This set is in its planning stages so I'm wide open to suggestion and help.
In Magic each color has its own mechanical identity. Green is an aggro color, blue is control, various colors (usually involving black) are combo, etc etc. So what if colors were given game archetypes that they don't usually?
Right now, here's what I'm looking at:
White - The combo color. Yes, every color has gotten combo cards but it seems like white is the least likely to have them. Like I said though, this set is open so feel free to suggest a different archetype.
Blue - Definitely aggro. Give them counterspells to assist the assault, along with efficient (gasp!) cheap flyers and gigantic leviathans. Bounce spells get rid of blockers. I think this can work well.
Black - Not sure yet. I'm thinking black could be more focused on weenies (whereas blue can be more stompy-ish, focused on fatties). I have a few ideas for black creatures with alternative costs.
Red - Red is what I'm debating the most. I think making it a control color would be interesting, as red is not known as a control color. Burn and LD can stop your opponents creatures and manabase. Other than that I'm not sure how we can stop red from becoming a burn/sligh like archetype.
Green - Green would probably have to be a control or combo color as well. Control could work with Fallow Earth effects and the tapdown mechanic presented in Kamigawa. Green can get card-draw too.
So each color does something they aren't really meant to, all while staying in-bounds with the color pie. I think this could be an interesting set if done well.
I'm open to all suggestions, stories, cards, mechanics. Once something progresses we will start setting goals. I'll edit this post as more is developed.
Red can become the new blue. And by that I mean give red a bunch of command and Sideswipe effects, and maybe echo/CIP/LP effects. Maybe more Cracked Earth too.
You could give black a lot of freedom-based effects (since it's based in part on individuality) and maybe a kind of ascetic approach (bonuses for controlling few permanents of the same type). Since black normally has weenies, you should shoot for blue's Leviathans. One-shot, stompy creatures that suck if you run more than one copy. Maybe it could have an abundance of legends?
