Okay so I like Dragons, Like A LOT (In fact the only reason i had not made a dragon tribal deck prior to 2017 was sue to not having a 5 color dragon i liked (Only option was Scion, which i did not enjoy. too combo oriented)
So I cracked open MSE and decided to visit my old threads to edit my previous works. Try to balance them better.
However for reading purposes I will just use boxes.
(Final note, they may use out of date abilities, but they are designed for EDH not Standard)
[box]Nathairin, Caretaker of Growth 6GU
Legendary Creature - Dragon
Flying, Hexproof
Whenever a Dragon you control attacks, reveal the top card of your library. If it’s a land card, put it onto the battlefield. Otherwise, put that card into your hand.
4/6[/box]
Now this was a guy that just felt underpowered every time I dusted him off, and was the only guy who did not fit well. He will also be the first of the ones that act like the (not yet dragonlord) dragonlords. Dromoka, Atarka, They are all allied colors. this is enemy colored variants. I used Coiling oracle's text as his ability, and i am curious if he is too OP with that trigger on every dragon attack. I don't want to increase the mana cost any more than it already is (Would even like to lower it by at least 1) But I don;t want to make Nathairin a paper thin dragon. Hexproof helps, but i also use my dragons to attack.
[box]Basakadd, The grave's Judgement 5BG
Legendary Creature - Dragon
Flying, Deathtouch
Whenever a Dragon you control attacks, it gains Undying until end of turn.
6/5[/box]
Basakadd is different... he is a powerhouse at 7 mana, the Undying for attacking dragons is great as you can do an alpha strike and then board wipe getting your alpha force back (With a power up). Deathtouch promises to eliminate any potential threats that wish to block him.
Flying, Haste
Whenever a Dragon you control attacks, create a 2/2 red dragon with flying tapped and attacking.
7/3[/box]
Priosa was difficult to design and she is probably still not right. The 7/3 body is weak when you have no trample, you might kill one thing if blocked but chances are she is also going down. I might have to change Haste for trample as i feel it would work out better, but at the same time, if i sent out a 7/3 with no protection, she might not last to the next round.
Of course in my deck, I have a few forms of granting haste so it might work out in my favor to give her trample instead.
However i feel her trigger ability is very Boros feeling. Creating reinforcements when attacking. Granted there are some dragons that do it better, one that creates 6/6 dragons, but this give the added benefit of having those 2/2 whelps also attacking.
[box]Musica, Song of Life 4WB
Legendary Creature - Dragon
Flying, Intimidate
Whenever a Dragon you control attacks, it gains Lifelink until end of turn.
4/5[/box]
Basic simple, not much to say. She allows you to heal up life you may have spent on fetches and shock lands along with other decks slapping you for being big and dumb, but effective. Not much more to say about her. and with intimidate, while she is not killing things off, you have to dedicate yourself to blocking her. You might not have the flyers needed to pull it off. (or they may be more valuable to you as chump blocker for the more damaging dragons.
[box}Iolas, the Mind's Elegance 4UR
Legendary Creature - Dragon
Flying, Flash
Whenever a Dragon you control attacks, Scry 1.
3/5[/box]
Well another guy that seems to be on the nose. Unlike Nathrin which may be broken you get to scry for each dragon. I stil have to water down Nathairin a bit but i feel Iolas is good. 3/5 is not a threat so he might stick around a bit longer than he should.
So those are my legendary Dragons.
Now one of my favorite dragons I created only due to how different he is.
[box]Deepwater Hellkite 4UU
Creature - Dragon
Islandwalk R: Deepwater Hellkite gets +1/+0 until end of turn.
6/6[/box]
Usually, dragons fly, this one does not. He has islandwalk to represent the swimming aspect. And i gave him firebrething to make him feel like a dragon instead of just a leviathan. (Because really, he could be one) I feel it is very flavorful and as I said, one of my favorite dragons I ever created.
