This has been discussed on a number of topics, but I think it is time for its own thread.
Fox news and their pundits condemnned countless people for 'not supporting our President', being 'un-American for questioning the government', and have switched countless other 'ideals' since Republicans became the minority party and Obama won handily in the November 2008 election.
A few recent manufactured outrages include trying to demonize the 'Czars' and get them all removed from their positions. They were successful with Van Jones, and are currently talking down 3 or 4 others. During the Bush administration, Bill O'Reilly advocated for Bush to get more Czars.(video)
Another HUGE manufactured outrage is ACORN. In the election, some indivuduals were found to be registering false names for new voter registrations. Despite the fact that you need ID to vote, and 'Donald Duck' isn't getting to vote, FOX attempted to push this as proof that Democratic groups were trying to steal the election.
Here is what Glenn Beck was talking about last night, to 'tease' the latest ACORN story. Going to go out on a limb and say he is overreacting:
BECK: America, I have to tell you, I'm going to be real honest with you. I am -- I'm afraid for the future of our country, because I think they're taking us in a direction that most people are just -- they refuse to look at. But I'm optimistic because more and more people are waking up. And these people are so arrogant in Washington. They'll -- I mean, they'll just end up tripping up and exposing themselves and destroying themselves.
I am honestly concerned for myself and for my family because I'd sure like to have some more friends here in the mainstream media -- you know, on NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN -- spread the news here on doing some actual investigating and telling people the truth. But until they do, we'll continue to tell you the truth as we know it.
Tomorrow -- tomorrow, things change. I think things change a lot for those in power. The tides are about to turn, and that will be on tomorrow's broadcast.
Trust me. Everybody now says they're going to be talking about health care. I don't think so. Tomorrow you will see an exclusive -- stuff on tomorrow's program. Don't miss it.
The most recent anti-ACORN thing doesn't even compute.
A conservative group set up an undercover camera sting at 6 or so offices of ACORN, where a man and woman came in posing as a pimp and prostitute, asking workers for help on how to avoid the IRS. One of the locations (yes, only one) had the worker give them the advice they were looking for on how to cheat taxes.
What this has to do with anything that ACORN does, I don't know, but we should be outraged because Glenn Beck and FOX says so.
FOX should be talking about this all day, not healthcare, something that will actually affect Americans.
Yes, this thread is mostly about Glenn Beck, but also about the massive hypocritical shift FOX news has made just because they are (officially) the minority.
Before anyone posts 'but media is all about manufactured outrage', I realize, but FOX is the only network that reports on many of these outrages, and FOX is the impetus of some of them, as they originate in the minds of their pundits.
We can only hope shepard smith gets some of them to act better,
He's possibly the only guy on there I've ever seen act like he actually cares, as opposed to glenn beck and, who John Stuart enjoys pulling out pre-fox clips and comparing the two, how his stances are wildly different now than just a couple years ago.
What's the point of talking about healthcare on FOX? Most of the viewers already know that a) they aren't interested in the Obama plan, b) nothing reasonable is being proposed, c) others who have proposed plans get ignored or accused of being part of the "No" movement.
What exactly will be accomplished by regurgitation health care discussions that have already been had? At some point this is like beating a dead horse.

No, I am just failing to see how it has as much importance as FOX news is giving it. Remember, it was two conservative filmmakers that were doing the 'sting'. Law enforcement hasn't even been involved, and nothing happened in 5 of the 6 locations they attempted this at.
FOX has given up on health care because they know they will be called out by the Obama administration, as the President promised, should they report more inaccuracies and falsehoods about the plans.
This thread is about FOX manufacturing outrage, amping up things to be much much much more important than they actually are, because they are reporting things noone else would care enough to report about.

Its hard to poke holes in a bill that is so loosely worded that any claim can easily be refuted by saying, "yeah, but that's not how we'll do it in practice."
Many of the claims that have been made about the bill are not untrue, but they're not true either. Its just a game of politics as usual.
I agree that on the face the ACORN story is not a big deal, however providing a continual reminder to viewers about the shady things that ACORN does is a good thing as it helps to provide clarity between what Obama says, and the actions of organizations he's been associated with. At some point people are going to realize that he couldn't have possibly associated with all these groups/people with widely divergent viewpoints from what he's saying now. Either he's lying now, or he was lying to them then, or he's undergone a massive shift in idoligy in a few short years.
I agree that on the face the ACORN story is not a big deal, however providing a continual reminder to viewers about the shady things that ACORN does is a good thing as it helps to provide clarity between what Obama says, and the actions of organizations he's been associated with.
If I rob a bank that action doesn't automatically mean the company I work for is in the business of robbing banks.
If anything the ACORN story shows that it's not common for their employees to be shady.
However it does show that the company you work for has questionable hiring policies.
I'm not saying it was common. It's just 1 of many sketchy things their associated with.
Bad seeds slip past every HR person at some point - without knowing how long the bad seed in question has been working for ACORN it's impossible to even make a statement like that. If they were there longer than 3-12 months it would be a testimony to their hiring policies however. (Or more importantly their disciplinary policies)
Not to mention, without actually watching the "sting" it's impossible to know if there was any blunt statement of what type of business he was in and/or how bluntly he asked about cheating on his taxes - has there been footage of it provided?
I ran a very strict hiring process including background and drug checks on every full-time employee I hired, and I still had a number of drug dealers/users slip through. And some sexually based dramas that were considered prostitution by the male half of the complaint that generally led to me letting both halves go. (Not to mention petty thefts - seriously I'd say at least 10% of my "clean record" full-time hires at some point had me give them a chat about not stealing from the store - generally small stuff that wouldn't get them fired immediately, but still a reasonable portion of those went for degrees that did get them fired - and occasionally prosecuted)

Yes, but not the entirety of the footage.

