I've had MSE for years, and would now like to update MSE to include M15 templates onto Windows 10 Home but don't know how to go about it and haven't been able to locate any helpful information on how to do so. If you're reading this and know how to go about it, please provide instructions or a link to such instructions. tyia
I got Magic Set Editor 2.0 updated to M15 to work on fully updated Windows 10 Home.
Here's how...
i. Familiarize yourself with the following directions before starting the process.
ii. During the installation and update process, continue to read one or two instructions in advance because, as you will see, some are processively linked.
iii. Don't skip any steps.
iv. If you are technically challenged (and/or lazy, like me), prepare yourself emotionally for a little mental exercise. In the end, it will be worth the effort and inconvenience.
1. Save all of your existing Magic Set Editor (MSE) set files to an external storage device such as a thumb drive.
2. Uninstall and delete all traces of MSE from your computer/device.
2.5. OPTIONAL: Fully update your browser and windows.
3. Close all programs, apps, etc. other than this web browser window.
4. Open another web browser window and arrange your screen so that you can view these instructions as you execute them.
5. Chrome users open the “Customize and Control” dropdown menu in the upper right corner of the Chrome menu bar. (NonChrome users, do the equivalent for your respective browser.)
6. Chrome users, click “Advanced”.
7. Scroll down (if necessary) to “Downloads”.
8. Click “CHANGE”.
9. Select “Desktop” from the menu. (NOTE: There is no “Apply” or “Save” option in Chrome. It just saves the new setting automatically.)
11. Immediately following download, you may be prompted to install MSE via an installation wizard, do not install it at this point. Instead, close the installation window.
12. After you close the installation window, find the MSE installation icon on your desktop.
13. Right click the MSE icon that's on your desktop.
14. Choose “run as administrator”.
15. The installation window will open. BUT WAIT!
16. Do not yet click install.
17. FIRST
Change the destination folder from
C:\Program files, bla bla
to
C:\Desktop
18. Then click “Install”.
19. After installation, click Start Menu.
20. Locate the MSE icon in Start Menu.
22. Right click the MSE icon in Start Menu.
22. Choose “More”.
23. Choose “file location”.
24. Find the MSE file icon in whatever file window opens.
25. Drag and drop the MSE icon from that file window onto your desktop.
26. Close the file window.
27. Right click on the MSE icon now located on your desktop.
35. Instead, drag the MSE installer icon that is on your desktop over to the MSE 2.0 icon that is also on your desktop, and drop the M15 installer icon onto the MSE 2.0 icon. At this point, the M15 update installer should run causing a window to open.
36. Click install.
37. Delete MSE M15 updater.
38. Run MSE. At this point, MSE should be running correctly.
39. Post in this thread to share suggestions, corrections, and improvements or to just let us know if this helped you.
i think if you download the file to the desktop n install there, not in program files- that's what worked for me when i was having problems
i uninstalled mse. when reloading, the download automatically directs to C/program files. there's a browser that allows you to choose other C locations but not desktop. the command can be manually entered, but i don't know what to type. so now my question is, what is the command syntax that will direct the download destination to desktop?
I feel bad because I know I could help with this in person but there's no way I can help in this manner. I've tackled a similar issue a while back with my MSE. The best I can do from here is to research how to change the file location to the desktop. It can be done I promise. As a matter of fact, I think the MSE instructs you to do it anyway. I've being using iPad for a while now and haven't used MSE in sometime but I will be in a few months. Not that that info helps you in anyway. Good luck though.
I'm pulling my hair out. After uninstalling and reinstalling MSE infinity times, I can't update it and now can't even get old 8th Edition old Modern templates to work properly. I really wish MSE hadn't been abandonded. Looking everywhere for information about how to fix it whithout any success. All data I can find is 3+ years old. Anyone have or know of helpful information for properly installing MSE? Or perhaps another program that basically does the same thing?
I looked for the MSE Thread to link it but couldn't find it. Does it exist anymore? I don't know of any other programs as robust and full-featured as MSE but currently I'm using MTG.Design. It has many options but nothing compared to MSE. Really sorry that you're going through this and I wish I could help. I hope I don't have this much trouble installing it in the near future. Good luck
The template installers don't do anything other than extracting the files to the correct location. If they don't work, try doing it manually. If you can't find the correct files, maybe I can upload them from my installation.

I've reinstalled MSE 2.0 both in C program files and to desktop, neither of which have worked properly. It opens/runs and allows me to open and modify existing sets, but won't allow me to create a new set. And M15 templates still can't be downloaded. It tells me a path can't be found. Honestly, at this point M15 would me nice, but I'd just like it to operate , period - with or without M15 templates.
Have you checked this out? Yeah, I know - another forum I guess you would have to join, and it looks like there is not a lot of activity, but there are some blokes mucking about there.

Your issue may have something to do with your permissions settings. Windows 8/10 changed them around a bit from Windows 7* so that's why it doesn't work the same, but installing to the desktop usually works fine.
From the file explorer, try right clicking on the desktop folder, and opening properties. Under the "Security" tab, you should be able to adjust the permissions to allow programs to make changes (i.e., add/remove files).
Basically, this is what you have to do if you're running it on Windows 7/10, but there's a trick to it to get the package updater to run properly (if that's what you're using). If MSE isn't asking you to allow changes when you start it, the package updater will not update or install anything even though it says it did. To get it how you want it (these directions are for Windows 10):
- Right click MSE's exe or shortcut to it.
- Compatability tab
- Check the option "Run this program as an administrator".
The package updater opens MSE by itself, even if it's not already running, which is why it can silently fail because it's trying to make modifications it basically isn't allowed to make. The above steps force MSE to ask for confirmation on startup to be able to make such changes, rather than silently fail to allow them.
You should be good to go if you can get MSE to ask for permission to modify things every time it runs. It's a bit inconvenient, but I hardly think about it now.

If I'm not missing anything, you should be able to just copy the folder into your data folder and it should work. Stop using these installers if they don't work. It might be that there are edits to the script and card field files necessary to make the M15 template work, but I think you can try it like this first.

You mean download the file, extract it (to desktop), then drag and drop the M15 unpdater desktop icon onto the MSE desktop icon?
I tried that. It didn't work. What am I doing wrong?
Still wondering why i can't get MSE to properly update to M15. I thought I had it at one point, but though I did get it to work again, it didn't update completely. I was wondering if anyone has or would provide a step by step process explaining (or showing via video) how to upload/update MSE to its most current iteration. tyia
I'm running Windows 10 Home, saw the warning about not installing to Program Files, and put the MSE folder in the root C:\ folder. It seems to be working fine. Thanks for the link to the update that includes M15 frames.

After extracting you shouldn't have a M15 updater icon, but rather a bunch of individual folders IIRC.
Are you aware that a .mse-installer is itself just a self-extracting packed archive? You can use it with your local application you use on .zip file and extract it (e. g. WinZip, WinRAR etc.), so you have just a bunch of folders (ending with .mse-style and .mse-font etc) and these can be copy-pasted (or drag-n-dropped) directly into the data folder.
Dragging the icon onto mse.exe or couble-clicking should do the same, because the double-clicking is already linked to mse.exe if you installed it correctly once.
If you still have only the .mse-installer icon and no folders, you still should be able to get one level deeper by using Right click>"Open with..."

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

That's what I did early on, but it still wasn't working, so I did the steps above to cover all my bases.
