Toying around with the idea that nightmares aren't real, that they're extensions of the fears in a creature's mind, and thus their very existence is linked to that creature. Also, the nightmares have shadow, since they're intangible. For simplicity the nightmares come in two sizes only, 1/1s and 3/3 Beasts. I considered a third size, and a card that upgrades the tokens by tiers, but given the shadow, 3/3s are pretty scary already. There are also two flavors, the ones that come from the sleeping (tapped) creature's mind and the ones that haunt the creature at all times.

I think each card should have the nightmares leave the battlefield when they leave the battlefield. It would pretty confusing trying to remember which ones have which conditions.

This or some other unifying condition. I recall there even being some keyword idea by someone about something like astral projection where some creatures would tap to have their token copy/token with equal p/t attack instead. I think that could be neat.

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.

If I unified the mechanic, I would do it under the "exile when this becomes untapped" rather than the leaves the battlefield, as i feel like there's more flavor and wiggle room on that side of the design, rather than just a bunch of creatures that have a shadow following them.

Finally a good white villain quote: "So, do I ever re-evaluate my life choices? Never, because I know what I'm doing is a righteous cause."
