I've been thinking about Phyrexian Mana lately and it's a very interesting mechanic I'd really like to see again.
But it could be expanded in a way that the amount of mana you actually pay with life changes how the spell works.
for example, you could have:
Phyrexian Greendude 2
Creature - weirdo
When Phyrexian Greendude enters the battlefield, put X -1/-1 counters on ~ where X is the amount of life you lost this turn, then fights target creature
7/7
Phyrexian Bolt
Instant
Phyrexian Bolt deals 3 damage to target creature or player.
If you haven't lost life this turn, damage can't be prevented.
I guess the cards aren't much balanced right now, but the concept of the amount of life paid to phyrexian mana could be very interesting.
what do you guys think?
Its a generally good idea, but these cards aren't balanced at all.
Phyrexian greendude is busted strong. I'm also not a fan of forced fighting. If you cast it on an open board, it will be forced to fight and kill itself. This is counter-intuitive, and unfun.
Phyrexian Bolt would approach being reasonable at a cost of 1
Another bit of design space available with phyrexian mana is to check the colors of mana used to cast it. Something like...
WhiteDude 2
Creature - [type]
First Strike
~ enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it if W was spent to cast it.
2/1
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.

I think, with Phyrexia, +1/+1 counters ought to be avoided on cards. So, WhiteDude would ETB with a -1/-1 counter unless W was etc.
On that note, though, I feel that cards with Phybrid mana costs should represent devotion to the whole of Phyrexia rather than to any (monocolor) faction. Of course, that hasn't been reflected in the Phybrid cards printed so far. Still, that is not a thing that could reasonably be reflected on WhiteDude above since given balance issues. Hmm.
Speaking of Devotion, I would like to see that mechanic used on Phyrexian cards in general. It would be most fitting.
