That card is... really bad. I suppose it's effective against the deathtouch 1-drops? It's got cycling, so it's intended to be more situational than not, but the applicable situation is very narrow here.
Bad design, clearly overpowered. You need to add something to the activation cost to prevent it from just going infinite left and right. An additional "Pay 1 life" would probably balance it well enough, it could still go infinite, but you'd need to add more pieces to the combo to level out the loop.
But really, at the time (Antiquities) it wasn't so bad. There just weren't the high-quality token generators or recurring creatures we have now. It's a card that has gotten better and better over time as the rest of the game has evolved around it. That's really the case with many, if not most, of these older cards that are now considered to be obviously broken or easily breakable in some way.
The Custom Card Random Card of the Day for 3/27/19 is Archangel.
Um. Well. It's Serra Angel but 5/5. Interestingly I think the 4/4 --> 5/5 gap might be one of the more significant +1/+1 escalations, because both are midrange creature sizes that'll be dropping around the same time, and could be the sole wincon a control deck uses, but 4 takes five hits to kill while 5 takes four.
That Portal art is so sexy. Back in the day, I ran three of these - one from each set printing at the time - in an old Oath of Druids homebrew. Regularly played against, Hymns&Hippies, Swamp/Rit/Entomb/Exhume and Rec-Sur, and the like. Funny to me how akin casual kitchen Magic of old is to today’s Vintage and Legacy.
Portal was also the introduction of the use of "Creature" in the type line. Summon cards had been referred to as creatures in card text before this, and creature tokens were already a thing, but they hadn't used the word in the type line at all, sticking to the original flavor of the spell summoning the final creature rather than just being the creature. It was an interesting design choice, that ultimately led to the dropping of "Summon" altogether.
On the flip side of that, Portal was also the set that introduced the sword and shield icons. It was a good faith attempt to impart more information to novice players, but it makes the P/T look cluttered, and I don't feel that it fully captures what those numbers mean. Having taught new players, one of the hurdles is the understanding that blocking creatures deal damage to attackers with their power and not their toughness, especially if they've come from YuGiOh, where the two numbers are literally for offense and defense. The shield icon doesn't help this understanding. Toughness would be better indicated as the HP of the creature rather than its defense, indicated by a short cross.
Love the art. Quinton Hoover is one of my all-time favorites. His style looks like a tapestry. Modern art styles are good, but I do miss the visual variety of the old days, when they allowed these much more stylized pieces on a regular basis and from unproven artists. I doubt they'd hire Quinton Hoover now if he wasn't already an established name, his work doesn't quite mesh with the overall visuals they've got going nowadays.
I feel like toughness is more important for Angels than power. An Angel can be peaceful, but are usually rather tough.
I don't feel like the multikicker is worth it here, 3WWW for a 2/4 and 4 life sounds like a bad rate. I'd rather see it with 2WW up front and a multikicker of 1, then I could see it making a difference sometimes. As is, it's limited filler, mostly going to do its job of being a 2/4 flyer, sometimes going to soak up your excess white for a little life.
Needlessly awkward means of storing up, just give it "T: Put a storage counter on." Yes, it's stronger, but not so much as to be a problem. In fact, they did exactly that with Rushwood Grove! Now all we need is one that doesn't etb tapped and it could even be playable!
Loved this cycle in original ravnica draft. I like cards that promotes light splashes like this.
Still, wish the card was instant or more aggressively costed for constructed. WotC never had "Destroy Target Creature + Draw a Card" as cornerstone spell for UB decks. That is bound to happen at some point.
