so, a few days ago I was out walking around and applying for jobs. I walk into a Subway, resume in hand, ready to talk employment, when the following happened:
I walk in and see... I don't know how else to describe him except as a gangbanger. black skin, uniform colored clothes, chains, tattoos, the lot. well, he's abusing the cashier who is *trying* to ring him out, but he keeps changing the order, waiting for her to screw it up so he can get it for free, or something like that. (I really don't know.) so, after hearing him call her a "*censored* *censored*" for about the third time in about 15 seconds, I ask if I can talk to the cashier while he makes up his mind about what he wants on his sandwich.
big mistake on my part, apparently, because the guy turns to me and lets loose with a string of swears that would make a sailor blush. apparently, I personally had been oppressing him since childhood, and now I just wanted to rub it in by asserting my "white privilege" and force him to "stand in line like a *censored* slave". I let him go like this for about 5 minutes, and when he finally stopped, I asked "are you done? because I would like to talk to this young lady about a job."
and then it was my fault that he couldn't get a job, because apparently he wants to work at Subway so badly... after he started threatening me with bodily harm, I ask the cashier if she would be willing to make a statement to the police for harassment and whatever else I could think of that he could (potentially) get stuck with. after she says yes, I pull out my phone and start to dial...
he was out of the store before I could press the first 1.
while the cashier (and manager) were thankful (because apparently the guy came around often enough), the appreciation unfortunately only extended to a meal, as they were not hiring at that time.
I left them with some resources on the rights of an employee and a business, ate my sandwich (really good, btw. flatbread BLTs are awesome.), and continued on my way.
I just hope that they don't get into any trouble because of what I did...
so, my question is: how would you have handled the situation? I'm constantly second-guessing myself, and I want to know if there was another tactic I could have used here.
note: I censored his swears, but I'm not 100% on the rules for that sort of thing, because I never swear myself if I can help it.
I think you handled it very well. You didnt get angry and shout back to feed the fire. You stayed calm and collected. That is how it should have been handled. A lot of people would have either did nothing or fueled the fire. I highly doubt he will do anything to them after that, outside of the same thing of changing his order.
I think you handled that extremely well, if I had been in the situation the police probably would've been called on me because I tend to lose my cool in situations like that. Don't ever be afraid to stand up for yourself or others, integrity is becoming extinct it seems.
He sounds like an Xbox Live friend I used to have, before he went to jail (I knew him in Real Life, too, but tried to avoid him). There is nothing you can do or say to change their minds, they've but all their life's problems onto a concept or group of people and they can't be dissuaded. I think you handled it fairly well, but I would just recommend in the future to try avoid making yourself a target for a rage-aholic

III: irony.
there are two kinds of people in the world: those who can make reasonable conclusions based on conjecture.
You were right to call 911 because you were protecting yourself (the store won't do that - besides asking the person to leave).
