The mafia have infiltrated your small town. They are looking to gain control of the town by eliminating any who would stand in their way. What do you intend to do about it? The best course of action is to band together with your fellow townies and eliminate the mafia threat, but you have one nagging doubt. . .
Who can you trust?
Here are the rules:
All votes and unvotes must be in bold.
A majority is required to lynch. Once a player reaches majority, unvoting will not prevent the lynch.
There are no set deadlines, but I may impose them if it appears necessary.
No posting in the thread at night. If need be, I will ask that the thread be locked.
No communication outside the game unless your role allows it. Otherwise, no discussion of the game outside of this thread.
If you die, a "goodbye" post is fine, but do NOT include any extra information about the game in your post.
No editing or deleting posts. No posting in invisitext.
Double posting is okay (your posts will be merged) for adding important information, but spam and unnecessary double posting still will receive warnings as per the forum rules.
No quoting any PMs from the mod. Paraphrasing is acceptable.
If you will be gone, please inform me in advance. I don't expect the game to be long enough for this to be a problem.
The Players

2. feuerdrache
3. Puchik
4. Treigit - mafia, lynched Day 2
5. d24478667 - cop, "blowed up" Night 1
6. live_vibe - mafia, lynched Day 1
7. Silver_Seraph
It is now Night 0. (There will be no night actions on Night 0; however, the mafia members may talk amongst themselves.) Once all roles have been confirmed, dawn will break and bring Day 1. But what does the day bring with it?
In the small mountain town of Newbville, the town elders gather to discuss a rising problem: murder in the town. Among the seven councilmembers, it has become apparent that the killers not only reside in the town, but are two the town's leaders themselves!
Each day, the town will meet to discuss which of the seven elders is among the members of the Mafia, sent by higher powers to take control of the town. If the Mafia members ever have equal control of the town (that is, the number of Mafia is equal to or greater than the other members of the town), all hope will be lost. For example, if there are 2 Mafia members and 2 Town members, the town loses. However, if the town manages to lynch both members of the Mafia before that happens, the town wins!
To save the town, the council has come to the decision that one member of the council must be lynched each day. To achieve this goal, discussion will be tossed around until the town can come to a majority concensus as to who is to be lynched. Voting is dynamic; each member controls one vote, and may move their vote as they see fit. Whenever a member of the town has a majority of the votes on their head, the lynch will occur immediately; no further changing of votes or discussion can change this.
Well, how do you suggest we go about discovering the Mafia?
We have no weapons at our disposal, save for the ability to kill someone today... someone who, unless we choose wisely, will be one of us.
Should we miss a lynch, it's 4-2, and 3-2 after the night, and then then one wrong lynch loses it. More information is needed ...
I am going to interject here for just a moment. . .
I HIGHLY suggest everyone look through at least a few pages of one of the games either here, on mafiascum.net or on misetings.com. This will be VERY HELPFUL in generating strategy and for learning about helpful tools like a FoS. (FoS stands for Finger of Suspicion. It's like voting without voting.)
feuerdrache: a completely 'meh' post. He could be a mafia posting randomly, or a townie trying not to draw attention to himself. I'll defer my judgement.
d244: a very suspicious pair of posts. First, he posts essentially nothing, then votes for me for no reason whatsoever. He could be a Mafia trying to organize a bandwagon or a highly misguided townie, or ... maybe he has a lofty plan which I fail to grasp. I'll wait for his explanation. Oh, wait, he did post for the 3rd time, and declined to explain. FOS: d244
Me: I'll let someone else analyze my posts.
live_vibe: an attempt to make some sense. Too early to tell if he sounds like Mafia or not.
From what I've seen on the other threads the best way to start is just to get everyone talking and go back and forth with wild accusations until something convincing comes up. Unfortunately I have no random accusations to make at this time
First vote someone and when he FOS you you unvote him?
Thats bizarre... (Even though you could just random voted someone, which is, well, pretty random)

Ohh-kay. Although I do find d244's behavior rather suspicious, there's no need to lynch anyone just yet. I would like to get off his case and have more people talking and stating their opinions before we do anything decisive. If nothing of value comes up, we can always come back to d244 later ...
Hello town. Random vote: Live_vibe because I couldn't random vote in random mafia. I have no experience with this first day thing (luckily for me no one else does either). It seems especially bad in a basic game like this where there isn't anything unusual to discuss.
Chamber's soon to be patented game predictions:
1. chamber – Town (duh)

