There's not actually a good reason to massclaim names, or if there is I don't know it; I asked it because there wasn't a good post to jump on to start the game, and asking that question always makes one.
when I forget to put it in the post and put it in the next one instead does that count against my "forgetting to sign off" limit? Because I'm in trouble if it counts.
Crafters suggestion and explanation are good. TA's reaction is good. Brigade's is not. EDH's, though, is non-existant. But thank goodness Bur asked for an updated post count. Very "Helpful Townie".
@gen: you were "amused" that H_H took issue with the claim suggestion. But did you find it suspicious?
My opinions?
First of all, I find it really interesting that Crafters decided to open the discussion with softclaiming roles instead of many other ways to open the game. While their explanation afterwards was solid, they still gave me vibes...
Regarding Brigade: I still haven't made up my mind regarding them. I would like to hear more about them, before I decide anything regarding them.
Like it was said, I would like to hear ANYTHING from Flamingos. They have only one post ("confirm") and while they might have issues with their real life, I'm kind of starting to think they are just lurking.
And if it's not too much asked, I'd kindly request everyone to have some kind of avatar/signature. I keep mixing up Tolarian Academy and Family for this reason.

Can you explain why you think Bur was trying to be a "helpful townie"? I know what you mean by the phrase, you don't have to explain that part of it, only the why.
Seriously? My obvious breadcrumb was seen as a refusal? Lol
And did you seriously ask why I was so aggressive? I am signing these posts arent I?
If you feel my pressure is unwarranted, why such a soft push back? I'm accusing you of being scum for a few things, you appear to have not addressed a single one of them. Has H_H been put on the naughty step for the slip?

It was names, not roles. The difference is the first one doesn't really help, while the second can be used to narrow down the scum.

Them? I think you mean 'him'.
Cos I'm all on my own, I wasn't even ready to take on another game, but Iso asked for a volunteer and nobody else bothered to respond. So you are stick with me. Miserable as **** and ready to take it out on you lot.
And the best part is I have nobody else talking to me in the family hydra chat. Not one.
And if I'm the only one who understand the basic concepts of scum hunting like 'players trying to link other players on day 1' or 'ignoring the argument to push suspicion back on the accuser' then no wonder simply handwaving it away as ' shoddy' worked.

Dat defensiveness.
Anyway, Family has been largely defensive and aggressive. He's whining about being "miserable as **** and ready to take on you lot," telling people "never to bull***** a bull*****ter," etc. That signal to noise ratio is impressively high. I still don't know what his reads really are. He's there, he's taking up space, but he's not really doing anything useful. In fact, Gen, what exactly was it you intended to accomplish with that little rant post of yours? Were you trying to fish for sympathy? Were you hoping people would take you at face value? I just don't get it.
Despite the push on me, I think Crafters is acting pretty townie right now. He's engaging people in asking actual questions. Only things I'm left wondering are this: What's your other scum read? And are either Academy or EDH also scummy for asking for an explanation?
Academy: So what are your reads, anyway? You're certainly unsure of yourself, but are there any reads at all you can commit to? You have "no idea" what The Family is, you can't say whether you think I'm town or not, and you don't really have any opinions on anyone else.
EDH doesn't really have a whole lot going for him post-RVS, and I'm not a fan of 44 like Gaymers are. "Interesting" is one of those weasel words that makes it sound like you're giving thought to something, when you might not actually be. How was Crafters' mass softclaim idea interesting? What gives you pause about their gameplay after that?
I'll need more from Gaymers and Flamingo before I can really comment on them.
Family is my strongest scum read right now, then Academy.

I'm protecting Academy by saying they're one of my scum reads?
As far as why I'm saying your reads are unclear, there's so much anger in your posts that it's hard to follow what's supposed to be actual scumhunting and what's just you blowing up at people. There's applying pressure, and there's snapping at people because of a bad emotional state. If you're going through a rough patch in real life, then I really do sympathize, but what you're doing isn't helping at all. I'll rephrase my above questions: How is what you're doing helping us? Where's the town motivation in snapping at people constantly?

