Card Creation League The Last (June 2019)
Top 5 - Metamorphic Origin
Time passes, and things change. Though things had seemed constant for many years, a metamorphosis meant that the heroes would see more worlds, albeit in briefer glimpses. The very core of what they had known would be lost, but this would be an opportunity to reflect on the origins of their fellow planeswalkers, following the transformations in their lives that came about through the spark. And as timelines twisted, creatures with the power to change forms showed that change itself could change over time. With hindsight, we can tell that some of these monumental changes would proceed, while others would be reversed. What have the gathered heroes learned from the changes in their own histories?

We haven't been told explicitly to do critiques but everyone's posted and the deadline has passed so Imma do critiques.
Morph variant isn't within listed color identity. (Mono-Green)
Walker: This is going to be immediately taking over the game if you untap with him, but 2 toughness makes it just viable enough for stuff to get around indestructible to pick him off. on the flip it's pure gas, +6 power and trample is completely absurd, and his plus will always find you a dude if there's anything to find. Flavor is on point here as well.
Morph: I really like the idea, given how I took a similar line. That said, because of how turning instants and sorceries face up currently works with the rules the card as it stands today doesn't work:
Quote from Gatherer Rulings »
There are no cards in the Fate Reforged set that would turn a face-down instant or sorcery card on the battlefield face up, but some older cards can try to do this. If something tries to turn a face-down instant or sorcery card on the battlefield face up, reveal that card to show all players it’s an instant or sorcery card. The permanent remains on the battlefield face down. Abilities that trigger when a permanent turns face up won’t trigger, because even though you revealed the card, it never turned face up.
However if we assume that your mechanic was printed we also should assume the CR would have a corresponding update to allow it to work. As far as the card itself it's nice, but maybe a bit too nice - for your opponents anyway.
Both cards are within listed color identity (colorless)
Walker: This takes a bit of setup to really go live, but once it does you can really get some dumb things going. I do wonder if it's too prohibitive to get going though, seeing as you can't use artifact tokens to get the job done. Sure you'll get the artifacts back eventually...but is that too late to matter? He isn't flipping until turn 9 at the earliest, and 4 more turns to ult.
Morph: In interesting twist on bestow, where you can pump your team and not get 10-for-1'd by an untimely edict. It also makes it less favorable to kill the creature with the morphs on it, since they'll all flip. I think this is sneaky powerful and will be slept on until someone breaks it.
Both cards within listed color identity (Mono-White)
Walker: Naming is a bit too on point for my personal taste. Also most introductions to walkers use their full given name in their initial card, and I'm a bit sad to not see his family name (MTG Wiki says it's "Verada") on the flip side. As far as the card itself...you're going to have a really rough time flipping him safely, and even when you do he's...just okay, not really amazing. Would not exactly be thrilled to see this as a mythic in my pack.
Morph: "Geomorph" to me implies this mechanic cares about lands, not creatures. Even with a full field this is costing 5 to morph and flip, very often it'll be cheaper to just rawdog it unless you're really mana-pinched. The effect is cool and makes flavorful sense, but the card's just clunky all around.
Both cards within listed color identity (Simic). Submitted after the listed deadline, but there's been precedent for allowing entries a little late and you're doubtlessly busy juggling two sites' CCC loads. It'd be wrong of me to hold that against you.
Walker: Unlike Teyo we don't have any hint of family name for Tamiyo, so as much as I want to see a walker card with her full name we won't get it. Power-wise she's solid on curve, but there's no way to help herself flip built into the card, and 8 cards might be a lot to get to without help. Flip-side, making Ophidians has a lot of upside, and the ult is just back-breaking without being too hard to hit from starting loyalty. This is powerful, but not TOO powerful.
Morph: Going back to the suspend well, I see. That you can suspend it face-down turn 1 gives you a surprise factor that can really put some big things into play under the radar, and there's an obvious benefit to doing it this way. The card is fine, I really like the flavor and mechanics interaction, but it still feels...kinda clunky. Templating is also off for suspend's reminder text.