3. Puchik – Mafia
4. Treigit - Town
5. d24478667 - Mafia
6. live_vibe - Cop
7. Silver_Seraph - Town
In light of my predictions I will Unvote and then Vote: Puchik because mafia suck and lynching our cop would be bad.
(This is completely random fun and none of it should be taken seriously (accept that part about me being town that’s definitely true))
Seraph, I'm not sure how serious you are, but I'll assume you meant what you said.
Under normal circumstances, I agree d447's actions would look incredibly suspicious, however this early in the game when some people hadn't even posted yet (as of his writing, I think we all have now). Random votes, fos's etc while not neccesarily productive don't really indicate anything.
In light of my predictions I will Unvote and then Vote: Puchik
Ok, you're clearly trying to run a red herring up the flagpole and see who will bark*. I won't dignify this with a response.
Now, speaking of chamber's predictions ... how do we even know there are a cop and/or a doctor in the game? I would assume we need to have one (without them, it's too easy for the Mafia to win), but not both - seems to make the Mafia's job too hard.
Of course I have no experience in a Mafia game design, so could be wrong.
Anyway, what do you think? Do we have a doctor, a cop, or both?
If you read some of the links that LJustus posted on the first page, mafiascum.net states that a 'newb' game has a cop/doctor/mafia/townies. And I see 3 metaphors (impressive).

1 Editing is very bad 2 it’s not necessary that we have 1 cop and 1 doc but it is most likely. I have seen noob set-ups with 2 cops and no doc, and ones with 5 basic town and no power roles at all.
The problem is that there is no insurance that what you say you did is what you did. A benefit to playing on a forum as opposed to in real life is that there is a hard record of what everyone says. Ljustus will most likely let you off with a warning, but avoid doing it in the future
There will be no more warnings. No editting, deleting posts, or posting in invisitext. The next violation by anyone will have to result in a mod-kill. I'd really rather not have to do that, so let's keep it clean guys.
I was glancing at one of the other threads, and there were 3 mod kills in one day, so apparently they take this kind of thing seriously.
Also:
From the sign up post:
Don't worry though townies, you will have weapons at your disposal during the night as well. A cop will patrol the streets. It is the ability of the cop to send in a name of a person he would like to investigate to the game mod during each night. The investigation will yield that player's true allegiance. The town will also have a doctor. It is the doc's night job to send in the name of one player he would like to protect from danger during that night. This is a very powerful ability - especially as the game progresses.
There are more roles available, but they will not be used for this game.
That last sentence implies to me that cop and doctor are guarenteed for this game (I don't think LJustus would pull a fast one on us in a Newbie game)
PS I've never used quotes, before, so I hope I used that right, if not could someone tell me how to do it?
Statistically speaking, I suppose d2247 is right, I suspect the majority of players (4 in this case) will die before game ends, but do you have any other reason for your pessimistic predicitons.

So, we have a doc and a cop in the game. And the big question is, should they come forward and state their identities? In my opinion, yes and no, in this order.
Let's say we decide the doctor should come forward and roleclaims. Now, the mafia have a choice: to roleclaim a fake doc, or to let it be. If they choose the former, we lynch one of the claimants today and the other one tomorrow. A 50% lynch success rate is pretty good. We do well in this scenario.
If they choose the latter, we have one confirmed innocent, and today's lynch has a slightly higher chance of success. But, you want to ask, won't the mafia immediately kill the doc during the night? They might, but, having revealed himself, the doc will probably want to protect himself at night. Not wanting to waste a nightkill, they'll kill a random townie instead. Again, we do well in this scenario, since we increase our chances of a successful lynch today, and at night lose a random townie - something that would have happened anyway.
Now, about the cop. I don't think the cop should claim until he found a Mafia. For the time being, he should lay low and investigate. Claiming "I am a cop, I have investigated Joe Blow and found him innocent" is really unproductive, since we won't know what to believe - maybe they're both innocent, and maybe they're both mafia working together.
Claiming "I am a cop, I have investigated Joe Blow and found him guilty" is much more productive, since it, again, gives us a 50% lynch rate regardless of whether the cop is real or not.
So, any opinions, guys?
PS: THIS IS NOT AN INVITATION FOR IMMEDIATE ROLECLAIM. DO NOT ROLECLAIM UNTIL THE ISSUE HAS BEEN DISCUSSED.
interesting analysis, but i don't really think we should do it yet, since for a lot of us this is the first mafia game ever. (i've played in real life before.)
Well, that depends on how important the doc is. When he can prevent a Mafia kill, he WILL probably the target of the Mafia when he claims his role.
And to your scenarios : What happens if a false doc ''claims'' first and the real doc don't want to claim his role now because he has a good chance of not surviving till' sunset, or just because he thinks (or, it is) his role is too important to get lynched on day 1.

