So, this was a silly idea that I had a while ago and that I wanted to get some thoughts on...
Wild Crossroads
Land (U)
Whenever a land enters the battlefield tapped, untap Wild Crossroads
: add to your mana pool. You lose 1 life.
Tranquil Crossroads
Land (U)
Whenever a land enters the battlefield tapped, untap Tranquil Crossroads
: add to your mana pool. You lose 1 life.
Secret Crossroads
Land (U)
Whenever a land enters the battlefield tapped, untap Secret Crossroads
: add to your mana pool. You lose 1 life.
Accursed Crossroads
Land (U)
Whenever a land enters the battlefield tapped, untap Haunted Crossroads
: add to your mana pool. You lose 1 life.
Precarious Crossroads
Land (U)
Whenever a land enters the battlefield tapped, untap Precarious Crossroads.
: add to your mana pool. You lose 1 life.
Abandoned Crossroads
Land (U)
Whenever a land enters the battlefield tapped, untap Abandoned Crossroads
: add to your mana pool.
This cycle would basically act as a buffer of sorts for decks with poor mana bases, allowing wizards to stuff commander decks with lands that etb tapped and giving those decks a small chance of staying on curve.
At the same time, however, these cards (especially secret crossroads)kind of punish your opponent for playing tap lands and encourage players to improve their mana base over time.
I like the design in theory. Not sure what the appropriate drawback is. One idea:
Crossroads Template
Land (U)
: add to your mana pool. Crossroads Template does not untap next turn.
Whenever a land enters the battlefield tapped, untap Wild Crossroads.
Perhaps with this template the lands are duals as well. Or maybe the land itself enters tapped but untaps when other tapped lands are played.
Hmmm... the entire point of the cycle was for you to effectively never be behind on mana.
Coming into play tapped would make you behind on turn 1.
Not untapping would leave you behind as soon as you run out of tap lands (and possibly for several turns)
This is why I stayed with mono-color painlands. even if the price seems a bit low, I will remind you that it is simply reducing the downsides of bad deck design decision.
It was envisioned more as a tool for wizards to put in their commander decks so that decks filled with vivid lands and other tap lands won't feel so terrible... though it can get a bit silly when you have multiple crossroads.
Yeah, I understand what you're going for. This is probably better:
Crossroads Template 2
Land (U)
: add to your mana pool.
: add to your mana pool. Crossroads Template 2 does not untap next turn.
Whenever a land enters the battlefield tapped, untap Wild Crossroads.
It actually does give you extra mana if you control more than one of these crossroads. Possibly okay in a singleton big-deck format like commander, but something to look at if played in other formats. One quick step towards maybe balancing and at least simplifying interactions could be to make it only trigger from your own lands. Punishing your opponents for playing sub-optimal lands seems unnecessary and teammates in formats with shared turns can give you extra mana.
@S_Valtrix: This is actually pretty awesome for the design, though there is a design flaw that needs to be smoothed out. Speaking of which
@Silvercut: Yeah, I realized the potential for abuse in multiples shortly afterwards. While less explosive than Cloudpost, the ability of any tapland to double the output of every single crossroads would be kind of terrifying. I actually did find a workaround, though it's a little bit funky.
Wild Crossroads
Land (U)
Whenever a land card card you own enters the battlefield tapped, untap Wild Crossroads and counter all triggered abilities.
: add
: add . Wild Crossroads does not untap during your next untap step.
Generally speaking, the crossroads will shut off Zo-Zu and only allow one crossroads to untap at a time (all other triggers will be countered by the first to resolve). Meanwhile, you can stack triggers to still benefit from landfall effects. Can anyone think of a more elegant way to only get one trigger per land drop?
Edit: Haunted Crossroads is now Accursed Crossroads.

That's even more ripe for abuse, especially with fetchlands. The scariness of fast mana is nothing compared to sticking part of a free Stifle on lands.
I don't see what is the interaction of new version with fetches. They have activated abilities. More of a problem is probably neither intended nor necessary, landfall hate.

It's not about using them against fetches, it's using them in concert with fetches to repeatedly Stifle all sorts of triggered abilities.

Would this idea work?

Does anybody have another wording that would avoid the abuse?
