i don't think thats how a keyword ability works. someone correct me if im wrong but i think its always "whenever THIS happens, do -a variety of things". not, "whenever -a variety of things happens, do THIS".
the former makes it very easy to track. 7 cards in GY? threshold is good. land ETB? all landfall triggers. the latter makes it incredibly hard to track. at any moment, 5 different things could cause assemble to throw a token on the battlefield.
the reason its bad is because you have to read EVERY assemble card just to figure out what could possibly happen to the board. every attack becomes a long drawn out state of analysis.
You're probably right. The way I have it now is basically the inverse of a normal keyword, wherein a variable factor leads into a common result.
"Assemble" is just a catch-term referring to a Rigger's capability to produce a Contraption somehow, so that I could have a variety of ways to do so while still letting them interact with Steamflogger Boss. You can look at them all as separate cards like you would a field full of non-keyworded creatures, such as all the various ways there are to make Saproling tokens. The only time the Assemble term would really come into play is with the Boss.
It's not the most articulated idea ever, but I felt I'd rather get the idea down as a post rather than let it fester and forget about it, like so many of the others I've had.
Edit: Actually, the solution was rather obvious. Kinda sad I didn't think of it sooner. Fixed my initial post.
My boy, you've done it. This might be a bit of a prosaic solution, sure, and a lot of different X/X tokens with different X values might cause issues, but this is actually compatible with how Steamflogger Boss works if you just change the wording a bit.
Well, there are how many different Simic cards circa Gatecrash that produce X/X Ooze tokens? Granted, ideally, you'd be making more Contraptions than Oozes, but it shouldn't be too bad. Most players I know have more dice than they know what to do with anyway.
(Originally, I was going to make the Contraptions */* and have them always match the Rigger's power, but realized that'd probably be more finicky to keep track of. At least with defined P/T, you can keep your Contraptions organized.)
I realized that the Contraptions being based on power would make casting one-turn buff spells on the Riggers very potent, so I tried to curb it by giving the Contraptions a stipulation on their combat damage.
Basically, the Riggers build Contraptions. The Contraptions can run down creatures, but if they hit players, they generate mana instead of dealing combat damage, letting you play more Riggers. This mana is restricted to Rigger usage only.
To this end, I added a few spells of the Rigger type to accompany the mana.
Another solution to the memory issues of having many 'X' powered creatures at the same time is to make them 0/0 artifact creature tokens that enter the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on them. That also opens up design space for more contraption fixing/breaking/pimping because you have contraption 'parts' (the counters) to tinker with.
