I'm thinking about how more cards with basic landcycling could help alleviate a lot of players biggest complaint with magic. mana screw. A quick glance at the Great Designer Search 3 thread and you'll notice that a lot of salvation designers agree. So, back to the question at the top. Can more spells with basic landcycling br printed at normal costs in order to address this issue? Is basic landcycling too good or something? It doesn't do anything other than make sure the game stays magic and not one-sided blowouts that neither player enjoys. Looking forward to your thoughts. Thanks
I can only speak from my experience, but Basic landcycling is incredibly potent in limited. It feels like you are hacking the game. It simultaneously fixes and ramps your mana, doing a lot to bypass the "unforeseen risk" of normal Cycling. This is, however, also what makes it very fun.
I think it's telling we haven't seen it in a standard legal set since Alara block, aside from a couple similar analogues like Shefet Monitor.
I think it can severely warp a draft environment that isn't based around multicolor. I could see it appearing as non-keyworded one-off in most sets; something like a single artifact creature with "2, Discard this card: Search your library for a basic land card, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then shuffle your library."
Traumatic Visions shouldn't cost 1UU and still remain a common or the land cycling ability would need to cost more mana. None of the cards you mentioned aside from Cancel were common during their first printing. It could be acceptable at uncommon but a strictly better Cancel probably wouldn't be at common in a Standard set.
This is a really easy question, look at literally every other card with basic landcycling. They are over costed by at least 1 but upwards of 3. There are only two cards with the ability at less than 5CMC, one is a land and the other is multicolor card from a commander product, so while Traumatic Visionsn might be over costed it couldn't cost 1UU.
To be clear, in a commander product or another non-Standard product, AtlasNova's suggestion would be fine, similar to how user_938036 subtle mentioning of Sylvan Reclamation. However for limited purposes, it'd be too strong, especially at common.
We've got Cancel
and then there's
Dissolve
Dissipate
Disallow
Forbid
and so on
