If it had any of the following, I think it would be playable:
Trample
Lifelink
Deathtouch
Intimidate
Hexproof
Almost anything really. You cannot realistically get ~2 triggers out of him every time, so if he is being chumped he will never really net much of anything and there are no stats to make up for that.
Yep. Hexproof is really what would have pushed it over the top, as it would have fed into the "hard-to-kill" ability the counters give.
It doesn't even seem like it'd be that ridiculous considering the way the rest of the Phantom cycle was... and most of those came with an extra ability as well (pro-black, trample, lifelink).
While most of those carried a higher price, they also came into play full grown.
A big, hard to kill vanilla creature would at least be somewhat interesting, and this isn't even that.
This is just not good. Maybe there is some way it could be twisted. Maybe as a 0/0 that started with 2 or 3 counters, or if it border land rangered a land. Or even better if it let you play an extra land on your turn. Just meh to me.
This card is garbage without landfall, so im evaluating it as a four drop, which really really makes it bad. It reminds me of scute mob, a pretty good BCS, but a really bad wcs and acs. This will be a 2/2 vanilla on turn 3, or when in topdeck mode every time.
As a fan of Vinelasher Kudzu, I think this card is pretty exciting. I will have to test it out to see if the extra colored mana is simply to prohibitive. The best parts of Kudzu is using a dork to get it out turn 2 and immediately drop a fetch and crack it. Being at CMC 3 and doubled colored means you might have to spend your fetches to actually be able to cast it. Maybe the phantom ability can make up for the harder casting cost, I'll try it out and see.

I think it's somewhere between Vinelasher Kudzu and Phantom Centaure. But both of them are way better, and I don't run any of them. So I can easily say that it's a pass for my cube. And I think that all my green 3-drops are also more valuable than him.