@Generic: I'm not going to put up with you defending being a dick with RL issues this game. You went into this game knowing full well that you had the RL issues in advance, but you still decided to play mafia even though you knew you were going to be in a poor state of mind for it. I'm never one to judge for RL issues when they occur midgame, but going into a game with it? No, I'm not accepting that.
If you're going to play this game, fine, but I'm not going to take the ***** you're wanting to dump if that's the excuse. Bully the Family a bit and get someone else to play for the clan if your RL situation is a hindrance.
That said,
@Everyone: I'm very certain Generic is town. Read a Generic game, the things you're pinning him as scum for are, in fact, Generic's natural tendencies as any alignment. I say this because I don't want the game to get tied up at Generic's feet rather than actual scum.
Because your phrasing was weaselly (specifically the use of the word honestly).

Academy and EDH are the other two I'm looking at for scum. Despite that, neither of their posts looking for an explanation from me were inherently scummy.
Regardless, you're actually being clear about reasoning which is more than I can say about most.

I will not attempt to respond to bur on the question as to why he said it seemed "interesting." However, I will discuss the accusation on Family of being scum. While being blatantly aggressive, I have to wonder if scum would be so open about their colors. The tells are there, but if he were scum would he make it so obvious so early? I don't think so. I think it's possible he is indeed an irate player that had his hand forced into a game and is a bit salty about it. However, I don't find it scummy, to be forced into a situation and then left alone to defend yourself is a hard position to be in. Sure he's being loud and letting off a lot of noise but I find it justified. Not particularly pleasant, however, I don't find it scummy in the least.
As for Crafter's voting for us I'd like to see some reasoning behind it. You claim that our asking for reasoning wasn't scummy, however, you still chose to vote for us. I will argue that while Bur's feeling of who might be scum wasn't particularly well detailed it also shouldn't be considered scummy at this point in game. We are only on page three so while there has been a little bit of discourse it is still hard to pinpoint who falls where in the scum/town spectrum. I would argue that at the moment it is justifiable to have to rely on a bit of your gut, at least until there have been more posts.
I too am looking to hear from Clan Flamingo, but I think that the issues at hand are enough to start conversation. I don't find there to be any reason to jump to conclusions this early when we're all fishing for any possible hints. I personally will not make an all in decision until more information presents itself.
I can't say anything about Generic's play style, since I haven't played with him. To be honest, I haven't played mafia ever over the internet. I'm playing this game based on my real life experience, so some of my logic might not apply here even though it applies at my meta.
Like Wheat asked from my if "confusing = scum?", it has worked in real life in my experience.
And anyways, here's my opinions regarding everybody:
Flamingo: ??? (Possibly lurking -> scum?)
MTGBrigade: Confused, not really experiensed at mafia and therefore playing bit poorly.
Crafters: Clear about everything and has opinions, not afraid to voice them. Calm and collected, knows what they are doing. Least likely scum IMO.
Gaymers: ... not much to be said. Seems to be the type to jump bandwagons, probably town. Would like to hear more of him.
Tolarian Academy: I'd like to hear more of him. Seems a bit wary of others and he comes across to me as either unexperienced town or good mafia player.
The Family: Seems like an usual case of aggresive-mafia -playstyle. However, if he really is as experienced as you claim, I doubt he'd pull that playstyle so poorly. Besides, he apparently has RL-issues, so...
But, I'd like to everyone to tell if you guys have any experience with mafia. That'd help me analyse things a bit more.
Oh, and I'll come clear about these things: 1) I'm not native speaker. Most of the time if I say "I don't understand" I don't mean the logic, but I the phrase/euphenism makes no sense to me (and internet is not helpful most of the times).
2)I don't play this game by logic. I play this game based on my gut. And I suck at logical stuff. However, I'm better at reading people by their gestures, tone of voice and such things (which I can not use in internet-mafia, sadly).
Oh, and I'd like to check something. Please say, who do you think is the LEAST likely mafia.
I will not attempt to respond to bur on the question as to why he said it seemed "interesting." However, I will discuss the accusation on Family of being scum. I stated your reasoning in that singular instance was not scummy, first off, not that you weren't scummy overall.
As far as why you are scum: I wasn't sure myself when I made the vote. That's why I pointed it at you without explaining it.
The one that made me start wondering was:
First of all, I find it really interesting that Crafters decided to open the discussion with softclaiming roles instead of many other ways to open the game. While their explanation afterwards was solid, they still gave me vibes...
Why is it interesting, what are the other ways to open the game, what sort of vibes are being had?
The other post was his post #52 which said he felt Family was scum but had no real reasoning, and more importantly for his alignment, showed no real inclination to come up with any reasoning or ask questions which would lead to such reasoning.
The post I quoted at the very start of this post (post 67) is what seals it for me. It reads of being choosy about what is being said, carefully constructed so as not to read out of the ordinary. That's a scum mindset more than a town mindset, as town don't really care what they look like so much because they're more focused on finding the scum.
