YYYYEEESSSSS!!! Thank you! I knew this would be a Garruk pw before opening the thread. It’s nice to know I’m not alone. And this card is beast! I’d be elated to find out that WotC had somehow managed to hide Garruk all this time only to reveal him at the last moment possible.
EDIT: A thousand likes.
I don't really like the passivity of the first half's loyalty gain ability, and the transform condition is a bit narrow (but flavorful, and I suppose you could have him eat one of your own planeswalkers?). Certainly a mean thing to play the turn before a planeswalker's ultimate goes off.
The flavor of the second half is... off. Garruk would not wield Blackblade, he's not a sword guy. Axe or bare hands for him, imho.
I was thinking that I wanted the + ability on the front side to be a negative. Corrupted Garruk isn't really interested in working with other 'walkers, so you're basically having to bait him into working with you. But an all-downside loyalty ability is a huge feel-bad for the player, so I turned it into an automatic effect.
The transform is intentionally narrow. He's hunting planeswalkers, you can get him to kill anything, but if he can take down a 'walker, he gets really riled up and transforms. I am deliberately intending this to exist in the context of the planeswalker-heavy War of the Spark environment, so it shouldn't be that hard to find appropriate prey.
The flavor of the back half is the specific story turn I want. I envision Gideon fighting Bolas with the Blackblade, but not really accomplishing much. Then Garruk shows up and takes the Blackblade from Gideon, kills Gideon, and goes to take Bolas's head. Bolas is definitely the ultimate prey, and there are loads of other planeswalkers around for him to hunt along the way. I'm really disappointed that Garruk isn't in the roster.
As for not being a sword guy, neither was Gideon, and I think Garruk would make an exception for the friggin' Blackblade too.
I'm not fully convinced on the flavor - for one thing, Garruk in the already-messy story would cause an unnecessary amount of chaos for chaos's sake in the narrative, and as for killing off planeswalkers to up the stakes I think Bolas is capable of that himself. For another, Gideon comes from a swordsmanship (okay, and spearmanship) culture and a sural/urumi is kinda close to a sword. And, Gideon's more "refined" and tactical than Veil!Garruk, and has much more of the patience, forethought, and capacity to learn how to use a broadsword rather than just maul people.
But, this is the point where I agree to disagree, because I see where you're getting your ideas. I like your thinking with the auto-loyalty in terms of "Garruk does not play well with you" and if this is mean specifically for the WAR environment then the normally overly-tough transform condition of ganking a planeswalker makes much more sense.
Garruk, and has much more of the patience, forethought, and capacity to learn how to use a broadsword rather than just maul people.
I wouldn't expect Garruk to learn to use the Blackblade, I'd simply expect him to recognize its power and take it, but still just use it to hack at his enemies.
My only complaint is that I was expecting some character development on the flip-side. If Garruk show up to kill Bolas, I would expect that to conclude his current character arc somehow.
I think having the same Beast Nightmare token works against that. It would be cool if he produced another token after the transformation. A token that represents whats next for him.
For example, if he gets cleaned he could make a larger mono-green token. If he falls even more into corruption, he should make more twisted creatures.
I know the transform condition is narrow but as I said it makes sense in the WAR environment and checking for any type of counters is both flavorless and too broad.
My only complaint is that I was expecting some character development on the flip-side. If Garruk show up to kill Bolas, I would expect that to conclude his current character arc somehow..
You're right, a new token would be interesting; maybe if the original token were black-green we could see either a monoblack or monogreen token depending on the path.
Well, I've been toying around with linking Shadow with the nightmare creature type. I could drop Nightmare from the pre-transformed version and swap Menace for Shadow on the transformed version. That would also make some more incentive to make the tokens from the front side, since Shadow tokens would make for poor blockers.

One last odd thing - why the heck is he Amonkhetu!Bolas Tormenting with his second half +2?
