I honesty don't comment on anything outside of the modern threads but for this I had to make an exception. Now I'm not going to sugar coat this like some other users, but this is seriously what you need to hear. Also I am your age so this is not some outdated knowledge.
1) You will kill yourself within the next couple of years if you don't stop.
I have already had 3 kids I graduated with die from heroin overdoses. Most of them happened within a years of their first injection and were not fortunate enough to realize what had happened. You are aware you are addicted to alcohol and pharms...seriously stop being dumb and just get rid of it, it doesn't matter how it relieves the stress. You are not doing yourself any favors. Some people can handle illegal narcotics, or addictive substances, and can maintain a normal life.
2) Exercise
Some people have talked about finding a new hobby to invest, or increasing your interest in magic. While this is decent advice, the best advice would be to get into exercising a lot. The best way to start changing yourself is to do it physically. Also once you start working out you will be a lot less willing to put that f**king garbage in your body.
Not to mention the endorphin release will give you that natural "runner's high" which you may find more enjoyable than anything a external stimulant would give
3) Otherside
There is nothing I can say that this song does not say better. If you are to take anything away from this post let it be this song. Listen to it all the way through and learn to love it.
"We sell our dreams and our potential to escape through that buzz" - Macklemore Otherside
"If I can be an example of getting sober, I can be an example of starting over." - Macklemore Starting Over
"You keep all the issues and you take away the drugs, I had to find out who I really was. Who I really wasn't. So sick of who I was becoming. Tired of running, now time to look at the man in the mirror until I can learn to love him." Macklemore Make the Money
It sounds to me like a lot of these verses can be applied to how you feel. Your confidence has taken a few big hits, you feel lost, and these artificial substances fill the void that makes you feel whole, in place of anything truly genuine. I hit my rough patch too man, but you just have to decide your self-worth dust yourself off and move forward. I picked up tennis when I was 17 years old and used that as my means of self improvement. I went from a very sickly teenager to a D1 athlete, and it wasn't through magic either. All great things take effort and by numbing yourself to the challenges that await you (no matter how tough they are) you are robbing yourself of the beautiful things that life holds in store (they do exist! you just have to find them and you can't do that high or drunk)
Stellar logic. All decks that will ever be tier 1 or 2 have already been discovered. Might as well lock up the forum here and stop brewing everyone. Format solved.
I appreciate the concern. I forgot I even made this thread. I was at a pretty bad place a few months ago. Really bad. I've gotten a lot better, but I would be lying if I said I quit drinking. I've slowed down, and I no longer drink during the day/between shifts or in the morning before work, and I haven't had a Xanax since the hospital, but I still can't find a way to stop. I've quit smoking in the last two months, haven't touched a pill, I exercise regularly, I still drink every night. Not enough to black out anymore, but enough to be tired enough to where I make a conscious choice to go to sleep.
It's not much but it's progress and I'm trying.

As a drunk myself I can say that in my opinion, Iso's advice in the 2nd post of this thread is some of the best you are going to get. Life is hard mate, I get it. I'm divorced, homeless (again) and havnet seen my daughter in over 3 years. I want to drink away my pain every second of every day. But I know that in the long run it won't make things better. I tried it, for over a year. I got no where but further into a crappy situation. Eventually I hit rock bottom and finally realized what I was doing to myself. It took a lot of self control and self motivation to stop. I understand not everyone can do that. But there are groups out there for those of us that need them. They arent hard to find. Look for one, get a sponsor, and you can survive this. Youre young, you got a whole life ahead of you. All you need is to want it. And it does get better. It may take time but it does.

Don't short change yourself either man, progress is progress albeit slow or fast. That sounds certainly better than what I was reading about. To be honest I don't think its bad to have a few drinks to take the edge off. I have a few friends who need about 5-6 beers to really feel a little buzzed. But just don't go beyond that. Personally I don't drink at all, but I have my vices as well, and you have to realize that you are in control of your feelings and the substances should not be the things to decide for you. So as long as it remains something used to unwind from stress (what I do, and tbh still not that healthy) as opposed to a means of escapism I think you should be fine. Another idea would be to try to tone down your tolerance, your liver will thank you

If you would ask how to leave alcohol I would say: rebuild your social relationships.
It is very difficult because alcohol will wreck your daily life, but if you get sober eventually you will have to cope with daily troubles and specially with solitude. So probably now you can't think ahead without being anxious or without seing things from the today's perspective. That's something that happened to a friend of mine when she told me she wanted to suicide, one can't imagine not being depressed when you are. It leads to magical and circular logic than only feed addictions and fear to try so. So what I would do to solve your problem is:
- First go to whatever medical clinic o service you can reach and ask for help. There are drugs and treatments available besides the 12 step.
- Do something that involves interacting with other people, like sports, hobbies. Specially sports.
- Spend time with friends and family and seek their help and advice, but don't expect them to solve or fully understand your situation.
- Find a job or something that gives you a daily purpose.
- Finally think of the things that made choose alcohol, be skeptical about yourself and try to think a logical, possible, realistic, slow way of solving your problems.
I am Argentine, so sorry for any grammar mistakes. I hope you get better.
