You may be aware of Random Card of the Day threads in the format-specific forums. Those are for discussing a daily random card in the context of, well, that format. This thread will be about discussing a random card in a custom card context - talking about its merits as a design, whether you'd reprint it in a custom set, or just riffing on it with a new design (examples would include referencing or homaging the original in some way or designing a card to combo with it).
The Custom Card Random Card of the Day for 11/28/18 is Precognition Field.
A pretty good start; this is one of Dominaria's neatest cards and that's a set full of neat cards. Everyone loves Future Sight, right? While being less elegant and pithy, this is somehow bluer. Do you like to design Sight variants?
I like Sight variants. I do feel though that Precognition Field was printed in the wrong set. I get that Dominaria had an instant and sorcery theme in UR, but I would have liked to see the card be a Sight variant more appropriate for the set and its mechanics. As is, the card to me feels problematic as it's generic enough to have a home in a core set, but the awkward exile ability is probably off putting to newer players.
In my opinion the design would be improved by removing the last ability**, making the effect more tied to the set's mechanical themes, and lowering the CMC so it's more efficient in limited.
**I get why the ability is there, but it reads bizarrely. Why couldn't this have been "scry 1"?
I would ultimately have liked to see a version like:
Unfolding Chronicles1UU
Enchantment [Rare]
You may look at the top card of your library. (You may do this at any time.)
You may cast the top card of your library if it's historic. (Artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas are historic.)
^Probably a bit uninspired in it's own way, though.
Color pair themes, huh? Maybe there's something to work with there.

The Custom Card Random Card of the Day for 11/29/18 is Tremor.
This card is just fine! It does what it needs to and can easily be reprinted. Maybe if you want to push a part-red flying theme in Limited? URW weenie flyers seems funny.
After that, uh, enforced hiatus due to me losing desktop internet, we're back.
The Custom Card Random Card of the Day for 12/3/18 is Crackling Drake.
A lesson in pushed-uncommon design. While not by any means an overpowered card (you might disagree about whether Arclight Phoenix is), this card is a cornerstone of a big Standard deck. I like the count-exiled-cards bit not only for working with jump-start but for the lenticularity/dumbness of doing awful things with Selective Memory.
"...in exile and in your graveyard" has felt forced to me since the moment I first read it. I'd have preferred:

The Custom Card Random Card of the Day for 12/5/18 is Shivan Dragon.
What can you say about a classic icon/frequent Limited bomb? Thank this card for Firebreathing and all its variants. I invite you all to design your best homage cards.
When I see a prototypical design like City of Brass, I’m reminded of the wisdom behind excluding some of even the best ideas from a given game expansion. (With the notion that City of Brass would have been perfectly at home in Alpha.) Which helps me to exclude beloved custom cards from a custom set or to move thrm into other sets. 🙂
What about the inverse? Would probably be overly silly.
City of Grass
Land (R)
Whenever City of Grass becomes tapped, you gain 1 life. 1: Tap City of Grass.
What's the dumbest thing that could be done with this?
Give it a mana ability with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth or something, I guess. Other interactions, such as anything that involves repeatedly untapping lands, are pretty strong on their own, anyways.
With all colors having access to cantripping, I would have rather they take this in a different direction and used "Tap each creature dealt damage this way"
Printing this design has been a long time coming. I was a little surprised that it wasn’t costed 4GG or even 3GGG (had it been in a core set). It’s an elegant design though, not much else to say.

The cost makes sense in a splash-heavy multicolor set. I could see the heavier mana weight at rare on a bigger body with trample and the same fight trigger. It would make a good teaching tool in a core set for the types of damage that trample doesn't affect.
The Custom Card Random Card of the Day for 12/11/18 is Colossal Might.
I have to say this is an interestingly subtle way to do combination-platter multicolor in an environment like Alara that almost demands more multicolor than there is design space that can comfortably be used. Single creature P/T pump, especially to large numbers, is green, but making it +4/+2 instead of +4/+4 and reducing the cost is a way to make it redder. And, of course, both red and green get trample.
I always liked Colossal Might. I mean how can you go wrong when your art is dude using another dude to club a group of other dudes? I started playing during Alara block, and my first Standard deck was R/G aggro with this, Boggart Ram-Gag, Bloodbraid Elf, etc. I think the design is right on the money for reasons void already pointed out. Interestingly, these days I would consider this to be Ghor-Clan Rampager copies 5-8.

Give it a mana ability with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth or something, I guess. Other interactions, such as anything that involves repeatedly untapping lands, are pretty strong on their own, anyways.
Personally, I'm more of a City of Ass man.
A Chinese-menu classic.

The cost makes sense in a splash-heavy multicolor set. I could see the heavier mana weight at rare on a bigger body with trample and the same fight trigger. It would make a good teaching tool in a core set for the types of damage that trample doesn't affect.
GENERATION 12: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your signature and add 1 to the generation number. It's a social experiment.
