The castle complex isn't only above ground. The foundations for its massive walls and towers run deep, and some of them have their own residents... The lower levels of some towers are off-limts to the recruits; they might contain extra provisions or weaponry or gold, but they might also contain prisoners--or worse, those who deal with the prisoners. Not all the undeground areas are so forbidding, though. Recruits who weild daggers can find their peers training in a set of tunnels known as the Dungeon of Daggers. It's lit mostly by torchlight, and it's filled with twisting passageways and cramped rooms that simulate well the conditions of a city at night. Some of the chambers are well-lit, and recruits can learn more open knife-fighting under experienced officers--but most of the dungeon is designed for rogues to practice moving around and fighting in the dark. The dungeon is accessed by a spiral staircase beneath one of the outbuildings. Those who enter should be cautious; it's very easy to get caught up in someone else's training down below, and the results of that tend to be unpleasant for everyone involved.

When Harn exits the staircase, he sees a large room. As le looks around, he sees that he just exited what looks like a tower in one corner of it. The room is large and vaulted, so the ceiling looks dark and murky--much like a night sky. On one side is a welcoming-looking doorway with light spilling over the threshold, but around most of the other edges he sees only darkness.

As soon as Harn's shadow crossed the threshold, a knife flew past his ear--but it didn't hit him, and he heard the sound of someone being hit inside. When he looked inside the doorway, he saw a huge man--on the ground, nursing a bruise. He also saw a rather smaller man, who looked at him appraisingly.
"Sorry about the dagger," the small man said. "Thunn here is still much too skittish with his blades." He looked at the huge man on the floor for a moment, a little scathingly. Then his gaze returned to Harn. "We can teach you about daggers down here. recruit. I'm Jherei, and I try to keep this place in order." He extended a hand.
