absolutely nukes control. should probably be fixed to hit players only, and should trigger on each player's end step so you receive it first as a down payment. plus, opponents can more easily play around it. otherwise it will be banned just like Black Vise.
CARDNAME 1R
Creature - Insect
At the beginning of each player's end step, ~ deals X damage to that player, where X is the number of cards in that player's hand.

Of the cards in this thread, my favourite as a johnny is:
Volcanobreaker Mystic1R
Creature - Human Shaman
Instants and sorceries you cast from your hand have buyback 1R. (You may pay an additional1Ras you cast this spell. If you do, put this card into your hand as it resolves.)
2/2
however, it probably won't find much use outside combo/EDH decks. this is still a strong card, but less applications generally in aggro decks or streamlined ones.
Spellslinger1R
Creature - Human Shaman
When you cast your first instant or sorcery spell for the turn, return it to your hand as it resolves.
2/1
this fixes the problem of buyback feeling like a non-red mechanic (although it could essentially be worded to include buyback 0). it also makes it efficiently-costed enough to see play in every format by giving free buyback to the first spell you cast each turn (still combos with time warp :P)
however, does it feel red enough? is it too good?
Name 1R
At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, ~ deals X damage to target creature of player where X is the number of cards in that person's hand.
2/1
I dont even know how to start poiting how broken this is...
Mogg Squadron1R
Creature - Goblin
Haste
Resonate (When you cast this spell, you may cast any number of cards in your graveyard with the same name without paying their mana costs.)
2/1
Fanatic Gambler 1R
Creature-Human Berserker
Haste, Trample
Whenever ~ deals combat damage to an opponent, you may sacrifice it. If you do, each player discards his or her hand and draws four cards.
2/1 "Sure, I'll spin again."
It's not broken, but in the right deck it is super powerful. It also fits into a lot of decks, which is an important piece of the other two.
CARDNAME 1R
Creature - Insect
At the beginning of each player's end step, ~ deals X damage to that player, where X is the number of cards in that player's hand.
1/1
Waaaaaaaaay too good, I think.
Volcanobreaker Mystic1R
Creature - Human Shaman
Instants and sorceries you cast from your hand have buyback 1R. (You may pay an additional1Ras you cast this spell. If you do, put this card into your hand as it resolves.)
2/2
Broken in half. Some spells just shouldn't have buyback.
Spellslinger1R
Creature - Human Shaman
When you cast your first instant or sorcery spell for the turn, return it to your hand as it resolves.
2/1
Make it CMC 3 or less and you are closer to something... but I still think this is a worse version of my Spellsinger, design-wise. You can spam a counterspell forever with this guy out.
Crazzed Pyromancer
Creature - Human wizard (R)
At the beginning of your upkeep exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a red instant or sorcery spell. Until end of turn you may cast that card as though as it were in your hand.
2/1
Doesn't work as you'd draw that card after the upkeep, so it's kinda weird and prevents you from ever drawing land.
That being said, something along the lines of Countryside Crusher's first ability wouldn't be too shabby.
no Crazed Pyromancer does't prevent you from drawing as it exiles the card instead of leaving it on top, so you still get to draw anyway
anyways, i think spellslinger is better than volcanobreaker...spellslinger gives your first spell free buyback, but that's usually enough anyway. if anything i think spellslinger is broken in half. all the good instants/sorceries in legacy are 3 CMC or below anyway (save Force of Will and Natural Order), but i can see putting that limitation anyway to prevent time warp combo. time walk is a different scenario....vintage is bonkers anyway
Dwarven ore-finder 1R
Creature - Dwarf
When CARD enters the battlefield, exile target land.
When CARD leaves the battlefield, return the exiled card to the battlefield under its owner's control. "Id rather die than let someone enter MY gold mine!"
2/1
dat card...i think i'm in love
i wish this were legal now so i wouldn't have to face stupid Cavern of Souls all day
so many shenanigans with all the flicker effects in the next set!
1R
Creature - Human Shaman
Whenever ~ attacks, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile an instant or sorcery card with converted mana cost 1 or less. If you do, cast that card from exile without paying its mana cost.
2/1
i like it because of the randomness that is so natural to red. you're forced to cast whatever you reveal, even if it means that the swords to plowshares will hit your own guy.
Mana-Crazed Gobo1R
Creature - Goblin Shaman
When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, reveal the top two cards of your library. Cast any instant or sorcery spells revealed this way and put the rest on the bottom of your library.
2/1
Dwarven ore-finder 1R
Creature - Dwarf
When CARD enters the battlefield, exile target land.
When CARD leaves the battlefield, return the exiled card to the battlefield under its owner's control. "Id rather die than let someone enter MY gold mine!"

