I am going to attempt to intruduce a slight change in the way lands work. It is a minor cosmetical change to lands, but might make a significant impact for design space.
Land - Rule change is simpily this.
A card with the super-type "Land" always has T: Add to your mana pool.
A "Land" card that also has a sub-type refering to a basic land type, produces mana of the approprate type instead.
(Some of you rules guru's care to help me clean that up a little. I think I made it clear, but I doubt everybody will understand what I am trying to get at.)
I'll try to give you a few examples
Walking Trees
Land - Forest (T: Add to your mana pool.) 2GG: ~ becomes a 4/4 green treefolk creature that has trample until end of turn.
Circle of Power
Land (T: Add to your mana pool.) 1, Sacrifice ~: Add 2 mana of any combonation of colors to your mana pool.
Mana Syphon
Land
(T: Add to your mana pool.) ~ comes into play with 2 depletion counters on it.
T, Remove a depletion counter from ~: Add 1 mana of any color to your mana pool. Lose 2 life.
Wisdom Springs
Land - Island
(T: Add to your mana pool.)
XXU, Sacriifce ~: Draw X cards.
I think this gives you a basic Idea of what I am attempting to accomplish. G'night everybody.
i just feel that out there there's lotsa land that do not actually produce mana and some lands that doesnt have basic land type can produce mana that a forest or island can produce.. so i guess by making a supertype land -> t: Add 1 to your mana pool will make things more complicated.. erm this is how i felt about this idea so IMO the lands are good the way it is now so we wont get confuse with the older lands that's not suppose to produce mana and stuff..
Since this dramatically changes many lands (Vesuva, Kami block taplands, Dark Depths), this will not go forward. Just write ":symtap:: Add to your mana pool" out if you need it.
It's a bad idea. Alot of lands were created with the intent that they CAN'T produce mana (Dark Depths and Safe Haven). And, if it's that you want to save room on the card, you had to write the reminder text, didn't you? And if you do this for alot of custom cards, you'll have to explain it everytime. This is a change I would high advise against.

Unfortunately, the Domain cards now (did they also?) only count basic land types. Barry's would need to be made into an actual basic land type instead of just being a land with the basic supertype.
Well, there's a lot more empty space in a normal universe than there are "lands," so maybe the void can be a basic land type.
Introducing Magic 40k:
Verduran Outer-Colony
Land - Space (T: Add 1 to your mana pool.) 2GG: Verduran Outer-Colony becomes a 4/4 green Treefolk creature with trample until end of turn. It's still a land.
Space
Basic Land - Space (T: Add 1 to your mana pool.)
...or maybe not...

It's okay, because Dark Depths and Safe Haven don't have a super type.
Circle of Power
Land Land
(T: Add 1 to your mana pool.)
1, T, Sacrifice ~: Add two mana in any combination of colors to your mana pool.
Serriously though, lands having built in ability to tap for colorless mana takes away the drawbacks on cards like Dark Depths and Barbarian Ring.
What you want instead is not a change in the rules for the Land card type, but another basic land subtype:
Barry’s Land
Basic Land — Barry’s
(T: Add 1 to your mana pool.)
err... uh... ... yeah. But it doesn't have the super type "Land" as proposed by OP.
It was: The story of "Barry's Land"
It just didn't make it to print.
