I wanted to see what people thought about this. On MTGO, the banlist that is used is the one for multiplayer. Makes sense.... however, 1v1 uses that banlist too. I have no played dual commander before but I do follow the updates, changes, ban/unbanned cards.
I do have games were the person who starts land+sol ring+2CMC mana rock get to 5 mana on turn 2 can really just push that person way ahead. Or you/they play Edric which can be an unfair commander due to massive CA.
TLDR:Not sure what exactly my point is, but it seems as if the 1v1 games on MTGO using multiplayer banlist can make lopsided games more often than not --- depending on the commander used, card choices, and opening hands.
MTGO could easily incorporate a system wherein players can create their own formats, vote on ban lists, starting life totals, mulligan rules, and so forth. Unfortunately, it's barely able to handle regular Magic. I don't expect it to change anytime soon.
It's unfortunate to continually run head-on into Edric, Spymaster of Trest. To me, the best solution is to just right-click concede and tell the person to come back when they actually want to playMagic. Because Edric is like Dredge - we're not playing conventional Magic anymore.
My favourite is the mono-U deck with t1 Island > Sol Ring > Sky Diamond and they wonder why you scoop. Like, durr, really? Broken most powerful colour with three turns of mana ahead on t2, like I'm gonna beat that?

50/50% of the time, they will auto concede to turn1 Serra Ascendant.
I have had sol ring + mana rock turn 1s and the same thing happen to me. Sometimes it can be an uphill battle.... but if the mono U player is out drawing me earlier along with them having a mana rock+mana rock+ mana rock start....sometimes not worth it.
I don't want to be a dick..... but sometimes I have to run these cards in order to have a fair fight.
For sure. And it sucks that this is the only way to stand a chance. But then it alienates the others of the playerbase that don't have those and just feel overwhelmed.
Yeah, there's a reason there's a duel commander format, and all thsoe broken T1 plays are banned ^.^ I would recommend just playing on cockatrice if you want to do some real 1v1, and going with the duel commander banlist. The games are a lot more fair, a lot more enjoyable, and the community is infinitely more supportive. I won't step foot in MTGO, it's just a cesspit of people with no regard for common courtesy or decency :/

I prefer it for the lack of rules disputes as the client takes care of all that for you. Better than, oh what was it, I think Surging Chaos had it sigged for awhile. unlike with cockatrice where this happened;
Surging Chaos: Stated based effects will put the creature in it's owner's graveyard before a player gets priority.
Dumb Player: Maybe they do that in your state but not in mine.
<System> Player Lost
That's paraphrased, but I remember that sigged for a while. It was hilarious.

Are you serious? You already played 3 cards while I still have a full hand of 7 cards and you think I will scoop? Surely not. The only way that 1 turn ramp is good is if you have something like Frost Titan in your hand. What are the odds of you playing 3 mana spells on turn 1 and then still having something really great to use all that mana for? Oh, you play a bunch of really good 6-cmc spells? Okay, what do you do when you don't draw that Sol Ring? You just lose?
You need consistency. I don't care about a turn 1 Serra either. It's legal in the format I play and I have all the tools to beat it. I can beat a turn 1 Crypt, Workshop, Gilded Lotus into Copy Artifact into Thran Dynamo too, even if you still have Kozilek in your hand. I hope for you I don't cast Null Rod or Shattering Spree on my turn, because you will have a hard time to recover from that.
I was all-in on the FR banlist earlier but I'm starting to learn that the US banlist, when played against other decks built to win, is more than decent. It is completely false that a turn 1 Mana Crypt wins you the game and I have to be the first to admit that's what I thought before.
My own rules when building a Commander deck:
1) Underrated general that I can build around but the deck must work without him/her too.
2) Every card must be legal in both banlists.
3) No infinite combo that could win (and ruin) instantly a multiplayer game.
4) Synergy at all costs; stay on theme, avoid goodstuff.

As long as you don't play Living Death or any other cards that just break the client where commander is concerned, right?
I mean, you can always ask in the chat room for someone to clarify a rule. And there's usually spectators in tournament matches who can verify as well. Neither system is perfect obviously. Looks like we both have good reasons to avoid the other ^.^

I'd rather deal with a few of the bugged cards, than morons who think their interpretation of the rules are correct when they aren't.
