Hi. Have you ever had to deal with a squatter? I have good reason to believe that someone is squatting in an old trailer on some of my land. The other day, I was going to do something or another up there, I think clear some of it off, and I saw someone moving around in the husk of a rotted old trailer. Being in the middle of nowhere, I didn't want to approach, risk frightening said person and potentially getting stabbed, shot, or what have you. A couple of days later, I returned to check it out, giving the squatter the benefit of the doubt - maybe he is just a homeless man passing through and needed a place to lay his head for the night. So I peeked in the trailer, found it empty and saw some leavings of his: an old sleeping bag, some dirty bottles and some animal carcasses, squirrels, I think. He must have returned while I was in the trailer, as I heard some noise outside and didn't notice any wildlife while I was making my way out. The next morning, I found a sticky note stuck on my porch's guard rail warning me against bothering his trailer.
I haven't had any threats made, directly, toward my person nor had my home vandalized. I do live out in the woods, though, a goodish ways from town. I asked for suggestions elsewhere, and all I got was "set fox snares around the trailer," which seems like a legal nightmare waiting to happen. So, have you had to deal with a squatter and if so, how did you deal with them?
Yeah you can't really do anything yourself I'd call the authorities. If he's on your land/property it is within your rights to call the authorities to kick him off your property. I definitely would not deal with the guy directly as that sounds like a terrible idea in terms of what might happen.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
1. Keep a copy of the note
2. When you report to police, tell them he threatened you to keep away from "his trailer" showing the note
3. Document everything that happened, any damage and ect. you've seen
4. Keep far away from him as possible
Considering he threatened you, this is a whole new game. I would highly recommend when the person is removed to have the trailer removed asap to discourage further incursions as he may return to "his trailer." No trailer, no squatters.
Keep your doors locked and if you have wife or children, keep them close or send them to a safer place. You need rid of this guy asap, the authorities can get him the right help. This guy isn't Oliver Twist, while he may not be a "bad guy" himself, the risk to "reason" with people is moot. There's a difference between a begger asking for food at your door, and a squatter trying to conquer your rotten trailer.

Life is a beautiful engineer, yet a brutal scientist.
Call the police and/or demolish the trailer. Both solutions get the guy off your land and destroying the trailer ensures no other squatters can setup shop easily on your property again. Also, put some signs up along your borders warning people that they are entering your property.

Why are you asking this on a freaking online forum instead of calling 911 immediately after you got that note?

I cannot believe the OP didn't think of calling the police. As in, I literally can not believe this.
So much of this makes no sense:

I haven't had any threats made,
You said you haven't had any threats made after describing a threat that was made.
There's also this:

"I have good reason to believe"? You say "I have good reason to believe" when the thing is still in question but you think you have a reasonable case for it. It's not in question whether or not someone's squatting on your property, you have physical evidence that someone's squatting on your property, you've witnessed someone squatting on your property, and you have a note confirming someone's squatting on your property.
***Put a hurting on them for threatening you and your family's well being*** then call the authorities to have this garbage removed from your property.
Warning for Malicious Advice. This is a potentially dangerous action and should not be acted upon.
So you've got yourself a squatter eh?
Well, take it from me. Heres some good down to earth advice.
From 2009-2011 I was homeless, and I hitchhiked around the united states, partially for pleasure, partially to find temp jobs and get paid under the table and what not. I never truly squatted anywhere that wasnt private property (unless if you count public/city property) but I have known others who had/have.
The easiest way to get rid of a squatter is to call the cops. But stop and consider why the squatter is there in the first place. As you have said, there is a chance the guy is just passing through and needs a place to sleep. I would wager this is the most likely reason. He will probably move on within a week or two, although that being said there is always the squatters who outstay their visit. Generally most squatters move on within a few days to a week or so, like oppossums and other critters.
That being said, you could leave a note, stating that you are aware of his presence, and asking him to take good care of the place while he is there, and also asking that he leaves within a week or two or you will be forced to notify the local authorities. Photocopy the letter you leave so you can show it to authorities, as if you do contact the police, the squatter can say he had permission, and it will be a good idea to have records.
You could also offer him the trailer if he can pay you a small amount, course you will need to get that in writing, and include that its a temporary arrangement, and that running water, heat, electricity, etc may or may not be provided, because every state has tenant/landlord laws, and you can really screw yourself over if you enter into this kind of arrangement. Provided you are sucessful at this, I wouldnt ask more than 20-25$ every 2 weeks.
As im sure you are aware, most homeless people as well as transients have limited amounts of money if any at all.
Now encountering the fellow, after you have left a note, try to see if you can get him to meet you in person in a safe place, such as an area that will give you the advantage, and him the courage to meet you without making him feel in danger. I would bring a gun but make it hidden, or leave it on display in a non-threatening manner. Have some coffee with him, have a small bonfire. Most squatters are not insane crazy people like modern society teaches, and anyone who does insist on that perspective is ignorant and not educated.
Try to get to know him a little, where hes from, where hes going, why hes there, how long he needs to be there. Be understanding and kind, and dont be rude as that can start an altercation.
If you really need to, maybe check in with your local sheriff's office, and let them know what is happening, so someone other than yourself is aware of his presence, preferably a person you can trust that wont ignore your feelings about the situation and will respect your wishes, not trying to overun your wishes and bringing down the hard side of the law just for ****s sake.

There's not a sob story in the world that's going to excuse someone who squats in somebody else's trailer, then claims it's his and threatens the original owner of it.

I don't think the OP is actually around, and I doubt the validity of this whole story, but no way should the OP engage this man directly. Let the authorities handle this.
I wasn't aware he claimed it is his and so what? Let him think it's his for awhile and let him do his thing. Sooner or later hell move on. I highly doubt he traveled there for the pure sake of indefinitely claiming the trailer as his own. And if it becomes a problem the op can call the authorities.
