struggling with this do you really think an eleven year old new to magic has any chance? Thank you kindly.
This is trying to be a non-silverbordred version of Mary O'kill's ability. Its one of those things than is very grokkable when just playing the game but spelling out the rules in a way that would concisely cover all corner cases is nigh impossible. (Hence why it was silverbordered)