FOX News, from what I understand, was suppose to provide a balance to CNN. However, whatever balance was suppose to exist has been destoryed because of the unhealthy spin on news. There are two sides to every story, but ACORN is evil is probably not one of those sides, nor is Obama's speech to children an attempt to socialize them. I actually heard on one of their night shows some woman complaining because the president encouraged people to do community service on 9/11 (today). What is wrong with supporting our country with our hard work? Nothing, except that it was the president's idea. The station is a joke and should be changed to FOX OPINION Channel.

Despite the fact that you need ID to vote, and 'Donald Duck' isn't getting to vote, FOX attempted to push this as proof that Democratic groups were trying to steal the election.
This isn't true, at least not everywhere. In Massachusetts you do NOT need an ID to vote. I was actually under the impression that this was the case in most if not all states (And democrats, at least in the state, are AGAINST requiring a photo ID in order for someone to vote). I'm also not sure why there shouldn't be outrage over people registering false names; as far as I'm concerned that's treason (As far as I'm concerned, anything that undermines our government is treason including but not limited to falsifying votes like that and elected officials being for sale to special interest groups rather than representing their constituents).

"As this video confirms, ACORN continues to operate as a criminal enterprise."
My point stands, this seems like a completely out of left-field way to 'catch' ACORN doing 'shady' things...because I HIGHLY doubt they have had people walk in asking for advice on how to pimp discreetly.

The fact that they offer this advice, whether it is solicited or not, is disgraceful.

Wait, are you saying the Van Jones thing wasn't legit? Seriously?
I for one commend beck and fox for exposing these people to the public. Van Jones was not distorted in any way whatsoever - they just presented the facts, and CLEARLY the public did not want this guy anywhere near the president. Since none of these czars were properly vetted, I wouldn't mind a special like that on each one of them.

Actually, the public didn't really voice their opinons on this whole thing. Van Jones was distorted, as quotes were taken out of context, his signing of the 9.11 thing was overblown, (several other people had apparently signed it that were misled as to the actual contents) etc.
They had some ground to hold with complaining about him, but SYSTEMATICALLY attacking the remaining Czars is just ridiculous, especially the one from my original post, who never did anything wrong, they just took some quotes out of context and painted him to be a radical crazy person.

They had individuals with political motives and a goal to get results create a ridiculous scenario and go into a not-for-profit community outreach organization and ask for advice on how to cheat taxes?
Or did they make sure businesses were doing what they were saying they were doing, for the benefit of the country?
Not the same thing.
People are 'realizing' Czars are a bad idea because of FOX news, honestly, as they have existed for years and years, administration after administration. FOX wanted Bush to have MORE (he had more than Obama) but now wants them all gone under Obama.
I watched CNN's post coverage, and it wasn't negatively slanted, not sure what you were watching. They were trying to not get too overhyped about it, is the impression I got. There is a difference between being pragmatic and being negative.

Ummm...actually, both Special (Nightly) Report w/Brit Hume & Fox News Sunday w/Chris Wallace both routinely push their conservative guests when they get an illogical or blatantly hypocritical answer or some sort of deflection. Those two shows are actually pretty good at this. (Even O'Reilly will surprise you here sometimes..)
Those are the only two shows I watch on FNS and they're worth watching. The rest is pretty much partisan crap or partisan crap directed at geriatric audience, or tabloid.
The Beck stuff.. He is a clown and a ratings-*****, but he does promote discussion about things the administration doesn't want discussed. I'm ok with that becuase they've got some skeletons. As big a buffoon as he is, I could totally see him going after a GOP admin in similar fashion if a) they committed the same types of rank stupidity in non-congressionally-approved nominations and/or b) it would drive his ratings. I don't think he cares that much.
re: Speech. The speech was not controversial at all until Arnie Duncan's homework assignment made it a controversy. It had nothing to do with the speech at all, far as I know. Maybe the timeline doesn't support me here.

This type of "undercover sting" is the exact same thing that 60 Minutes used to do years ago and were applauded for.
Wizards could put $100 bills in packs and people would complain about how they were folded.

Maybe the timeline doesn't support me here.
re: Czars. Are a bad idea. They should go through the same approval process as cabinet members, or at least some period of public review apart from admin-managed vetting process.

Probably one of the most blatant liars on television. I'm glad people like Olbermann expose his nonsense.