In addition, there's a lot of prose about not jumping to conclusions while fishing for clues, but I don't see much fishing being done in all that.
---
Current reads:
Family: Strongest town read
Gaymers: Moderate town read, I need more to be certain though because Kraj is a veteran player.
Flamingo: Needs to post pretty badly. Where are ya, Proph? Or Meg? I hope Meg shows up, I like Meg.
Tolarian Academy: Mild scum-read but I've misread Polski in the past. Need to hear more.
Brigade: If truly scum, I will catch him/her (can't remember Teia's gender) eventually because s/he is putting out posts.
EDH: Scum, as I laid out in this post.
Why is it interesting, what are the other ways to open the game, what sort of vibes are being had?
1) Since I first misread is as "softclaiming roles" not "softclaim names".
2) My favourite one is to claim mafia and see how people react to it.
3) I felt you were being scummy (before my misunderstanding was cleared).
Anyways, I'd still ask you: Who do you think is the LEAST scummy person around here. Crafters answered and they helped me a lot, I thank for that.
Academy: So what are your reads, anyway? You're certainly unsure of yourself, but are there any reads at all you can commit to? You have "no idea" what The Family is, you can't say whether you think I'm town or not, and you don't really have any opinions on anyone else.
Your barnacle to start things off is one of my thoughts, I can tell you that. As to my opinions, opinions were hard to come by before recently.
"Dat defensiveness"? You then question what gen's emotional state is, then you admit you know why he's getting like that. Come on, what were you really prodding him for? Family is your scummiest read? Apparently lurking and weaselling are a-okay by you. You think you look like you're paying attention but your post 61 is as void as gen's post 58. What's the actual reason you addressed him?
Lurking and weaselling I don't like. Flamingo, post an opinion. Spirit of EDH, why do you defend Family in post #67? Why do you want to tell us how to play?
I too am looking to hear from Clan Flamingo, but I think that the issues at hand are enough to start conversation.
Why this astronomical degree of doublespeak? Why emphasize you "too"?
What is the purpose of talking about who is Town-like?
Gaymers, is Brigade now better- or worse-looking than Spirit of EDH?
~H_H
My defense of family is simply my read on the matter, I'm not attempting to tell you how to play. I am giving you the logic behind my decision that his actions weren't particularly scummy to me. Do you disagree with my assumptions? Are there any reasons why you do that would help me get a better read on family at the moment? If so I want to hear them so I can better play this game.
That's simply how I speak, whether in game or in life. I assure you I have no hidden motives, however, I am new to this game. This may cause me to act abnormally to what is considered town-like. This is due to my lack of experience with the game. I realize now that trying to be impartial and deduce things for myself makes me look more scummy than town, I wasn't aware that it was unnatural. I was also unaware that it is common to be aggressive in fact seeking. I'm not an aggressive person, I like to analyze things from a distance but I realize that won't work here now. Instead, I'm drawing suspicion that while may seem warranted if I were an advanced or veteran player. However, I am new to this and assume that this would be a blunder of new towns trying to dip their toes in the water.
Saying that, I will respond to your assertion of doublespeak. I just wanted to point out that I am also interested in the silence of Clan Flamingo. I continued to say that we have enough to start conversation, this was just an observation. I realize now this statement was unneeded since people are indeed responding, thus it is obvious that conversation will take place.
As for talking about who is town-like, I feel that in order for me to properly deduce town from scum I have to take every bit of information, scummy or townish as important. I voice my opinions on town behavior because I feel it will be beneficial when time comes to lynch. Even if you do not find the information valuable someone else might.
My current reads are as follows:
Family: Leaning town on this one. Him being a veteran would lead me to believe that he wouldn't act blatantly aggressive. Family knows this would draw attention to them and I don't believe scum would do that so early.
Crafters: Most notably the strongest town player in the game currently. Wheat asks the questions people want answers to and is confident in his answers. I do want to ask the reason for your phrasing when refering to brigade "If truly scum" you will catch them. If you have an inkling that they are possibly scum why not say it? You say you will know sooner or later because they post often, however, if they're good scum couldn't they be participating as a ruse?
Flamingo: Without any posts I can't evaluate their position.
Brigade: Mildly scummy. Often participating and engages Family often. Almost tunnel visioning on Family. I'm not going to call scum yet but I would like some reasoning other than his outburst. Was there anything you found in his phrasing or prose to be particularly scummy? Or is your assertion he is scum strictly due to his aggressiveness early on in the game?
Academy: Leaning town. Pushes for answers, however I'd like to hear more form you, you ask plenty of questions but I'm not getting much information in return. I'll need to see more from you to make a stronger read.
Gaymers: Unsure. With one post it is hard to determine where gaymers sit. The singular post did make some blanket statements about peoples reaction being good and others being bad. However, no explaination was given. Where do you stand now gamers?

