The templating used for activated abilities without an activation cost has long irritated me from an aesthetic perspective. Specifically, the 0 cost. I will be using Blinking Spirit for illustration.
What I want is to remove the "0: " portion of the text, leaving the ability as "Return Blinking Spirit to its owner's hand."
The problem I have been having, is how to identify this as an activated ability, opposed to a continuous or static effect without otherwise disrupting the desired cleanliness of the text.
Does anyone have ideas on how to resolve this with the desired templating change?
602.1. Activated abilities have a cost and an effect. They are written as “[Cost]: [Effect.] [Activation instructions (if any).]”
602.1a The activation cost is everything before the colon (:). An ability’s activation cost must be paid by the player who is activating it.
You can't make an activated ability without a colon. You can hide it in reminder text for a keyword like equip, but even then, you need to include a cost. "You may return Blinking Spirit to its owner's hand at any time" is a static ability and, ruleswise, both different and uglier than an activated ability.

An activated ability is defined as "[cost]:effect". Changing the template automatically makes it not an activated ability and likely a static one if functionality is retained.
For example, to retain functionalty of blinking spirit:
"You may return blinking spirit to your hand. You may use this ability at any time you have priority."
However, since it no longer has the [cost]:[effect] wording, it's no longer an activated ability. It is now some sort of special ability, like morphing up, and immune to things like pithing needle.
That zero symbol has always tricked me. Because it is a cost, but at the same time it means no mana cost. Maybe if they write it out "No mana:" or "Free:". Another idea is "Pay 0 life:" but it's just not as clean as ZERO.

This causes other problems though:
"I activate Blinking Spirit's ability which says "{Free}:Return ~ to its owner's hand"."
"Ok, so pay {2} since I have Suppression Field on the board."
"No. It's free. I don't have to pay anything."
The same applies to "no mana:". There are already enough people that get confused that Thalia, Guardian of Thraben means spells cast off Cascade or Omniscience will cost {1} even though they are not paying the mana cost. At least with abilities, it is easy to explain {0} + {2} = {2}. Trying to explain {Free} + {2} now means {2} ("it can't be {2}; it says it is "Free" right on the card") sounds like it is isn't worth it (and of course the other reasons mentioned here).
Maybe they will come up with something, but I personally see no issue with {0} as the cost in these cases.