Now that the dragons are done, lets move onto My Horsemen this is the 5th iteration of them. I have been editing and tweaking and I think i finally have one that works. They are the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Which usually has to deal with people running screaming, which is why i decided to have them all focused on creatures. I also made sure there was a least a similar effect in their colors. They also all share the same stencil. Casting cost of 6, (4 plus two of their color) Flanking and another ability in their colors, and an ability that trigger when they attack. And all this as a 5/5.
[box]Conquest, the Horseman
4WW[mana]
[/mana]Legendary Creature - Avatar Knight
Vigilance, Flanking
Whenever Conquest, the Horseman attacks, exile target creature defending player controls.
5/5[/box]
With path to exile, Swords to plowshares and settle the wreckage. not to mention Oblivion ring and Journey to nowhere. Exiling a creature feel very white to me, so I went with that. Conquest has always been the OP monster and now i feel he is balanced.
[box]Death, the Horseman 4BB
Legendary Creature- Avatar Knight
Menace, Flanking
Whenever Death, the Horseman attacks, defending player sacrifices a creature he or she controls.
5/5[/box]
While Death originally had deathtouch, she now has Menace. A good ability that does not feel like a repeat of her triggered ability. The kill is again focused on creatures, really the horsemen sort of focus on thinning out the enemy's defenses.
[box]Famine, the horseman 4GG
Legendary Creature - Avatar Knight
Wither, Flanking
Whenever Famine, the Horseman attacks, tap target creature defending player controls, that creature does not untap during its controllers next untap step.
5/5[/box]
This guy has been edited and tweaked and always felt weak. Easily the weakest of the bunch or just too powerful in one iteration. So I was looking around and vorinclex popped into my head. I felt tapping was fine but I wanted to eliminate a creature like the other two. Well I can;t kill or exile since that has already been done, so i went with option 3, Freezing them. While that is a blue effect, vorinclex freezes lands, so maybe not too off theme (plus i feel a tapped creature could be weakened, sluggish, exhausted, hungry,) I think i finally have him right.
[box]War, the Horseman 4RR
Legendary Creature - Avatar Knight
First Strike, Flanking
Whenever War, the Horseman attacks for the first time each turn, untap all creatures you control. After this phase, there is an additional combat phase.
5/5[/box]
Simple it's a mono-red aurelia on a horse. It works, it is (in my opinion) balanced. Not much else to say, he has been working since the beginning. Aside from originally being a wielder of haste, not much has changed.
EDIT: i do not know hwy the box tag is not working
The dragons are each kind of meh. Other than the UG one I would rather use tarkir dragon lords. Lifelink and scry are the most underwhelming while the 2/2 dragons are simply too insignificant.
Deepwater Hellkite is a strange thing. It's obviously a Leviathan but you want it to be a dragon. Ironically one of Leviathan's abilities in mythology is firebreath.
Horsemen look cool execpet green is a bad version of black and black is a weaker version of white. There are less repetative ways of interacting with creatures on attack. To fit their names white could pump your team, black could stay if you change white and green can give out -1/-1 counters to everyone. It's a minor bend, acceptable when doing - counter sets.
Yea Nathairm i found broken so i changed the ability. It is still relatively the same, but if it is not a land, it goes to bottom not into hand.
The 2/2s are only there because no one will allow me to run a dragon that makes a 4/4 or 6/6 for each attacker if it's a fake card. (In my deck people already have issue with the dragon that makes 6/6s
Basakadd has potential. Iolas helps with the scry, and musica, well musica is boring overalal, but i wanted to finish the cycle and eventually she became the final dragon.
Yea Deepwater is a leviathan reskinned as a dragon. Nothing special. He does what dragons do and given that the bulk of the deck is "Whenever dragon you control attacks" the evasion is nice. So he may not be flying, but i wanted to push the theme.
as for the horsemen, they were tweaked many times, but while they do work together, i also wanted them to be their own entities as well. (which means in a a vacuum, war is the best.)
So I cracked open MSE and decided to visit my old threads to edit my previous works. Try to balance them better.
