I'm making a set... just like everyone else... Go figure...
Part of the set involves more modernish weaponry in the form of carbines, cannons, rifles, muskets, etc...
Most creatures will be armed with ranged weapons, and Originally I thought they could all be like Crossbow Infantry...
Unfortunately, two sides full of Crossbow Infantry wouldn't be very exciting...
Then I imagined it could be like a Laccolith ability, but then that doesn't see right...
Thus, I made an ability that would work as the creature is attacking. This way it could be like a World War I trench warfare where the soldiers attack, shoot, melee, then retreat...
Ranged X (During combat, before combat damage is assigned, if ~this~ is attacking or blocking, you may have ~this~ deal X damage to target attacking or blocking creature.)
That is the wordiest thing ever... I WANT to change it, but I don't know what to do... Please help...
And if any of you have a better idea of having more flavorful ranged weapons in game mechanics, please tell...
Oh, and I don't want this to be a Timmy ability... That's sniper territory... >:D
Ranged X (During combat, before combat damage is assigned, if ~this~ is attacking or blocking, you may have ~this~ deal X damage to target attacking or blocking creature.)
So after blockers are declared, it may deal damage to any attacking or blocking creature? Before even first strike? Here's my best try...
Ranged X (Whenever ~this~ blocks or becomes blocked, you may have it deal X damage to target attacking or blocking creature.)
I like the idea of victorian-era weapons. They touched on that concept in Portal 2, I think. I thought that was pretty cool.
Hmm... I think what you are going for is "Whenever this creature blocks or becomes blocked, you may have it deal X damage to target attacking or blocking creature." I don't know if you wanted the creatures to still deal their normal combat damage as well.
It's really a lot like first strike (actually it's probably more like double strike), but more versitile since you can target any creature engaged in combat.
Speaking of first strike... if you do use this mechanic or something similar, I would leave first strike out of your set. Having both mechanics in the same set would be a "conflict of interests," so to speak.
I thought of that, but wouldn't the timing get screwed up? Will the ability trigger before combat damage is assigned?
I want the ability similar to Flanking...
Timing wouldn't get messed up because of...
Quote from Comprehensive Rules »
309.1. As the declare blockers step begins, the defending player declares blockers (this game action doesn’t use the stack). Then any abilities that triggered on blockers being declared go on the stack. (See rule 410, “Handling Triggered Abilities.”) Then the active player gets priority and players may play spells and abilities.
Rule 309 covers the Declare Blockers Step, which comes right before Rule 310, which covers Combat Damage.
Ah... Topher, you're right... It never occurred to me that wording the abiity as you said would trigger as such... Thanks for the rules reference as well...
And Scuirimancer, I wanted the power of the creature to be independent of the ranged damage dealt... After all, a peasant with a pistol shouldn't be able to take down a beat in close combat, but ranged, maybe...
Also, this way the creature could shoot at things that fly... Unfortunately, it would also be able to shoot at things with Shadow...
And a final curiousity to everyone... Is this ability good? By "good" I don't mean powerful, but I ask is it too cheesy or bland or is it pretty good, versatile, and flavorful?... I'm planning on having creatures and enchantments that say "Whenever ~ would deal non-combat damage..."...

Yeah, I understand that. What I wasn't sure about is whether the creature deals its combat damage in addition to the ranged damage. For example, a 2/2 with "Ranged 1" becomes blocked. Does it deal 1 damage with its ability, and then 2 more damage to its blockers when combat damage is assigned? Or is it just one or the other? Right now, I'm thinking "one or the other" would be better. It makes sense from a flavor standpoint, and it keeps the power level in check.
I think this could be a great ability. You should definitely stick with it.

Yes... To take the WWI example, the soldier runs towards the enemy trench, takes a shot at the enemy with the gatling gun, then proceeds to attack another soldier with a bayonet...
The ranged damage is dealt first, then the combat damage is also dealt... Otherwise this ability would be no different than the Laccolith ability...

Well, it would be a little different. The Laccolith ability didn't work on defense. Laccoliths can mow down any creature in play. Ranged is limited to creatures engaged in combat. Also, like you said... the ranged mechanic is independant of the creature's power.

I understand the concept, but from a gameplay standpoint I think the mechanic would be more versitile and interesting if you had to choose between dealing combat damage and dealing ranged damage. If I'm getting on your nerves feel free to tell me to shut up.
With reference to bushido/double strike. Creatures with ranged ability might have high casting cost, else it would be too powerful as it deals damage twice to creature/s.
Is it only humanoid creature have ranged ability or an ornithopter can have ranged ability? :grin2:
Everyone has been telling me that it's better to have a choice between ranged damage and combat damage... I guess that works... New wording:
Ranged X (Whenever ~this~ blocks or becomes blocked, you may have it deal X damage to target attacking or blocking creature. If you do, ~this~ deals no combat damage this turn.)
I think I got the wording well...
Praetorian Infantry - :1mana::symw:
Creature - Human Soldier
Ranged 1 (Whenever Praetorian Infantry blocks or becomes blocked, you may have it deal 1 damage to target attacking or blocking creature. If you do, Praetorian Infantry deals no combat damage this turn.)
<1/1>
If Icatan Javelineers could cost and suck, this card can cost :1mana::symw: and be an okay weenie...

This is 'first strike' .. you realize that, right?
Well.. sort of...
EDIT - Oh.. I am late. It always helps to read the entire thread before posting. Sorry.