Um, no. Land destruction this is easy is way over the top.
Mana-Crazed Gobo1R
Creature - Goblin Shaman
When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, reveal the top two cards of your library. Cast any instant or sorcery spells revealed this way and put the rest on the bottom of your library.
2/1
Bloodrage Shaman :symr::symr:
Creature - Elemental Shaman {R}
Haste
When Bloodrage Shaman attacks, gain control of target creature until end of turn. That creature becomes tapped and attacking.
1/1
May not be worded correctly, but it should get the point across. Like the other 4 OP creatures, this is good throughout the entire game.
Whenever goblin gambler attacks shuffle your hand into your library then draw two cards.
2/1
OR
Acolyte of thunder1R
Creature - Shaman (R)
When acolyte of thunder enters the battlefield you may search your library for a card named lightning bolt, fireball or pyroclasm, revealt it, put it into your hand then shuffle your library.
Stormrite Evoker and Spellslinger have to be my favorite so far, but why not join in on the fun?
Flamekin Mystic 1R
Creature - Elemental
Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery from your hand, ~ deals 1 damage to target creature or player.
2/1
This feels too focused on burn however (and as I don't play burn, I don't know if it's too strong), whereas the two I mentioned above can be in a variety of decks. Unless the incremental damage would actually be useful in controllish builds.
I'm not sure if it's too focused on burn because it's stupid how few mechanics red has. It's all about doing damage to creatures or players and that's about it. Before, they had some land destruction but now it's very rare. What else? They are getting looting now. Is that it? Meanwhile, the other colors, specially blue, have tons of different mechanics and abilities representatives of those colors. Red = damage, haste, first strike, looting, bad dragons.
Player's can't gain life.
At the beginning of each player's upkeep, Sulfuric Vortex Dude deals 2 damage to that player.
2/1
or
Erratic Pyromancer1R
Creature - Human Shaman
At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, that player reveals the top card of his or her library. Erratic Pyromancer deals damage to that player equal to the converted mana cost of the card revealed this way.
2/1
or
Threaten Dude1R
Creature - Human Shaman
Sacrifice Threaten Dude: Untap target creature and gain control of it until end of turn. That creature gains haste until end of turn.
2/1
or
Chaos Mage1R
Creature - Human Shaman
Whenever a spell or ability an opponent controls targets spell or a permanent you control, flip a coin. If you win the flip, you may choose new targets for that spell or ability.

This guy is very strong candidate. Totally abusable in certain decks, but generally good in every deck. Seems to fit the cycle well.
The only other card here that's jumped out at me as very viable is the cascade guy. In order to bring him up to the power level of the other guys, I'd make him like this:
~ 1R
Creature - Human Wizard {R}
Haste, Flash, Cascade
2/1
Yes, I know he seems crazy good, but consider him without flash trying to match up against the rest of the cycle.
~ 1R
Creature - ??
Haste
~'s power and toughness are equal to the number of instants, sorceries, and lands in all graveyards.
*/*
^ hates on blue. Powers itself. A bit of that land stuff...
Alternatively:
Tectonic Undertaker 1R
Creature - Elemental {r}
Tectonic Undertaker gets +1/+1 for each land in all graveyards.
Tectonic Undertaker has landwalk of each of the land types of all lands in all graveyards.
0/0
Neither of those are anywhere near balanced. Terravore is considered good and fully playable in Legacy, and has double colored mana in a color that Legacy does not love.
1R
At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, ~ deals X damage to target creature of player where X is the number of cards in that person's hand.

If you can't count fire and lightning as friends, he has none.

I'm sure 2 mana cost cascade creature has been done before, but I think this would definitely be on par with the "Big 4".

Prefer Zakaroth's version from above, this is a little too easy to abuse. There's a reason WotC didn't print any 2 mana cards with cascade...
Okay, this is broken beyond belief. It goes something like this: turn one Ponder, turn two this and Dragonstorm/Cruel Ultimatum/Din of the Fireherd....you get the picture.
Have to say that Crazed Pyromancer (Boros Dimir, post #36) is my favorite, if probably a bit too powerful as well.

Represents G for them having big creatures.
Snapcaster Mage -
Represents U for primarily wanting to cast spells...? Honestly shouldve been red.
Dark Confidant -
Represents B for power at any cost.
Stoneforge Mystic -
Represents W for having weenies and giving them equipment for them to use
So what does red do?
Loots
Copy Spells
Direct Damage
Prevents Blocking
Haste Creatures
Primarily goblin tribe
So.. What i would like to see if it had a battlefield ability ala Stoneforge Mystic and Snapcaster Mage.
