Hello all, I was checking in into mtgtop8 and I stumbled upon this odd combo deck. After looking at all the cards, I'm still not sure exactly this deck functions/wins. Any Ideas?

I watched Kahleya's replays with that deck. Pretty impressive stuff; he went 4-0 and didn't lose a single game over the entire Daily. His game plan appears to be use Plunge to dig for either Shadow, Avatar of Hope, or Rites of Consumption. Avatar can block an entire army and buy time, and Shadow/Rites is a two card "kill" combo, as long as your life total is low enough. Very cool list overall.
To me, the game plan looks like you want to dig for Death's Shadow by using spoils of the vault and plunge into darkness. The life loss clause means that shadow hits the table on turn 2 or 3 as a 8/8 or so. After he's in play the win con would be to beat face a couple times or to essentially fling him at your opponent's dome with Rite of Consumption. The rest of it just looks like combo protection to me. It looks really interesting to pilot and I haven't seen the combo before.

Interesting, but it seems a little slow? What's up with the multiple leyline of sanctity mb? Is this meant to combat targeted discard and burn, or am I missing something?

Turn 2 or 3 8/8+ is not slow.
Leyline is so you don't randomly die to a lightning bolt.

I actually built this yesterday (I actually had most of the cards) and tried it. Yeah, it's tricky, but it can work. Actually, Leyline of Sanctity causes a lot of people to immediately fold.

Things WotC cares about:
-making certain Standard cards can be played in Modern, therefore increasing their value and increasing WotC's profit margin
Things WotC does not care about:
-keeping the ban list as short as possible
-taking chances with an entire format for the benefit of a single card
-catering to play styles that newer players generally don't like and will lose them more players than it will gain
-keeping the meta balanced between archetypes/colors/whatever
-keeping cards on the secondary market cheap (available yes, but not cheap)
-keeping the meta diverse (as long as a single deck doesn't threaten the popularity of the format)
This is actually a old Legacy deck from last year. The guy piloting started 5-0 and then lost his win and in rounds at the SCG open it was played at.
I've seen more fast mana in the deck and less dig spells. It's madly inconsistent though.

In case I didn't tell you, I don't care about your opinion I just want your facts. And not the facts that make you seem smart. I want the ones that are actual facts.

How did you watch replays? Can you link them for me? I was under the impression that replays had all been disabled

They are disabled. I watch them in the client within 12 hours of the event. It's pretty tedious and needlessly difficult, but sometimes you get rewarded by seeing something awesome like this deck in action. There's no easy way to do it, and no way to see replays older than 12 hours.
This deck is insane. Spoils of the Vault is such a risky card. I tried playing the deck against a friend (piloting Jund, so basically we really put it to the test) and the first two games I killed myself with Spoils, one game from 14 life and the other from 17. But I beat him the next two games. Plunge is definitely the card you want to be casting on turn 2, then ideally winning on turn 3 or 4. Beginning the game with Leyline in play just hoses any B/x or R/x player.

Yep, it's meant to combat Discard and Burn so you can meter the flow of damage by allowing or disallowing creatures attacking you

Okay, I've played about 20 games with this deck now, so I can make some observations.
First, the inconsistency is annoying. Part of this is MTGO, which causes mana flood/screw a lot.
Second, a lot of the cards become useless after a few turns. If you don't win by turn 7, you won't win at all, because you'll keep drawing cards that require you to pay life, and by now you've gotten yourself down to 5 life or less.
Third, creature removal is a huge problem. Getting one creature is extremely common with only 9 in the whole deck, and if you can't protect it, you may not see another.

Um, what? MTGO does a much better job of shuffling decks than most human players. I'll grant you that this deck seems particularly vulnerable to mana flood and screw, but blaming instances of such on MTGO seems a bit disingenuous.

I just watched Stealthypants stream this deck. Looks half decent. I figure it's pretty threat light with a total of 8 creatures, but with this deck you really only need one to get there.

That is a really interesting idea. If you can stall long enough to get your third land then Unlife could be useful. Though the list seems so tight-nit and perfect. I can't imagine changing even a single card.
Isnt pact a critical card in this deck? Allows you to destroy the blocker for free and then swing with shadow. Idk though.
So with unlife you can swing with shadow, then spoils for something like a brain pry to mill your whole deck and go way below 0 for a 1 hit of like 30 to 40 damage. Interesting
Did anyone else notice the lack of fetchlands? Now, the deck's demands for mana are pretty on part with eachother needing 19 black mana and 18 white mana in the MB. Now, would it be a bad idea to add in 2 more white and 2 more black fetches?
So this deck is called Angel Plunge now? The angels are barely a part of the deck.

i would guess that the "angel" part is from Angel's Grace.
on another note, this deck looks really fun but very situationally good..its almost like you either win big or lose bigger. what is the quickest you could win with this deck?? turn 3??
T1 - Fetch for shock (17 life) into Spoils of the Vault and get lucky (hopefully be at 10 or less) for something you need (either shadow, grace or rite)
T2 - Land for turn, play shadow with 1 up for grace or shield

The original creator of the deck calls it Post Grace, I believe, and WotC lists it under dailies as Take the Plunge.
And yes, I've won turn 3 with a god hand. Why the deck only runs 2 Rite of Consumption I'll never know. I personally took Spoils out because it kept killing me, and put in two more Rite (since that was the card I usually was looking for) and some Dismember (to lose life and remove blockers). The deck is very inconsistent.
Faith's Shield has a big advantage over Apostle's Blessing: since you are going to be low on life, it's Fateful Hour rider kicks in, meaning it protects you as well. Being able to shrug off 'target player' effects is extremely powerful, and the fact it can protect multiple creatures under the same circumstances makes it even better.

What about Phyrexian Unlife? It allows us to always cast Spoils for dig, and it makes Death's Shadow BIGGER than 13/13 so a single Rite can finish them off. Thoughts?
Built a deck for legacy years ago all about that interaction. It's in my signature down there. However I wasn't really good back then, and I've struggled to find a way to make it work in modern. What are your guys thoughts on Dark Confidant in here?
I have been testing and I feel the deck doesn't have enough library manipulation and selection, although Bob costs 2, he also helps with your life loss early on. Perhaps he will be too much of a liability when things start to get going?
