Djeru, Who Inspires Strength2RGW
Legendary Creature - Human Warrior
Whenever a creature you control attacks, you may exert that creature. If you do, it gains double strike and trample until end of turn. (An exerted creature doesn't untap during its controller's next untap step.)
Whenever you tap a creature to activate an ability of that creature, you may exert that creature. If you do, copy that ability. You may choose new targets for the copy.
3/4
This started out as a pair of partner legends who each granted an exert ability to your creatures, one for combat and one for activated abilities. I realized they were a good fit for Djeru, so I combined them into one card that covers the Exert colors. I like the idea that this Djeru could represent his character during both Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation, where the kind of strength he inspires changes from glory to survival.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I really like this card. Double strike and Trample is a dangerous combination, but it's probably fine considering downside.
I also like that this card works reasonably well with Samut.

Currently exert-abilities are used "as" the creature attacks or activates and trigger afterwards. You choose to trigger on the attack/activation and roll the effect into the resolution of that trigger. Is there a reason you changed this around?
How do you envision this to work with creatures that already exert? Is it meant to be free for e. g. Oasis Ritualist to now simply tap for four mana (which is how this wording works, I suppose?)? I'm not certain that would be a power level concern at five mana for a combo/synergy, but I'm curious about your intention. Either way this feels like it wants reminder text clarifying.

You're right, the wording needs some work. The second ability will probably remain a triggered ability as Exerting can be used as either an activation cost or in theory a trigger cost.

You may exert creatures you control as they attack. Whenever you exert a creature this way, it gains double strike and trample until end of turn. (An exerted creature doesn't untap during its controller's next untap step.)
Whenever you activate a T ability of a creature you control, you may exert that creature. If you do, copy that ability. You may choose new targets for the copy.

As for how this works with existing exert abilities, as far as I know nothing stops you from exerting a creature twice within the same turn, so in theory this should be able to work with other exert abilities. Meaning yes, Oasis Ritualist could be double-exerted to tap for four mana. Combat Celebrant could gain double strike and trample on top of getting the second combat phase.
My main concern is that Djeru's abilities feel overly red. The double strike and trample help add some white and green, but even still, the card could be done as a monored, if maybe at higher cmc.

I agree that the abilities fit into monocolored red. I've been wondering already whether the legendary pair with partner on your mind were the Khenra twins from the story.
It's okay to have multicolored designs like this though - and much more justified than certain other three-colored examples.

Seeing as it's relevant to the topic, could you elaborate on this point?
There are multiple ways to design a gold card. I'll describe four of them with an example each and classify this design based on those categories I provide and then explain why I consider some more or less preferable.
Category 1: Symmetric Difference The card text contains multiple abilities that are each found within a singular color's slice of pie, but not within any other colors slice of pie. You cannot take away a color. The card strong gold multicolor. Example: Cerodon Yearling.
Category 2: Intersection The card text contains multiple abilities that are each found within each color's slice of pie. You can take away either color and the color pie is satisfied. The card is hybrid multicolor. Example: Boros Swiftblade (compare: Hearthfire Hobgoblin)
Category 3: Union weighed towards Intersection The card text contains multiple abilities/aspects across all slices of the color pie. Some colors may not contribute abilities/aspects, but for each color there is an ability that appears in the color or a slant towards that color. You can take away one color or another, but likely not any one arbitrarily. The card is weak gold multicolor, but not hybrid. Example: Skyward Eye Prophets (A monogreen variant would be imaginable, but the other colors inform the abilities (white for vigilance; blue for card draw)); Another example: Akiri, Line-Slinger, who could be monocolored white, but is slanted towards red by inclusion of first strike and a focus on power.
Category 4: Assymetric Difference The card text contains at least one ability/aspect that is in one color's slice of the pie, but not another's. That other color does not provide any ability/aspect. The card is gold monocolor. Example: Rhox War Monk (Lifelink is white; arguably green provides the aspect of large p/t and at least features life gain; blue is... there to pad the cost?)
(Note that once you go from two colors to three colors you add a lot of layers of consideration, but four categories is a lot.)
The above example is category 3.
I think category 1 & 2 are the designs to strife for.
Category 3 is something that is fine especially on cards that include slanting towards colors as part of complex/wordy effects.
Category 4 is something better avoided.
(Note that this is far from comprehensive and is not meant to be.)

I didn't really have specific characters in mind, beyond maybe a Warrior and a Wizard. I'd also thought of card designs for Djeru depicting him during the Trials, one of which would have been WB and another white OAA ("one and all", my phrase for WUBRG cards like General Tazri and Najeela, the Blade-Blossom). The OAA Djeru would have had a list of activated abilities relating to each of the Trials, showing how he passed all five.
Eventually, I realized a single legend would be able to handle both Exert effects, and that Djeru would work pretty well as an Exert legend.