Eventide not only made a card outside the challenge criteria, but the morph card under today's rules doesn't work (and that's why I specifically worded my variant as a a replacement effect so the game never tries flipping the spell face-up and encountering that weirdness). Nice cards but an easy decision to put in the basement.

Eventide Sojourner - I don't like the concept of this Garruk. Why would I ever want to transform an 8-power indestructible trampler for five mana? The planeswalker half is, I suppose, fine. Mental Tremor is simply terrible - forget being worth three or four mana, it's not even worth one. Maybe you intended this to be "then each opponent discards two cards"? In any case, the effect is bad and "spellmorph" has been done to death imho.
Subject16 - Karn is a little uneven but I really like him in concept. I think he requires too many silver counters in order to transform (I think three would suffice, considering you have to exile multiple of your own permanents to get you there) and just being named "Karn" is... off somehow, but the planeswalker half and even the transform condition feel so much like time travel, and I dig it. Ambling Vatmother is perfect and perfectly bizarre and I want to know more about the set it's from, straightaway.
IcariiFA - This Teyo is a fine rendering of him with a few uneven spots in the planeswalker half. The prevention of damage to both you and him is genius but the defender removal in the +1 feels like pure trinket text in this context (he creates 0/3 Walls and not, say, 3/3 ones after all) and granting hexproof to permanents is still a bit of a color pie bend in monowhite, yet it feels very much in his "pure defense mage" flavor. I can't say I really "get" geomorph; the name makes it sound like it has to do with lands yet it's basically the morph + convoke variant. So, what gives on the ability flavor? The card it's on is fine but you do great Angels and this is certainly not one of your best.
Algernone25 - No p/t on the creature half but based on the sheer potency of that triggered ability I have to guess 1/1. I must say, Larceny for three mana would probably cause some blowouts, even if it's self-limiting. Davriel's +1 seems bothersome to tick up but the -X is a cool way to steal opponents' stuff even if it feels more like Ashiok's thing and that's one hell of a devastating ult. Soulcast feels new thanks to the life pay clause, even if that has, well, a tendency to be dangerous. I'd probably firmly place soulcast in black and red only. Endanger itself has a cool effect.
Yes please proceed. I'll look to get the final competitors determined and round posted on Saturday.
Sorry about the color identity Algernone I may be totally making this up as I go...
Well, I'm out for this month. Forgot about color identity, given how tricky a new morph effect is to concept in four days. Garruk was all about flavor (canonically, he's 8 feet, 2 inches tall). The minus ability was meant to illustrate him lending the strength he gained from his menagerie. Mental Tremor was meant to be a riff on Words of Wisdom. Everyone draws, opponents loot. It was off color, and I forgot to go back and change it.

May your games be chaotic and your decks be Rogue.
Eventide Sojourner: Garruk is a creature I'd want to play but not really flip. Even when I do get to flip him, I wonder why I havent won yet. Mental Tremor is more interesting for its effect than its morph. Also, challenge issues as you know.
Subject16: On its own, karns flip condition is hard. With other Karns it becomes more accessible. Not a terrible card if you ignore transforming it either. The cost of exile another permanent feels like a downer. Ult is neat, but probably best to ignore and just stick to the +2 to access cards unless you combo into his ult right away. Feels too slow due to the creature side. Vatmother would require some rules changes to work since face down cards are universally 2/2 creatures. You probably want some reminder text as to what happens when vatmother turns things face up (not attached). It also doesnt feel colorless.
Algernone25: I know what you were going for with the "If four" clause, but I think it needs to be worded differently to function. Also it has no P/T. His Planeswalker side feels really underwhelming. I wish Endanger was either paying morph cost with life, or dealing with instant and sorcerys, not both. It also changes morph in that morph doesnt normally look at CMC. It's confusing.
void_nothing: Tamiyo is neat, but I feel she doesn't help quite enough to flip on her own. Def constructed only and a tough condition to meet early. Her ult is interesting but doesnt feel like Tamiyo to me. Suspend morph has too many steps for me to like it. It's an inelegant missmash. The internal synergy of the card itself is nice though.
