Want to follow the action? Check the bracket link HERE! Commanders will be updated into player names as they are reported!
Greetings once again, Duel Commander players! It’s finally time for the third online DC Cockatrice tournament! Apologies for the delay at getting this out here. The changes to 20 life complicated scheduling things but since we’re settled in now it’s time to run one with the current metagame!
Since I had intended to run one for the Kaladesh release but did not, I’ll be doubling down on the prize support for this event. Some of the cards are still coming to me in the mail, but I’ll be updating the prize support section daily or bi-daily (depending on US mail) leading up to the start of the event.
I’ll start off with the big guns first to generate HYPE: WHAT COULD IT BE?!
Yes folks, that in fact is a LP Foil Linvala, Keeper of Silence. That will be going to first prize! But there’s more… stay tuned for those reveals
1st Place: (Foil) Linvala, Keeper of Silence and (Foil) Yawgmoth's Bargain
2nd Place: (EMA Foil) Necropotence and Sanctum Prelate
3rd Place: (EMA Foil) Balance and Concealed Courtyard
4th Place: Grindstone :^)
Highest Placing Non-Blue deck: Russian Foil Bowl Island
Alright, now we all need to go over the boring pseudo-legalese to make sure that this event runs as efficiently as possible. If there are any questions, clarifications or concerns about the event, feel free to post in the thread highlighting any details or whatnot I need to address. Thank you!
READ THE RULES - IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO FOLLOW OR UNDERSTAND THEM YOU RISK DISQUALIFICATION AT MY DISCRETION
Updated Rules:
Double Elimination over Swiss Rounds! I’ve finally cracked how to use the challonge interface with DE. There will still be a ‘hard’ round time limit of 1 week. However, with Double Elimination, players can see their own pairings in real time and can play their matches whenever the opponent is ready.
Match Scheduling: Every players MUST be active and responsible for reporting their wins/losses and scheduling their matches. I will endeavor to update the match results every day at 1630 (-5 GMT) so that they are as accurate as possible.
Refer to the following image for an example: Example Bracket
In this example, player #56 has advanced to the third round by defeating both opponents. They are under no pressure to complete a match until either player #17 or #23 advance. For example, if player #23 wins their match, they should immediately post in the thread to give a timestamp of when the match was completed (for a ‘1 week’ deadline). Additionally, they should send player #56 a PM right away to start trying to schedule a match.
Like previous events, if there are difficulties scheduling, both players need to contact me via PM to so that I can verify that they are both active. With Double Elim, if I’m able to confirm both players are at least active but unable to find a day within a week to complete their match, they will be given a time extension. If I do not hear from one player within that week time frame, they will be disqualified and their opponent given the match win.
SUPER IMPORTANT: Upon completion of a match on cockatrice, PLEASE come to the thread and report results, whether you won or lost. Validating the results is extremely important. We cannot afford to have matches that were completed, but neither player reported the results. Unreported matches can clog up the entire system. I’ll be issuing Disqualifications like candy for players who fail to report results in a timely manner (~1 week). There are no draws in Double Elimination. Which leads me into…
No Intentional Draws allowed. It’s impossible to do so in Double Elimination. Players will play to the best of their ability to complete their matches. No attempting to rules-lawyer ID attempts. Those attempting to draw will be shot (DQ’d). Survivors will be shot (DQ’d) again.

Deck Construction
-Except for cards in the banlist, Duel Commander is an Eternal format. Cards from every set in Magic’s (black or white bordered, sorry UnSets!) history are legal.
-99 card library, entirely singleton except for Basic Lands. If you are playing with two ‘Partner’ Commanders, your main deck should be 98 cards.
-Commander Card(s). These card(s) start in your Command Zone and can be cast at any time that the card could legally be cast.
-20 Life
-Vancouver (aka ‘regular’ Magic) mulligan.
-Each time you cast a Commander from your Command Zone, they cost (2) more mana to cast FROM the Command Zone for each time that they have been cast in this way.
-If a Commander is placed into graveyard, library, exile or hand, they may instead be placed into the Command Zone as a replacement effect. (NOTE: A card must go to graveyard for it to have considered to ‘die.’ If you have an effect that matters when your Commander dies, they must go to your graveyard instead of Command Zone for the ability to happen.
-To determine who goes first, roll a die. The winner gets to choose to be on the play or draw. The player who goes first does not draw a card on their first turn.
-Matches are played on a best-of-3 games basis. Please report scores as such. (Example: Player A 2-1 over Player B)
Cockatrice and Tournament Rules:
-You must register your deck Hash (which can be found in the deck editor, it’s a small section above the ‘maindeck’ line) with me and on the thread. I do not need your full decklist unless you make it into the Top 8.
-You cannot change your deck during the duration of the tournament. You may change your decklist all you would like before the tournament, but once the official tournament starts, you are locked into using the deck hash posted in the thread. Changes after that time will not be accepted. You risk game/match losses or disqualifications for participating with an incorrect deck hash. ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK YOUR DECK HASH BEFORE SUBMITTING!
-The event will be run as a Double Elimination Event.
-You are not obligated to reveal your commander in your sign up post until after the first Round has started.
Conduct Rules:
-When creating a game in Cockatrice, make sure that it is clearly labeled as such and is under the format ‘EDH/Commander.’ Do NOT allow hands to be shown to spectators, but do allow spectators to view the game and chat. In this way, any replays can be saved and shown in case of any disputes or rules issues. We do not, however, want players to be given information regarding their opponent’s hands. I implore everyone to not give nor be okay with receiving outside assistance during the match. I obviously cannot stop this from happening with spectators allowed but I would rather have the ability to have witnesses to any illegal play OR rudeness to one’s opponents than deal with someone backseat gaming in a free online tournament.
-Being rude to your opponent will not be tolerated. This tournament is being run for the enjoyment of its players. I have a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding this. You may curse your luck, your deities and forces outside of your control with the force of a thousand fiery suns, but you will under no circumstances direct this at your opponent. Anyone caught breaking this rule during the tournament will be automatically disqualified. Obviously, some situations are up for debate but I’d like to think that we’re all adults here.

Remember to post all of this information in the thread when signing up for the event. If you update your deck hash, DO NOT post again, merely update your initial sign up post. If you do not post in the thread publicly confirming your participation, I will not add you to the roster.
I'm interested too. But, why not use XMAGE instead of Cockatrice????? It's far better...
EDIT: All the triggers are automatic, and you can't cheat in any way.
Hi! As far as I'm aware the largest DC community exists online in cockatrice. For another tournament it's possible to switch to xmage but I don't want to change the format for this one now.
I haven't had any cheating problems previously, and I'll be requiring Top 8 decklists anyway so I can confirm each hash. There's realistically no reason to knowingly chest if you intend to win a prize as your deck hash will speak for you
EDIT: I've added everyone who has signed up so far. Check out how the bracket looks on Challonge! It will only get more complicated as players sign up B) Note that pairings are not final and will change before the start of the event.
Hi everyone! Everyone signed up so far has been updated and added to the documents. Make sure to include a timezone NUMBER in your sign up - we're all in UTC or GMT, but the useful information is WHEN
Prizing update! Sergey Lamzin (Loxmatii) has donated an addition prize to the prize pool! Check out the opening post for the image His condition is that the highest placing non-blue deck receive it. From Russia, with Love
Hello everyone! Everyone who has signed up so far should be updated correctly. Be sure to check my documents and the bracket to make sure that it is correct
Additionally, we have another prizing update! The 'main' prizes for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place haven't come in my mail just yet but they should be in soon.