Though given the time this game started, I'm going to be V/LA until after tomorrow because of an exam.

-Kraj
~Bur
Who do you think is scummy right now?
Can you explain why you think Bur was trying to be a "helpful townie"? I know what you mean by the phrase, you don't have to explain that part of it, only the why.
-Wheat
~Bur

Also apparently I can't post links until 5 posts.
Reasons?
Dat defensiveness.
It was names, not roles. The difference is the first one doesn't really help, while the second can be used to narrow down the scum.

If you're going to play this game, fine, but I'm not going to take the ***** you're wanting to dump if that's the excuse. Bully the Family a bit and get someone else to play for the clan if your RL situation is a hindrance.
That said,
@Everyone: I'm very certain Generic is town. Read a Generic game, the things you're pinning him as scum for are, in fact, Generic's natural tendencies as any alignment. I say this because I don't want the game to get tied up at Generic's feet rather than actual scum.
So confusing = scum?
Because your phrasing was weaselly (specifically the use of the word honestly).
Have you ever played with Generic before?
Academy and EDH are the other two I'm looking at for scum. Despite that, neither of their posts looking for an explanation from me were inherently scummy.
Regardless, you're actually being clear about reasoning which is more than I can say about most.
Time to stir over the rest of the pile.

~Human
~Bur
I stated your reasoning in that singular instance was not scummy, first off, not that you weren't scummy overall.
As far as why you are scum: I wasn't sure myself when I made the vote. That's why I pointed it at you without explaining it.
The one that made me start wondering was:
- Wheat
1) Since I first misread is as "softclaiming roles" not "softclaim names".
2) My favourite one is to claim mafia and see how people react to it.
3) I felt you were being scummy (before my misunderstanding was cleared).
Anyways, I'd still ask you: Who do you think is the LEAST scummy person around here. Crafters answered and they helped me a lot, I thank for that.
~Bur
-Wheat
