That was quite fun to listen to. I was kinda of the edge of my seat to hear what you might say about any one of my entries! Looks like I have to wait till next time.
I really like episodes like this. So much so in fact I had considered doing my own podcast dedicated entirely to critiquing cards a few months ago. I think hearing this reinforces my desire to do it. Maybe once I'm back home and settled in August.
The episode with all the variations on Lightning Bolt definitely still ranks in one of my top 3. The advice gleaned from these blitz review sessions tends to be very concrete. I think I'm down for more of these type of episodes! This prompt might have aimed a little high, leading to more work for the reviewers, but it was every bit as fun to listen to as a buch of "classic" lightning bolt esque designs.
For the record, it's show-me-show-you-ramen. Soy sauce ramen is my favorite kind, and an old Kikkoman flash animation had "Show me shoyu," where shoyu is the Japanese word for soy sauce. Completely obscure reference
When I created Mother of Phoenixes, I was thinking "what would get me to make this a commander general?" I know there's a lot of talk about Timmy, which is related to commander, and Maro has stated that not every legendary creature is built with commander in mind, but I really think a first legendary creature of a specific subtype should have commander implications...
In any case, I disagree with some individual assessments (our versions of what is "too complex" tend to be different), but overall kudos for taking on this task with gusto.
I enjoyed the commentary on the cards. I also was crossing my fingers hoping to hear one of my cards come up, even if it is to be torn to shreds and rated 2. Hopefully next time.
Yay, they liked my card! I totally agree that the pyroclasm should happen on the flip back. It helps break up the text. Also, I still think it has to exile to transform since any damage assigned to one side would still be assigned on the other. Maybe instead make it,
Skaros, Shard of Eternity 2RR
Legendary Creature - Phoenix
Flying
When Skaros, Shard of Eternity dies, return it to the battlefield transformed.
3/3
//
Ashes of Skaros
Legendary Creature - Phoenix
At the end of your turn, transform Ashes of Skaros and deal 2 damage to each other creature and each player.
0/1
In any case, I disagree with some individual assessments (our versions of what is "too complex" tend to be different), but overall kudos for taking on this task with gusto.
I will now see that in my nightmares . Japan, I just don't get it, why are so many things just more abstracted?
I'm super flattered you guys liked Darkfeather enough to give it a 10... even if it doesn't qualify for the challenge! I am curious what type(s) the card would be if not Phoenix... and part of me wonders if I made it a Legendary Creature - Demon Phoenix it'd have weaseled in somehow (probably not). Suggestions from listeners also encouraged (PM me!), I'd love to see the card make it into a set of some variety.
Definitely do it again! Episodes like this are wonderful in my opinion!
Also, this is the second time you critique a card of mine on the podcast and I'm very glad I went from essentially "try again" to an 8 for the card in itself! And no worry, I perfectly understand the critique about the focus of the card and I agree the other card with undying (Mother of Phoenixes if I remember well) fits the challenge better by focusing more on Phoenix tribal. Many thanks for the critique anyway!

Taking a little inspiration from this design challenge, I presented Reddit with a partially-filled-in "Mad Lib" card: https://www.reddit.com/r/custommagic/comments/38jwu9/custom_card_mad_libs_1_you_fill_in_the_blanks/
