So, some of you may know this Future Sight card - Steamflogger Boss. Its a card that had to make two new pieces of rules text just for it to be printable, but also has no limit at all to what it could refer to in terms of mechanics other than having a creature type based around interacting with another subtype of some kind. So, I decided to come up with my own set of cards for it, based on the new artifact tokens, Gold and Landmine.
Starlight Artificier 1W
Creature - Human Rigger 1W, T: Assemble a Contraption. It is an artifact token with "Sacrifice a Contraption: Gain 2 life."
2/2
Melodic Composer 3UU
Creature - Human Rigger
When Melodic Composer enters the battlefield, assemble a Contraption. It is an artifact token with "Sacrifice a Contraption: Tap target creature."
3/4
Blackheart Forger 2B
Creature - Human Rigger
Deathtouch
Whenever Blackheart Forger attacks, assemble a Contraption. It is an artifact token with "Sacrifice a Contraption: Target opponent loses 1 life."
1/2
Pyrrhic Engineer R
Creature - Goblin Rigger
When Pyrrhic Engineer dies, assemble a Contraption. It is an artifact token with "Sacrifice a Contraption: It deals 1 damage to target creature or player."
1/1
Highland Landshaper 1G
Creature - Elf Rigger G, T: Assemble a Contraption. It is an artifact token with "Sacrifice a Contraption: Add 1 to your mana pool."
1/3
Assembly Golem 4
Creature - Golem Rigger T: Assemble a Contraption. It is an artifact token with "Sacrifice a Contraption: Target artifact creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn."
0/5
I went with this design over sacrificing the token you want the effect of so that you could run multiple assemblers, but use up your contraption pool according to what you need - otherwise, it would be little more than just giving you those effects in an overly complex manner. This is the first cycle I created, but there would be more 'Rigger Lords' like Steamflogger, artifacts that assemble contraptions, and then other Riggers that provide more unique contraptions, such as milling or giving +1/+1 counters, but at additional costs to just the sacrifice.
The only issue with these is that the wording more states that you assemble the contraption, rather than the creature, which sort of goes against Steamflogger's wording. But, thats easy enough to fix. What do you think about this mechanic and what could be done to improve upon it? Specifically, do all assemblies and/or contraptions be limited to sorcery speed only?
