Cool podcast. Look forward to hearing some Duel Deck progress when it comes.
Dan and I talked a lot when I was initially putting together Serenta, a -1/-1 counter themed set, so when I saw brainwash I came to many of the same conclusions that was shared here. Instead of marking cards with -1/-1 counters, my solution was temptation, a mechanic that allowed cards to become marked either by your choice or by other cards:
You could still make cards that actively "corrupted" like Reuben and Dan talked about, and did things based on enemy cards having -1/-1 counters (In fact that's a sub theme in Serenta.) My solution was just an inverse for flavor reasons, as the term "temptation" defines along with the color change.
First card that comes to mind for your challenge:
Creature - Goblin Shaman (U)
Whenever a card leaves your graveyard, Auntie's Herald deals 2 damage to target creature and you gain 2 life. Aunties make sure the boggarts share what they know so her heralds can do something actually useful.

Boros Crazed SlasherWR
Creature - Goblin Soldier (U)
Boros Master Slasher gets +1/+1 if it has flying. The same is true for first strike, double strike, haste, menace, and vigilance. We taught him everything we knew. Big mistake.
-Taravin, Boros Captain
Creature - Goblin Wizard (U) T: Put a 1/0 red Elemental creature token onto the battlefield with haste and a +1/+1 counter on it. T, Remove a +1/+1 counter from a creature you control: Put two 1/0 red Elemental creature tokens onto the battlefield with haste and a +1/+1 counter on each of them. More fire is better fire!
First, thanks for the critique. It wasn't as hard as I expected. Actually, I didn't even expect to see a card from our project here at all. Also, thanks for mentioning me and my articles again ("The Lion's Lair", link in signature). We were aware of many of the issues you talk about, such as restricting the design space of other things using -1/-1 counters, but we just considered it within our block, not in the blocks surrounding it. Trying to do it would be very hard in my opinion, because a custom block doesn't have any official block before or after it. In fact, the great majority or cards caring about -1/-1 counters in the block this comes from (Ormos, those interested can check the links in my signature) do so either via brainwash or via interacting with brainwash. Also, hearing you talk about it made me understand like never before how different it is to take a card in a vacuum and inside its environment. To understand the flavor of it, including why it is a Rat, you have to know the larger picture of the set: what the Brotherhood is, how brainwash is tied to it, etc... For example, there are other things that let you take control of the creature, this just happens to not be one of them. And yes, the block is top down, at least in the sense that flavor came first and we are trying to capture it with the mechanics. Finally, as we have it now the discard is random, but I was honestly wondering whether that should not be the case even before hearing your critique. The same goes for your version of brainwash. I too would like to know how it plays, but unfortunately we haven't run any playtest yet (planning to do that soon), except for a couple playtests Flatline had in real life, but I don't know if this card was involved in them.

• The two public custom sets I've been part a part of the design team for: "Brotherhood of Ormos" - Blog post with all info - set thread - design skeleton / card list || "Extinctia: Homo Evanuit" - Blog post with all info - set thread - card list spreadsheet
• "The Lion's Lair", my article series about MTG and custom card design in particular. Latest article here. Here is the article index.Rather outdated by now, and based on the old MCC rubric, but I'm leaving this here for anybody that might be interested anyway.
• My only public attempt at being a writer: the story of my Leonin custom planeswalker Jeff Lionheart. (I have a very big one that I'm working on right now but that's private for now, and I don't know if I will ever actually publish it, and I also have ideas for multiple future ones, including one where I'm going to reprise Jeff.)
Longtime fan of your podcast here, posting for the first time. Things seem to be rather quiet in this area of the forums lately, but I'm hoping I'll be able to be a part of the custom card community here (and maybe get some of my cards critiqued!)
Creature - Goblin Artificer (U)
Whenever you discard a card, you may pay 1. If you do, put a 1/1 colorless Thopter artifact creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
Bomber Squad 3R
Creature - Goblin Warrior (U)
When Bomber Squad enters the battlefield, put two 1/1 Goblin creature token onto the battlefield.
Whenever a Goblin you control dies, it deals 2 damage to each player.
Goblin Head-Shrinker (Uncommon) UR
Creature - Goblin Shaman
Enchanted creatures your opponents control have power 1.
Goblin Head-Shrinker gets +1/+0 for each enchanted creature your opponents control.
My submission for the design challenge! This is actually a card from my upcoming set, "Ante Up!" which is a chance themed set, thus it has a fair amount of dice rolling and coin flipping at lower rarities. It's actually themed after conspiracy, for limited formats only.
EDIT: Also another submission from Jeremy H
Goblin Strategist 1RR
Creature - Goblin (U)
Each creature card in your hand has dash. The dash cost is equal to its mana cost.
Dash [1RR] (You may cast this spell for its dash cost. If you do, it gains haste, and it's returned from the battlefield to its owner's hand at the beginning of the next end step.) When the humanfolk were too slow, Glak moved them in front of the goblins.
Creature - Goblin Warrior (U)
Each Equipment you control has "Equipped creature gets +1/+1 and has prowess." In hob hands, even the most dainty of sundries is a grimly serious weapon.
Advocate of Aggression
Creature - Goblin Warrior (U)
Whenever another creature you control attacks, if that creature entered the battlefield this turn, it gets +2/+0 and gains trample until end of turn. Gink had only one plan....Attack!

Creature - Goblin Artificer (Uncommon)
Each artifact creature you control gets +2/+0 and has "When this creature attacks or blocks, sacrifice it at the end of combat." "We can't trust the goblins, but perheps we could learn an important lesson from them; Sometimes, the key to success is being unpredictable." - Pia and Kiran Nalaar
Creature - Goblin Shaman (U) (B/R), Sacrifice two Goblins: Put a 4/4 red Dragon creature token with flying onto the battlefield. "To be a good chef, you have to convince others to get in the pot."
