The War of Sources has left Nexalus in ruins. Even it's mana seems to have stopped flowing. The denizens of the Subcores have long relied on using the energy stored in ancient artifacts to fuel their spellcraft.
Salvage - Cost (You may cast the back of this card from your graveyard for it's salvage cost. Exile it as it resolves.)
Salvage only shows up on MDFCs, all of which are artifacts on their front side, and instants or sorceries on the back (mostly sorceries for complexity and game state accessibility.) When I designed the ability, MDFCs didn't exist, and it was rather clunky with the way DFCs worked, but it should be much smoother this way.
The ability overlaps the artifact and graveyard themes of the set, and gives a flashback like ability to artifacts. All five colors have access to it, although I plan on pushing it a bit more in Blue, Green, and Black.

Interesting card design. Why not just use the aftermath card design though? Seems like the same effect unless I'm missing something. We shouldn't try to do something that is already done but do it differently just because we can. Unless I'm missing an important piece here.
I think part of it is probably that this would enable the cards to do more. Well, probably not to the extent of doing Charms, though! Aftermath necessarily limits the effects either side can have.
By the way, ChariSays, I would hope you have a cycle of creatures with Blind Zealot type riders
The limitation with aftermath split cards is that you can't have a Artifact // Sorcery split card. However, a template like Aftermath for the rules and reminder text of your Salvage ability would be good on the half of the card that is cast from the graveyard.
The only oddity is that I can't find any reference in the comp rules to how MDFCs in the graveyard are "seen" by the game. Which is to say, like how you can't get Turntimber, Serpentine Wood with a card that searches your library for a land, I'm not sure there is a statement on casting the back of a MDFC from the graveyard. Since I'm sure we are going to see cards with instant/sorcery backs somewhere between Kaldheim and Strixhaven, that should be clarified soon enough.

Aftermath can't have a permanent on one side of the card.

If you have Crucible of Worlds you can play MDFC lands from your graveyard, so yes, this works within the rules still.

True, though a templating like Adventure may still work better (instead of having backsides all featuring spells with no mana costs, which may look odd).

I can't think of a single DFC that has a mana cost on the back.
Edit: Also, the adventure template would only work if you played the instant/ sorcery first, which is the opposite of the flavor of salvaging a spell from an ancient relic.

Yeah, I just found that in the release notes. So yes an Aftermath style keyword on one side would accomplish this (it can't currently be aftermath because the comp rules tie that to split cards)

It would be very difficult to fit this on one aide of a card as well. It could be done, I guess, but I feel like there is no benefit to doing it that way. Not using DFCs for this idea feels like a pointless restriction. They meet the criteria for using them both mechanically and for resonance/ flavor.
Okay so I think the cycle of creatures that can cast their spell on combat is probably just going to be a three card cycle, in the colors I am focusing Salvage in, to send a stronger signal in limited.

Yes, sorry I thought I responded. That's a pretty good idea, I'm definitely going to have to use it.
