Wanted to make a Modern Horizon-style card to look at a unique design that technically works.
Skittering Captor
Creature- Zombie Horror (R)
Whenever Skittering Captor attacks, you may exile target creature you control. Return it to the battlefield under your control at the beginning of the next end step.
Unearth
4/4
It's a 4/4 for 5 you can cast from your graveyard that has upside in a blink deck.
Interesting. It looks a little bit bland and a little bit weak looking for a rare though. Given the Captor flavour, you could let it target any creature. I would consider making it a little cheaper and lower to the ground so its easier to get out and combine with other cards. Like a 4 mana 3/3.
It needs to target "any other" creature or else it can just unearth itself, flicker itself and then come back permanently at EoT (and then flicker something else again).
I agree with DKJ, it definitely needs a bit more to be a rare. Any target is a definite, and 4 CMC 3/3 if you want it to stay at rare or leave 4/4 at uncommon.
Letting itself come back permanently was the entire point of the card.
As I said, this is very much a Modern Horizons type of card in that it puts together mechanics in a way that just so happen to work.
1.Blue happens to have unearth.
2. Blue happens to have one of the few abilities that can get around the unearth “leave the battlefield” limit.
3. Let’s put them together with the flavor of an Innistrad skaab.
Again, that was designed to be a functionally immortal 4/4 for 5 that can be cast from your graveyard, which seems pretty fair for a a sub-par rare.
Another thought: this probably wants a may clause or up to one clause. It's not going to be all that rare for there to be a situation where the mandatory flicker is a downside and I don't see any particular reason for it to be there.
Very cool idea. I don't know how I missed it the first go around. But I'm glad I saw it. Got to say yes it's underpowered on the surface. But the way it doesn't ever really die gives it so much more. The name doesn't fit though. When I saw the name I thought it would be a creature that exiled an opponent's creature until it leaves the battlefield but would have some sort of if it's targeted it would sacrifice effect. Like a 4/3 for 3 thingy.
Here. Easier to say it like this.
Skittering Captor 1BB
Creature - Horror
When Skittering Captor enters the battlefield exile target creature an opponent controls until Skittering Captor leaves the battlefield.
When Skittering Captor becomes the target of a spell or ability sacrifice it.

Classic blue creature that doesn't die easily, love it. Almost feels more like a green card sometimes, but not in a way that makes it a bend or even a break.
Yeah I can see that also. The only thing that makes it feel blue is the blinking creatures part. Sure the first usually targets itself if played from the graveyard, but other than that it does very blue things. It could be black if it exiles the creature until it leaves the battlefield though. That would also be how it reanimates itself. Exiles itself until it leaves. So that makes it leave which then returns itself.
So to make it black.
Skittering Captor 3BB
Creature - Zombie Horror
When Skittering Captor attack exile target creature until Skittering Horror leaves the battlefield.