If the false doc claims first, the real doc should claim as well. Otherwise we're stuck with a 'confirmed innocent' who isn't really innocent - and that's the worst scenario. Especially in a short game such as this, where we can only afford 1 wrong lynch.
It doesn't matter in which order the claims are made. The bottom line is that: a) We must all decide whether the real doc should claim or not, and b) Mafia should decide if they want to claim a false doc.
If two people claim doc, we lynch the one that looks more suspicious today (not necessarily the one who claimed last!). Should we fail, we lynch the other tomorrow. Thus, over two days, we're guaranteed at least one correct lynch and have a sporting chance at two correct lynches. Sounds like a good odds to me. Trading mafia for town on a 1-for-1 basis is usually good, and here we even have a 50% chance at 1-for-0.
Which is probably why the mafia will decline to false-claim doc.
With only the real doc claimed, we have a 33% chance at a correct lynch today (up from 28% normally). The doc may or may not survive the night. It's a mental game between him or the mafia. He's most likely to protect himself, so the mafia should hit someone else, right? Well, in that case, he can take a risk and protect someone else... but then the mafia should hit the doc... or is he protecting himself after all?
Also, I must say I am intrigued by feuerdrache's post above. He's rejecting my plan "because we are inexperienced players". What kind of logic is this? Either this plan increases our chances and we should do it, or it decreases our chances and we should reject it. Rejecting it "because it's our first game" sounds strange. FOS feuerdrache
Some very interesting points, unfortunately, I think it's ultimately up to the (real) doctor if they wish to reveal themselves (same with the cop - but I think that's generally a bad idea).
My opinion on the subject is for people -not- to roleclaim. However, this will most likely change as more people post on the subject.

Vote : Puchik For horrible logic. The doc coming forward is a very bad idea. You assume the doc can protect himself, in most cases the doc CANT protect himself. Normally if he can its with a draw back, this being a basic game I expect the doc to not be able to protect himself. I would say the cop revealing himself is MUCH better though still a horrible idea. In that case we get 2 confirmed townies and the doc can protect him from the cover of the other innocents. Really that looked like a bad Mafia ploy to get the doc to come forward. You should have read other games before taking part in this one, thus i expect everyone to know such things.
You assume the doc can protect himself, in most cases the doc CANT protect himself.
It doesn't matter if the doc can protect himself or not. The point is, the mafia do not know it. Thus, my point stands, even if revealed, the doc may or may not survive the night.

Do some research I’d be willing to bet the doc can’t self-protect. Any scum who has read some games would find out the same thing. If I were Mafia I would attempt to kill the doc without any hesitation.
I was given the role of a doc in one game (from which I had to withdraw as early as day 1 for personal reasons), and I could self protect. Sorry, I'm not buying your logic.
Before we can strategize about the Doc Role Claiming we need to know one thing. Can the doc protect himself? I've seen some where they can, some where they can't. Unfortunately (unless I missed something in the setup) only 2 people know this: LJustus, who may or may not clarify this for us at this point, and The doc, who if he can't MUST keep silent, and if he can possibly still might want to keep quiet. However, before we know this speculation on the advisibilty of a claim is pointless.

Even if the doctor could self-protect and they came forward, mafia still have an advantage: they can kill of other townies while assuming the doctor will self-protect. If the doctor does decide to protect someone (randomly or not), the mafia still have a percentage to kill the unprotected.

The more he posts, the more I agree with you. Also did anyone see his unedited post? The claim that he edited just to remove a seems suspicious even if he didn't know it's not allowed. FoS:d24478667
PS Sorry for my habitual use of the male pronoun, partly a demographic observation, more an assumtion that people here won't understand 'co'.
Let's not reveal our roles (except mafia ;))
