I had an idea for a mana artifact that simulates the use of phybrid mana. To make 2 life for one mana worthwhile though would require dropping it at a really low mana cost.
Phyrexian Ring1 Artifact (U?)
CARDNAME enters the field tapped. T, Pay 2 life: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
A little more balanced would be to step away from 2 life and make it an artifact-shift of City of Brass.
Phyrexian Signet2 Artifact (C?) T, Pay 1 life: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
Phyrexian Signet is pretty much exactly Phyrexian Lens, a rare from Invasion. Phyrexian Signet is much better, obviously, but given the Len's cost and rarity, I might wonder if its too powerful.
Phyrexian Lens is obsoleted by cards like Darksteel Ingot and Coalition Relic. It's not necessarily a reliable benchmark for mana-artifact power level.

:2mana:-cost artifact = equivalent land seems to be a good benchmark in the majority of cases. Applying that to City of Brass would roughly lead to Phyrexian Signet above. Not sure how that would test but it looks okay to me.
Not to threadjack, but on the topic of converting lands to artifacts, what about converting legendary land to nonlegendary artifact, would you say? Phyrexian Tower for example, to stick within the Phyrexian Mana theme.
Considering that Phyrexian Tower probably wouldn't be broken if it weren't legendary (as compared to, say, Gaea's Cradle), I'd think it's fine at 2 as well.
My question is if this card is even playable in general. The mana excelleration is neet, but Magic did away with pain lands because they were considered confusing to new players.

It depends on the environment. It is probably not a core set card, but it could work in NPH where dedicated infect decks sometimes make your life total not even matter all that much. It is also pretty good color fixer for casual formats like commander where you start off with a lot more life.

We also had the general realization of Mana Prism -> Prismatic Lens.
Mana artifacts have generally been getting more playable over the long run and are well positioned around 2 depending.

(Probably NSFW) So you may have heard I'm trying to write a TV series...
