Alright, a few card ideas about a theme for a set of cards, all started with one spell I did awhile back for the Name Game:
Mana Ignite3RR
Instant
Split Second
Empty target Players Mana pool, ~ deals damage to them equal to the mana removed this way.
The Split second makes it actually viable, that way they can't just drain all there mana into something before the spell goes off.
Anyway, that was originally inspired by another creature/character I had, a possible Red/White or Red/Blue Legendary that... is a wizard that can't actually use magic, whenever he tries to, it... destabilizes and causes a bit of a small explosion, he can direct he, he just can't form spells... something like maybe...
Cardname, the Mana Igniter4RW(or 4RU)
Legendary Creature - Human Wizard
Whenever a spell targets ~, counter it, then ~ deals damage equal to its converted mana cost to the player who cast it. x,T, discard a card with converted mana cost of X: ~ deals X damage to target creature or player.
3/5
Slight Revamp:
Vitos, the Mana Igniter3UR
Legendary Creature - Human Wizard(Or Igniter)
Shroud x,T, discard a card with converted mana cost of X: ~ deals X damage to target creature or player.
3/5
Reason for the Revamp is to make it... make more sense a bit, and to make it more in line with how it is a lot like Knollspine Invocation on legs...
Once again, not that good I realize, but its something that I have been working on/needs more work.
Anyway, it lead me to the idea if... what if there was a sub-type or theme for a few creatures that were similiar, ones that can not use magic directly, but can cause it to overload and go way wrong. Like maybe:
Star-Stunted Outcast2(R/U)
Creature - Vedalken Wizard
Whenever Star-Stunted Outcast becomes the target of a spell, that spell deals 1 damage to Star-Stunted Outcast, then counter it.
1/3
Things to that effect... I wouldn't make it a keyword because its not something that would easily be changed to that...
There own mana abilities, say they are putting mana into it for an X spell or they are using something like Cabal Coffers and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, or any of the other many cards that put an excess of mana into your mana pool, or even just store it like Omnath, Locus of Mana. The Trick to using it really is casting it in response to them using the mana abilities.... though honestly I am not sure if that would work or be allowed, and for all I know it could just be a rules nightmare.

The problem is, you won't have priority while your opponent is tapping mana. It doesn't use the stack. That means you won't be able to cast your split second card before they use the mana to cast their spell...

Aww, didn't know that, see, that's why I didn't think much of this... though it still could work against cards that produce an excess of mana like the above mentioned examples, though it does make it far more limited.
How isn't Mana Igniter Legend's first ability just an overly wordy, complicated way of saying "Shroud"?
The "Spellshaper" ability is decently interesting, though.
I get that is basically shroud, so it is unlikely he will ever be targeted... I guess I should have just made Igniter have Hexproof or shroud, eh, I wasn't fully thinking when I typed this up though I guess...
I don't think there's anything wrong with the ability. Knollspine Invocation with legs is a fine rare. My only other complaints about it is 1) Shroud is not red, and 2) 3/5 is a weird power/toughness. Most red cards with more toughness than power have some kind of power-pumping ability... and most red cards overall just have equal or less toughness than power. I think just making it cost 3UR would fix both remaining problems, if you're fine with making it multicolored.
Mana ignite doesn't really work, unless your opponent is doing something like spamming dark rituals and such, and even then you have to cast it before the penultimate spell is cast.
At a 5cc instant, this is hardly usuable. Hell, I'm not sure its usable at 2cc in standard (which doesn't have rituals). At 2cc it might be a somewhat decent sideboard against some combo decks in eternal.

Indeed, though I am not sure how else I could apply similar abilities... I could make it a psuedo keyword like Shroud, but instead of just straight up denying spells targeting them, spells that do target them just deal 1 damage to them instead.... *Shrug* It was a silly idea anyway.

Any opinions on the idea?

That may be so, but is there any problem with that? There are plenty of other cards that are... Enchantments or Spells on Legs.

... that is actually... a lot better wording, so thank you.

Yeah, that it doesn't make it particularly enticing as a design. At best I'd shrug.
Here, considering it has both shroud and A LOT of toughness, I'd say there's a problem with that too.
The Star-Stunted Outcast is far more interesting. It should probably have a more aggressive body to go with the "drawback".
